Another angle. I seat the first rivet snugly and place the head of the rivet on the anvil and hammer from the back side. Tap lightly and look the first time. You want to make sure the pieces are still at the right angle, and that they don't separate. Also see that your dent on the rivet head is level with the safety body. Tilt to correct. Then 3-4 deliberate strikes will finish the rivet.

Remove vice-grips, drill hole #2 and repeat.
