  1. I never thought I would say it. But the Saiga is one rifle it pays not to reload for. It does not like soft pocket brass. It hates commercial primers. Finding correct bullets can be time wasting. It will quickly destroy your expensive brass. And changing springs for pins and extractors and such robs the Saiga of it's wonderful use of cheap ammo that gets the job done. Sometimes you just have to recognize a rose for what it is. And enjoy the thorns it comes with. Or what I really mean to say is....Please,please, pleaseCabela's; keep the Herters Softpoints coming.
  2. I am getting between 45 and 50mm groups at 125 meters with 154 grain Herters rounds. I use a stock Saiga with 20" barrel and a 1.5-4 x 32 scope on a UTG side mount. Due to the side mount and the looseness designed in the cover, you probably will never do much better. That kind of accuracy is just fine for deer and hog. Which is what I use it for. At one point a year or so ago, I had groups open up to 70-80mm's. I was using hand loads from a guy. He was supposed to be using .312 150 grain speer Hotcors. He used .308 150 grain bullets that had been pulled, and mic'ed out to .306 instead of .308.
  3. ......Good Luck with your new Izhmash toy. Hopefully it brings you plenty of tasty critters.....
  4. ...When I first got my Saiga, the first addition was a hi rise side mount scope rail with a small adjustable Tasco. In practice, it was not much of improvement to the groups. But I often find myself detaching the mount and glassing the brush for deer and hogs with it. The open factory sights are fine to take the shot with. I have to admit, after using a Marlin with peeps sights for decades, I'd be more interested in going that route. And continue using the side mount as a cheap and easy to carry spotting device....
  5. ...That conversion linked to looked great. But what are the chances of a more plain jane conversion with a longer 20" barrel and hunting legal five round maggies too?....I'm a poor sucka, that Saiga will have to put some vittles on the table to justify converting it....
  6. ....Only if you like a round that will penetrate both sides of a car body and still strike the bad guy at 600 meters...Don't try that at home with your 5.56....You'll just piss off the bad guy....
  7. ....Why do you think it would not fit? It's an offshoot of the 22 and 6mm PPC, which are based on the 7.62 x 39. Overall case length is set at 39mm.....It should interchange.....As far as accuracy, you might be limited on the rifle to a degree. But with a new barrel and chamber, I'm thinking your making a gain. And 6.5 bullets are the bees knees on versatility. From hot little 85 grain pills, to 160 grain Moose thumpers. Not to mention the hot sexy VLD's capable of a takedown at 1000m......
  8. .....Sweet! I like the look of the pistol grip. How steady is the top rail set up like that?....
  9. .....Nothing till you pull the trigger, and give away your firing position. Then you'll be sniper bait......
  10. .....The main benefit is about an extra 80-100fps on the speed of your spitball compared to a runt barrel. That does not matter to much on the 7.62X39, but it helps. What is insane is a 16" .308, that just retarded. Nothing more then a blaze-amatic.....
  11. ......Oh! $13.6K for camo and on demand driven sidewheel, Scotty beam me up!:
  12. ......Apparently for $13K, you too can own an authentic new Uralcycle with sidecar. Go here: http://www.imz-ural.com/default.htm ....Cool, I want a "Red October" model....
  13. .....Did we not just see yet another instance of .223 folly when some poor soldiers in an Afghanistan firefight watched their ineffective fire render their rifles junk from too much firing?.....It's a fine varmint round, little else.....7.62 x 39 carries superior terminal ballistics throughout it's effective range....
  14. .......I'm disabled, but you often can not tell it. If I pull up my pants legs, you can tell real fast. I have my better days, and try to get out and do routine stuff around the yard, house or shopping. Some days, are just a wash. They will not even accept me at the Vocational rehab, until I have a number of issues addressed. Which seems like it will take years to fix. Those years waiting for disability were pretty rough. I lost quite a bit of stuff, and more or less sold stuff until I finally got a hearing. But the point is, even though I was broke, there were plenty of avenues for help. Betw
  15. .......If this could be done, could it be done so one could use long VLD type bullets and hornady 160's so you'd have a versatile hunting gun?.....
