  1. You can get a collapsible stock, pistol grip, use 30 rds mags and be 922r compliant, without any gunsmithing too. The modified Tapco stock/pistol grip combo from saigastock.com is about $100 and seems to work pretty well. As long as you only use US-made mags, such as Surefire, you will be 922r compliant. The stock is one part and each mag counts as 3 parts, replacing 4 Russian parts and leaving 10, giving full compliancy. The only tool needed for the install is a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. My dimpled Saiga, with a POSP 4x24 scope, modified Tapco stock/pistol grip combo from SaigaStock.com, self-vented handguard, Phantom flash hider and a couple of 10 rds Surefire mags.
  3. The 5.45 mm seems to have performed quite well for the Soviets in Afghanistan. In fact, it was so effective, that the Mujahadeen had nicknamed it the "poison bullet" and complained to various human rights organizations about it. It had a tendency to hit one part of the body and come out somewhere else entirely, causing a whole lot of damage in between. It did prove to be less well suited for the more urban style of combat in Chechnya though. The 7.62x39 mm proved superior at punching through various cover.
  4. Looks sweet. I would like to order one. I have a question though: Is it legal to have a muzzle break or a flash hider on an unconverted sportster Saiga or does it violate the 922r regs? Thanks.
  5. The first two pics looks like they have been done by a forum guy named Devin. They do look kick-ass. I believe that he does the cutting and installs the rail for $57. I'll probably use his services. I vented mine with a dremmel, but I'm a clutz and it looks pretty shitty. I'm going to get another handguard on eBay and send it to Devin this time.
  6. They show up on eBay quite often and end up selling for around $20. I butchered mine while venting it with a dremmel, so I'm looking to pick up another one as well. This time, I'm going to pay some one to do it right.
  7. I use the Surefire Saiga 7.62x39 10 round Polymer magazines that I got from www.mississippiautoarms.com They are US-made and I prefer them to the factory mags, because they have the bolt hold open feature on last round. I think that that's an important feature. These guys have crazy fast shipping too.
  8. What's wrong with the original trigger, any way? My two friends and I were actually impressed with the trigger on my 7.62x39. We think that it's rather smooth. I installed the skeleton stock and vented my hand-guard, but I am not really interested in a conversion. I didn't want an "AK" when I got this rifle. I like the "SVD" look that I have going right now and I find it to be pretty ergonomic. Plus, it's going to be used as a cheap, intermediate range deer rifle this Fall. I would feel a little ridiculous going hunting with something that looks like a military assault rifle. I know t
  9. The retainer on mine came off the first time I took it shooting. I had tightened the bolt/swivel thingy really well too. Needless to say, I was not impressed. I just ended up making some holes in the stock hand-guard, to ventilate the barrel a bit better.
  10. My "dimpled beauty" came used with a 30 round mag. The store had it hanging on the wall with the mag in like that, for all to see. A lot of dealers seem to be clueless about the 922r regs.
  11. Heh. Good thing I asked, as I almost ordered it. The 7.62x39 sight does kind of screw in and out and this had me confused. Thanks.
  12. Sorry if this is a dumb newb qestion, but will this replace the standard 7.62x39 Saiga FSB sight notch, which definitely lacks contrast? --> http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/index.p...products_id=175 Or is this designed for Saiga shotguns? The product description is zero help. I just slightly cosmeticaly manged my FSB notch by trying to unscrew it with a pair of pliers, before I figured out that the cleaning tube contained the proper tool. I stripped some of the black paint off it. If the answer is a resounding "NO", is there anything I can do to make the sights more "contras
  13. That works even better with a pump-action 12 gauge. That distinct sound and the prospect of being on the receiving end of some buck-shot, really makes those home invaders re-think their decision. I don't keep my weapons chambered either, but it is primarily because I'm a little paranoid about accidental discharges.
  14. Wow, that's rather grotesue and uncomfortable to look at. It could've been me last weekend though. I cleaned the gas tube and made the same mistake as you while securing it. Fortunately, I just got a small piece of skin on the side of my thumb caught, without breaking it. There's just small, dark spot of coagulated blood under the skin now.
  15. The Tapco Saiga-specific Galil hand-guard wouldn't stay put for me either. So, I decided to use the original HG, after putting some venting holes in it. It keeps the barrel cool and I like the way it looks. BTW, first post here. Thanks for all the useful info, guys. The obligatory pics of my "Black Russian" are attached.
