  1. Dinzag is very much in business, and a reliable source for parts. The owner has a day job, and it can take a couple of days for him to respond.

I use Dinzag parts, and tools. They're always top notch, and work as advertised.

Brian a dedicated enthusiast, a real professional, is one of the original vendors on the forum, and helped 'write the book' on Saiga upgrades and performance work.

    We're lucky to have him.

I could not agree more! I purchased my drill and tap kits as well as his bullet guides. I have drilled and tapped several Saigas and Veprs with his kits and never broken a tap,I have read many broken tap horror stories, but the kits were purchased from another vendor.

Great seller that sells quality goods !

  2. Gentlemen, I know this is an OLD topic but.... I had a BNIB Saiga 223 that I tried to convert and said conversion went horribly wrong. So, now I have everything but the barrel. So any leads/ideas for a Saiga 223/556/300 BLK barrel 22mm trunion? I have the FSB, GB and HG “washer” from AK100/103. All I need is a barrel.....

Hope you can help. I’ve been sucking wind for months.

  3. Tiger you are correct, this has to do with the Saiga front trunnions not made to spec.

The Saiga was made on purpose not to accept full capacity magazines.

The easiest solution is to remove a slight amount of material from the front of the magazine.

If you remove the top cover and look at the area of the front trunnion when you slowly rock the magazine in you will see the area that is hitting. File just enough so the mags lock in.

Sorry I meant to write vepr instead of Saiga ^

  4. I got 2 galil mags at a gunshow to see if they'd work in my Saiga 223 but they dont, the bolt wont strip them from the mag into battery. They sit too low it what it looks like. Wtf. I know this is a Vepr thread but I thoguht peopel were using galil mags in saigas. They don't sit too low in Veprs then?

I use Galil mags in my Saiga.

Orilites work the best, followed by the steel 12 rd. mags. The 35 and 50 rd mags vary in specs so they are hit or miss on whether they will function or not.

  5. Take that deal. Pay the shipping and think of it as a learning fee, and a lucky escape!

    Those marker lines are alarming.

Or if you are adventurous and don't mind risking writing the whole project off, take the risks and try ManCat's guesses.

Return it and cut your losses !
  6. I just got a Circle 10 mag. Fits perfect. As stated, only the mag catch on the rifle needs to be filed to allow the mag to lock in.

Compared to the Circle 10 mag, the M85 and Steel Galil mags are about 0.060" inches too fat along the sides where the feed lips are. It could be possible to use a belt sander or something to take off 0.030" on each side. It might be that the mags survive through this, but there might be other issues.

The front trunnion on the Vepr does not appear it would reach the top-front of the Steel Galil mag to help lock it in place. This may not be an issue with the M85 mag.

I used an air die grinder with sanding pads when I converted a Weiger mag,it was a lot of metal removed from only the front latch that locks in the front trunnion. This was only done to 1 or 2 mags and then I had the front of the mag well opened up to allow for unmodified Weiger mags, I believe he milled 1mm from each side if I remember correctly. He did it in 10 minutes while I waited and then I decided to have him thread my barrel, again I waited ,about 15 minutes, the work was done at Elk River Tool and Die when they were in Houston. M85 mags are very similar to the Weigers ,so this may be possible.
  7. I would pick up a Bulgarian bolt head and carrier (matching#'s) on one of the forums for $40-50 from a parts kit that someone is parting out and save a few bucks. I picked up one of the KVAR Saiga 5.45 bolts to have as a spare for my .223 Saiga and Vepr, paid about $150 bucks or so for it. then I found someone selling a new bolt, carrier matching #s Bulgy unit for $40 so I jumped on it, then compared the KVAR unit to the bulgy and the Saiga .223 bolt and the differences were small.

Enough on the forums have tried it with building the Bulgy AK74 5.45 kits using a .223 barrel ,so I purchased the bolt to have as a spare.

The Saiga .223 uses a spring loaded firing pin and the BULGARIAN 5.45 does not.

Side note member Cerephim has made spring loaded firing pins for Saigas and is working on making ?223 Saiga/ Vepr bolts.

  8. Liberty, sorry the Houston question was for tbryanh .

If I am correct Liberty, you and I have done some business together.

To do the magwell properly you need to have it milled out. Problem with Galil mags is the mag catch is not 100% true from mag to mag. Even with the magwell milled out not all Galil mags may run in it. There is no steel option that works without heavy modifications to either the mag or the rifle. Best mags for the Vepr 223 are bulgy waffles or beryl then you only need to file the mag catch and add a bullet guide. 5.45 mags will work 10 round tapcos run great. Any thing over ten rounds and you will have to modify the mag follower to get then to feed proeperly since the cases are different.

    ^ is good sound advise.

Weiger mags can be made to function with some work to the mags.

Are you the guy in Houston ?

Sorry Mike not in Texas. Wish I was that's were I'm from originally. I'm in Illinois near Peoria.

Ues you can grind or file down steel mags. I did a couple just to see. It's alot more work than it's worth. The mags survive but I'm not sure that they will hold up well over time. Once and a while you will weiger german mags but you pay a premium. Another option it you really want metal mags is to go the route of an AR15 mag adapter. You will need some maching skill to do it yourself.

  10. I recently modded 10 M85 mags for my saiga .223 and they have been 100% so far. Mine fit like a glove as well with similar mods as the OP.

I did some rapid fire with them just to test but i generally take my time when I shoot so they haven't really been "torture tested".

After the first mod the other 9 went really quickly with a dremel. For the price I paid I don't think there is a better mag option for the S223 as long as they continue to function and the prices stay low. Only negative is they are heavy as hell and don't like mag pouches, but overall I'm extremely happy with them.

I am glad I was able to help ! Great mags for the price .

Jim Digriz were you able to locate some ?

J&G does still list the 10 rd mags pretty cheap at $3.99 ea
