  1. Thanks for the info. I had the 10 round magazine apart on Saturday to file it down to clear a bullet guide. When I was putting the 10 round magazine back together, I was surprised that the sping was the same length as the spring for the 30 round magazines that I was painting. I was careful not to mix up the springs but I guess it didn't really matter which spring I used. The spring really gets crammed into the 10 round magazine.
  2. Pro-Mag is on my 'No Buy List' along with Sig, but after reading the positive reviews about the 12 round drums, I'm weaking. My Pro-Mag 10/22 drum was junk and the extented mags for the Hi-Point's carbine did not get good reviews, just to mention a few Pro-Mag not the 'best' products.
  3. Paid $390 on May the 1st at a local gunshow for a 5.45. I only saw one dealer with 5.45 Saiga's. Most dealers, I spoke to, have not heard of a 5.45 Saiga and say that they only have the 7.62. I got some painted mags from Cope's with a pouch for $10 per mag. The mags work good. I removed the paint and then re-painted the mags, now they look a lot nicer.
  4. The krink brake works good - I guess. I had shot very few rounds before putting it on. One person at the range asked me if it a .308 because he said it is loud. I'm shooting the battlepack 5.45 rounds.
  5. I'm not sure what you mean by the foregrip? I like the Surefire forearm better then the Tapco and it is cheaper than the DPH arms (although it is metal). I use a CAA short grip on the Surefire forearm (not pictured). The MD Arms grip has a nice strong feel rather than the feel of the slim AK style grip. Last night, I shot 100 rounds at the range. No problems with the rifle. The scope retained zero even though it was removed to put the Saiga in a case. The AK74 mags worked good with no feeding issues.
  6. My 5.45 conversion has the following parts; AK74 Muzzle device AK74 FSB from Apex Surefire Forearm Tapco trigger - single hook Tapco Retaining Plate MD Arms pistol grip Ace Stock block - removed tang (no going back) Ace Buttstock Kalinka Scope Mount Warne Scope Rings Bushnell 10X Scope Dinzagarms Bullet guide Mako Bipod mount Duracoat OD Green paint The rifle went together pretty quickly. Mistakes - 1. Cut Ace stock block to clear the handgrip nut - should have put the block rails under the nut. I had to add some screws to secure the Ace stock block. 2. Before removi
  7. Thanks for the replies. I took apart the magazine and put it back together without the spring. The magazine would now hold 10 rounds without the spring. I found that the spring was not completely on the baseplate - the spring wraps around the baseplate in a couple of slots. This was preventing the follower to go completely down into the magazine to allow the 10th round. I put the spring back onto the baseplate and assembled the magazine. I can now load the magazine with 10 rounds.
  8. The magazine that was included with my Saiga 5.45x39 only hold 9 rounds. I cannot get the 10th round in the magazine. Did anyone else run into this problem (if it is a problem)? Should I try to trim the follower as it may be hitting the bottom of the magazine? I'm guessing that most 5.45 shooters are using the readily available 30 round magazines and not the factory magazine.
  9. The angle grinder worked for me. It took a few minutes of grinding to grind down the top edge of the can. The can did not get hot at all. The sparks were flying with a thousand rounds of ammo very close by.
  10. I wonder if the new Promag drum will work better than the Promag drum I bought for my Ruger 10/22. The 10/22 drum never did work,I could not load it. The drum went back to Promag. Eight months later (I had given up ever seeing it again), I got the drum back from Promag. The 10/22 drum still did not work - what a peice of junk. The 10/22 drum just sits on the shelf collecting dust. Promag is on my 'no buy' list.
  11. +2 on duplicolor low gloss black ceramic engine paint. I'm amazed at how smooth the paint goes on. I warm up the spray can in some warm water (not hot) before spraying.
  12. Thanks for the post and pictures. Tuesday evening, I was doing a conversion on my Saiga-12 and could not figure out how to install the safety lever with the BHO blocking the safety lever hole. I'm using the Tapco retaining plate, so the last part to go in is the safety lever or at least it was when I did my .223 Saiga conversion. I compared the BHOs' from the Saiga-12 and the Saiga .223 and they are completely different. So I'll just modify the BHO and I should be good to go. I guess you could leave the BHO out but at the range I go to they want you to always have the bolt open (unless
