bullet guide FINALLY installed!
mikebaker1129 replied to devilfish13's topic in Vepr Rifle Conversions
Thanks for the intel ! -
Seems like alot of taps are breaking on these ! Did you have any issues with taps on your other bullet guides ? What size Tap were you using ? I plan on using a Dinzag tap.

bullet guide FINALLY installed!

Hmm. I have tapped a couple of Saigas with out any issues. I have a New Vepr .223 and this has me concerned. I guess I need to look for a 3 fluted tap. I have the Dinzag taps and drill bits. Which size tap broke on you ? -
I bought this one used from someone on this forum. It was around $100 -125 .

As promised here is a pic of my new Vepr. She is all dressed up in a new suit of RA clothes, the wood was removed. I am not a fan of thumbhole stocks but the one I removed fit like a glove and was very comfortable. The Beryl mag is just stock in there for show, the rifle has no bullet guide installed, and no work done to the mag catch yet. I am pretty certain I will go with a Arsenal FCG or a Texas AK trigger. Just an FYI the US made floorplates will fit the Beryl mags if you file down the floorplate retainer. I will get a muzzle device later on after I decide .

Congrats! Mine came in today ,I will post some pics tomorrow.

Very nice ! I have never been a fan of thumbhole stocks, but mine feels really comfortable. I touched my wood just before I pulled it off.
-
The wood is gone ! I have a spare set of the Rob arm furniture I will install tomorrow, pick up a round trunnion bullet guide and FCG and remove the muzzle thread cover and shave down the rear mag catch down to 1.4015".

I just picked mine up a few minutes ago. I have to strip her down and get her ready for conversion.
-
I am wondering what size screw is it that holds the handguard on ? I know the pitch is .5mm, but the threading must be odd . I pulled out my metric tap and die set and there is nothing remotely close to it . Anyone know what the thread pattern on this is ?

Bonesteel sells a stock that fits the vepr and another that uses your AR stocks. Drop in fit no fitting required .

Bonesteel arms sells a great US made piston, they cost a bit more, but they are worth it !

Need some help - various magazine dimensions needed

The Polish Beryl mags fit as do the Bulgy circle 10's in my Vepr. Bulgys were tight the first few insertions , but they got better over time. Mine is one of the older RA conversions and the AK74 mags fit and function well. Mine was built using the AK74 mag pattern and East German bakelite mags snapped in with no resistence at all. My rifle came from the factory with a German 5.45 mag converted to .223 by RA and it has been flawless, no matter what the many naysayers continue to say about these not feeding all 30 rds. They do work! I purchased a few of the follwers and modified a few of my own -
floorplate, follower, piston and 1 other part, your choice, a handguard would be easy.

Cool, thanks!

AK Mags and Mag Catch Before Bullet Guide?
mikebaker1129 replied to Skiluvr03's topic in Saiga Rifle Conversions
Not the OP either, but I drilled the mag cach pin slightly, punched it out removed the catch fit it with a file and a stone lightly, used a slve roll pin in the catch to test with until the mags snapped in. Then I reassembled everything ,including the drilled mag catch pin and used a c clamp and a small round steel BB that is used with sling shots to reflare the mag catch pin. If you make a mistake there are online vendors that sell the mag catches . -
Bust the tap out with a punch like has allready been suggested . Then go buy a new good quality tap .Go no more than 1/4 turn back off to break the chips, then 1/4 turn then back off and so on . Keeps lots of oil on the tap. This method works. You cannot back it off and on too many times. Taps are hard and brittle,it should shatter like a piece of glass with a blow placed in the proper spot, usually on the side.
