  1. Cops have the unfortunate job of enforcing the oppressive laws enacted by people we (the populace) vote for, and will lose their jobs if they do not. ...

So you are saying that cops must perform certain duties even if they think they are wrong or immoral, just to keep their jobs?

And what is the "we " stuff? "we " have enough laws already. I've never voted for anyone who has ran on a platform that included anything other than downsizing government and doing away with often useless or overreaching laws and regulations.

    BTW...

    to stay on topic.

If I am scared enough or mad enough to pull a gun IT WILL BE FIRED. There will be no, just to show to diffuse a situation. If it comes out it goes boom. Which is probably why I don't carry. Never saw a need to show my ace in the hole till I needed it.

  2. Gun-Kote isnt a bad finish. I prefer DuraCoat and use it on all my customer guns (Saigas and others).

Like I said in my original post... I'm leaning towards the Gun-kote since it's seems the simplest to apply with aerosol.

Figure I'll hold off on Duracoating for now.

Unless some one says one or the other is better for the aluminum.

I've got a oven in the shop to use to preheat and bake on the gun-kote. So essentially All I'll need to buy is the coating if i go the GK route.

  3. I'm gonna attempt to refinish my mossy 12 ga. This is more of a project where I plan on honing my skills. So if it doesn't come off as a professional look I'll be OK with it. Quite frankly unless I get extremely lucky I doubt it will. never been to good at the whole "painting" thing on anything.

    Anyways....

What would be best to use?

I'm kinda leaning towards the Gun-Kote from Brownells. It comes in an aerosol can so no need for an airbrush like the duracoat. I can source an airbrush if I have to go the duracoat route though. I've just never used an airbrush or even spray gun before.

I'm wanting to do the receiver, barrel, magazine tube and slide. All parts are steel except the receiver which is aluminum.

Will I have problems with the aluminum with either of these two?

Anybody have any experience with either one?

  4. I really don't care what you guys decide to do but.....

As long as this site has vendor specific forums and paid vendors you will have this problem.

From my own personal experience in running my own business I've been on all sides of the issue. Sometimes the customer has unreasonable expectations, sometimes the vendor promises something that can't be delivered or be delivered on time, Sometimes the customer is one that will never be happy no matter what and sometimes the vendor di actually screw up.

    Anyways....

I'm not trying to say anything about whether it's good or bad to vendors associated with the site. Cause basically you are gonna have problems even if they aren't here with this many members here. They'll just be different kinds of problems.

You guys gotta do what you gotta do to keep yourselves happy and the site owner.

And no matter what you are still gonna have problems between older members and newer members. Sometimes the newer guys will in fact not show any kind of common courtesy and other times it will just be some of the older who don't like anybody newer staking a claim on what they consider their turf.

it's a fine line to walk.

  5. I recently got a really good deal on a little Mossy 500 12 ga. 18.5" barrel and pistol grip.

I know this will sound like heresy on this site but I've never really been into semi auto shotguns. So I figured I would turn this little pump gun into my home defense weapon.

The gun has some wear on the reciever and only has the pistol grip.

    Question 1

Will duracoat work on the receiver?

    Q#2

Where is the best place to look for a good stock with a pistol grip?

The gun was really cheap and more than anything I just wanna play around with it by refinishing it and adding a few things to it.

  6. After being called by a customer and having to go into the shop and work most of the day I finally got a chance to walk over to the neighbor's this evening.

Talk about a dick. Dude got all defensive as soon as his wife called him to the door. I told her who i was and why I was there. Course I know she recognized me. Even though we have never met they have seen me out in the yard.

Anyways... He just said how unsafe it was and how the noise bothered him. I tried to tell him it ain't like I'm back there shooting every weekend or anything. Even told him I don't wanna be an ass, so it ain't like if I see he has lots of company over I'll just wait till another time to do my shooting etc etc etc....

After about 10 minutes of trying totalk to him I just gave up. Told him I was will within the law to shoot there and while I would try to be considerate I would under no circumstance stop shooting on my property.

The wife was trying to be nice and at least to me seemed ashamed by the way he was acting.

Oh well... at least I tried.

  7. Damn... even more replies. ... Again I must say thanks guys...

I had to work all day today and since I got home around 6 he hasn't been home. I figure I'll try and talk to him tomorrow if possible. At least find out what kind of person I am dealing with.

But let me say again... it ain't like I am operating a shooting range out back or anything. I or a few friends may shoot 3 or 4 times a year back there. most of the time it is just checking our scopes on the hunting rifles before the deer or pig season starts.

the neighbors have lived there for about 2 months and I have been here for about 12 years. All my other neighbors are OK with it and even shoot in the respective back yards every now and again. Besides where we shoot is at least 200-250 yards from his house or more seperated by trees and such.

    rangerdavid,

yeah I'm in NC. I'll try and get a more distinct answer but so far as I know I'm legal unless my bullets leave my property and the noise is over with by 6 PM.

    jeff

  8. thanks for the replies guys.

maybe it's just me, but I'm just sick of it. not just the shooting thing but other things too. I'm always the one that is supposed to be civil and talk it out all the while most of the time I never get the same respect.

I know it would be best to try and talk to him first. But as far as I know from talking to a few deputies and a former sheriff I am legal.

Considering that the pecker head didn't even have the decency to at least talk to me about it first. I just feel like letting ti rip fro a few weekends in a row just to piss him off. I mean it ain't like I'm not open to reason or anything. If the dude has problems with the noise or something I'd try and work with him while still retaining my rights. You know a little give and take from both sides.

I'm just pissed about how he handled right now.

  9. Had few friends over this evening and did some shooting out back from the house. Granted I don't live on a farm, but I live out in the country and have enough property and the lay out is perfect to keep bullets well confined to my property with no neighbors on the back side ro anything....

    Anyways.....

Like I said a few buds and I were out back blowing the shit out of old comp monitors and various other targets and sighting in a few new scopes and and red dots on shotguns. We had been at it for about 45 minutes with a shot every 2 mins or so.

We had about 20 guns laid out on the table ranging from pistols to shotguns to various homeland defense rifles.

Seems my new neighbors didn't like the shooting and called the cops. The next thing I know there are 3 deputies in my back yard wondering what the hell is going on. 2 of em were pretty cool about it while the 3rd was being a ginormous dick. he wanted to run serial numbers to make sure the guns aren't stolen. Wanted to tell me i was breaking the law by shooting in my backyard by having bullets leave my property. Which they weren't by the way I have a natural barrier down near the creek bank to stop them.

After about 5 mins of listening to his spiel I politely asked if he had warrant and if he didn't to please leave. the other two deputies just laughed when he stormed off.

So how should I deal with the neighbor? I figure I might shoot out back maybe 3 or 4 times a year. It's perfectly safe. I don't live in the city nor somewhere where it is prohibited. Should I go and try to talk to him and smooth it over or just go fro it and totally piss him off by shooting every weekend?

  10. I really don't care if those sort of avatars are allowed or not. it's not my forum so I have to abide by the rules the mods and Makc set. Which is fine with me.

I think most people got a little upset with the wording of the OP's post.

I have only been here a little while and even if I had been here years i wouldn't have dared try and tell people what they can and can't do according to what I thought was acceptable.

I still have to laugh when people bring up the "viewing at work" excuse though.

  11. The scary part is I could get that ENTIRE LIST sans the chickens from my dads house in about a half hour ( Thats to search through the piles to find a '74, June, issue of playboy... )

Id bet thats the size of tires he has on his full size van...

    The butter is easy...

The vaseline?!?!? I dont wanna know!

I *KNOW* for a fact he has LOTS of "holiday Inn" towels... some have a green stripe, some dont... some have the lettering in cursive, on others its standard text...

    :smoke:

Sounds to me like your dad is damn fine human being then.

As for the rest of ya'll on this thread, you gotta do a little better on the bidding. C'mon... maybe each one of you could provide at least one thing on my list and then you all could be part owners of the gun. Then you could just take turns shipping it around to each other. :lolol:

  12. Hah!

FFL it to me for $85 and make a cool profit!

    I am serious,..

    -GG

OK since you, scoutjoe and sicktooth have started the bidding I'll list my minimum that I'll take for the gun and the bidding can start from there.

    I'll accept no less than

    2 good egg laying hens

    40 feet of barbed wire

3 shampoo bottles in the handy travel sizes

4 slightly used P235 LT tires

    2 Holiday Inn towels

    Saran Wrap

    A jar of vasoline

    Two pounds of butter

and the June 1974 issue of Playboy. :haha:

  13. mossberg 12 gauges don't run down on value much, he can sell it for about 100-150 bucks easy if its in good shape. $50 bucks sounds like its been used in a crime ;)

Ummmm.... it's only a crime if you get caught isn't it???

Seriously though.... Just got home with it. Thanks for the replies guys. I've got 2 mossy 20 ga pumps that were gifts when I was a kid. those and the double barrel 20 ga I have are the only shotguns I have so I didn't know if it was a good deal or not.

The gun isn't perfect but it cycles pretty smooth and seems to fire rather well. It's got some noticable signs of wear where it ejects and where you load it on the bottom. But i don't think I got hurt for $50. Worst comes to worst I turn it into a project and try refinishing or duracoating it.

  14. About the miles: 25K/year???? Lemme guess, you live where it's nice all year round :D . The ad (eventhough it is most likely fake) was for NY, so he could only ride it X amount of months each year, with out NY winters and all.

I live in NC. You can get about 9 months of comfortable riding a year. Combine that with my being a poor SOB most of my life and only having a bike for me and car or truck for my wife and you get a lot of miles on a bike. Plus I just like to ride. :super:

If you are looking at modern used sport bikes 13k is nothing. R6s had some issues with 2nd gear in the beginning but I think those were cleared up on later models.

One other thing to look at when looking at modern sport bikes with 10-20k on the clock. Inspect the chain and sprockets. Chances are they will need replaced if they already haven't been. Not a biggy really but it can run you anywhere from $200-$350 depending on the brand and quality you replace them with.

  15. I found this bike on Craigslist, and wanna know if it looks like an OK deal (obviously I will check it out in person too). It's local to me, and the price is in my ballpark. But it has almost 13K miles on it. I have no idea how many miles bikes are good for on average  . Anyway, check it out, and let me know what you think fellas.

The ad you linked to is dead or has been pulled.

But to answer your question about miles on a motorcycle.

13K is nothing if the bike was halfway taken care of. I average about 25k a year on my bike. I've put well over 100k on three different bikes. Anybody who says 13k is a lot on a 2 year old bike just uses them to bar hop or has some sort of nonfunctional custom eyesore.

Hell My old 94 Yamaha FZR 600 is sitting in my mom and dad's basement with 170k miles on it. I wouldn't hesitate to ride cross country.

  16. Funny, my Saiga's been sitting next to my bed for over a year and it still hasn't shot me in my sleep.

    Sleeping soundly at night,

    Acer

Don't be so confident there Acer.

Why just the other night I woke up at about 2 AM and noticed my x39 had managed to slip out of the gun safe. Luckily I woke up and was able to subdue it before it got to the closet where my mags are stored. It was a struggle but I was finally able to overpower the thing and get it locked back up. Lord knows what it would have done to me and my wife if I hadn't woke up and it had managed to get a hold of a fully loaded mag.

I haven't been able to sleep since then.
