  1. Why punish the saiga by heating it up for no reason with sustained fire? I lube my saiga with moly and run one mag as fast as i can and still be accurate making each shot count. Just to see if i'm as good as the gun is. If there was room for a clamp on heat sink with fins that would cool the barrel like the 1927 thompson machine guns had it would cool the barrel on the saiga's more.
  2. I was on my way to purchase a new SA M1a at the time when i passed by a rack of the brand new russian izmash saiga's in 308win w/16" barrels marked $289. Of course i never made it to the m1a's. Since we were on the way to go hunting in the north country we took the saiga with us after we cleaned and lubed it. After the hunt was over we took it out and we and the northern boys shot it for the first tiime. I never owned an ak to this day because most of the ones i seen were left over from the rush/sales and were butchered reworks. What drove me even more towards the russian saiga is its a br
  3. For many years my uncles would brag about the brenneke rifles slugs for smooth bore shotguns. I find them to be very accurate too. I have also shot the sabbot slugs out of my smoothbores too. These are for rifled bores but the accuracy is still good enough to hunt with too.
  4. I think if the saiga in 308 with no scope is accurate why not put a good scope on it. I haven't shot the 22" barreled saiga in 308 yet with the south african 308 ball ammo. But once its certain its as accurate as my 16" barrels i will put a decent scope on it. This will be one of my new hunting rifles. I have a saiga in 223 scoped that i haven't shot yet too. I had to play with the side lever scope to finally get it to lock up the way it should but it is rock solid now. It takes a little time to get it right.
  5. The wolf ammo in 7,62x39 in the soft point 154gr hunting ammo shoots very accurately. I need to benchrest all my wolf ammo soon.
  6. I been eyeing the kalinka $399 scope for my 22" barreled saiga are they any good?
  7. I put the moly paste or anti seeze on all my trigger sears. It lessens the trigger pull up to 50% right away on some guns and smooths out the trigger actions too. I also lube the saiga's action with moly too and its a whole different feeling action. It feels like a more expensive gun once the moly wears into the pores of the metal. My guns never leave home without moly in them thats a fact.
  8. I have benchrested all my newly purchased 308 rifles using south african 308 FMJ ball ammo so i have a baseline for comparison. I purchased my new russian izmash saiga in 308win with the 16" barrel when they were just $389 / $307 OTD with taxes. Benchrested at 100yds she prints a 1 1/2" group with me or my son shooting it with iron sights no scope. Years ago on the net some shooters did say out of all the imported ammo the russian barnaul was the most accurate. I think any of the imported ammo should should at least shoot 2" to 4" groups thats 1 minute of man. 1. Spanish cetme with
  9. I think the red jacket sniper saiga was way over built. I do not think anyone has ever sat down and shot the 308 saiga with a 16'' barrel and a 22'' barrel to see where there limits really are with accuracy. Some guys in the past who own the vepr and the saiga in 308 the saiga is a tad more accurate over the vepr. Again put some moly on the trigger and benchrest it.
  10. I lube my saiga's with moly inside the receiver and on the trigger sear its a completely different feeling rifle after. It feels like a trigger job was done on it too besides cycling faster and smoother.
  11. Put some moly paste or anti seeze on the sear it will smooth out the trigger pull roughness ande lessen the trigger pull too. My saiga in 308 using south african surplus 308 fmj ball ammo will shoot 1 1/2'' groups at 100yds benchrested.
  12. I have a Russian SVT-40 Tokarev in 7,62x54r and never had a feeding problem in many years of shooting it. I wish we could get a saiga in 7,62x54r with a 16'' or even a 18'' barrel. But it would need to have an adjustable gas system so we could shoot the 203gr soft point bullets. I been wanting to get a saiga in 7,62x54r for a longtime too. But i may settle for a vepr in 7,62x54r. My question is how good are they?? Accurate??
  13. For hunting in bear country in heavy brush I use a 444 marlin with 270gr & 300gr SP bullets. Because any little twig or branch can send the 30cal bullet off its intended path. But i like the 7,62x39 with the 125gr SP bullets for smaller game and the 154gr SP bullets for deer. I prefer the sks over the saiga in 7,62x39 mainly because of its price and its a tad more accurate over the saiga. With the 308win round you have more range and its probably more accurate than the '39 too in the saiga. I bumped up from my trusty '06 back in '94 to a 338win mag and never looked back yet. But my n
  14. Years after buying them and having them out once to the range i deceided to lazer bore sight in my 3 saiga's in 223 that are shooting low at 100yds. With two of them adjusting the front sight horzontally and down they both adjusted right in. With the third one i found the front sight canted a tad. I need to pull the pins on the front sight and move it someday. Since i can't adjust it that far i planned on scoping one anyhoo so its scoped and lazer sighted in for now. My point is eye ball the front sight before you purchase the saiga to make sure its not canted. All 3 of my saiga's in 30
  15. I asked the saiga importer about a small parts kit for my saiga's but really got no answer. I lube my saiga's with moly and they show no signs of wear yet. But i purchased 2 saiga's in 308 and 2 more in 223, but i also purchased 2 extra saiga's in 308 & in 223 for parts guns if i need parts someday which i may or may not need them. But at the time the importer stopped and changed hands so i figured we might never see them imported again plus the price was so cheap on my last 2 saiga's i couldn't pass them up. Moly my guns never leave home without it.
  16. I really like the 16'' barreled 308 over the 22'' barrel. I own both but really haven't focused nor compared the two different barrel lengths yet. We been hammering my two 16'' barreled saiga's in 308 so far. Benchrested with surplus south african 308 ball ammo at 100yds the 16'' barrel will shoot 1 1/2'' groups if we do our part. I'm sure with a better quality ammo it will tighten up the groups even more. A few years back there was one shooter with a 16'' barreled saiga scoped was hitting steel plate gongs at 450yds. I'm not sure where the accuracy of the 16'' barrel will fall off and
  17. I looked at the saiga importers sight and found the 308 saiga is no longer listed they just list the saiga's in 7,62x39, in 223rem and in 5,45x39 no 308's???
  18. After seeing how accurate my 16" barreled saiga in 308win is at 100yds with surplus ammo i figure the 21" barreled 308win saiga with a better quality ammo would go out to the farther distances. I find it odd no one has tried the 21" 308 saiga at the farther distances. All i have here is 100yd ranges. Everyone wants to rework the saiga before even trying it at the longer distances. I been wondering if my newly aquired m14 will shoot as good as my 308 saiga's? There's a shoot off comming soon. The $289 308 saiga against my $799 norinco m14. The norc's usually go for $1,200 + here.
  19. I loaded around 8k of 308win all brands of brass including LC trimmed them and ran them thru the RGB LEE 308win FL dies and there all good. The bullets are tight with no crimp. But i did lower the die for it to add a little crimp anyhoo. Will the loose bullets in your .311" case neck held in place by the crimp move when they load into the chamber?
  20. I went to the saiga importers sight and seen they have no 16" or 21" saiga's in 308win with the black colored plastic stocks listed anymore. They just show the 7,62x39 and the 30-06, no 308win is listed??? Discontinued??? UNKP
  21. Tony, Thanks after a closer look with my new eye glasses i seen the barrel is way to short to thread. Since my two 16" barreled saiga's in 308win are pretty equal in accuracy i may forget about adding a flash hider / muzzle brake. It was a good idea at the time. Maybe i can install the ak canted muzzle brake and the shorter flash hider on my sks's. After not seeing my saiga's for over a year i got to fondle a saiga in 308 w/16" barrel today. These are awesome rifles. UNKP
  22. First in a hunting situation we need a scope for an accurate shot in the low light, dusk. During the daylight I really don't need a scope except for a very long shot that i would only take if its a trophy of a lifetime animal. I mainly hunt for the thrill and looking for that one record breaker. I'm 60yo and a diabetic and with my 16" barreled saiga in 308win i'm shooting 1 1/2" groups with surplus ammo. I have a 21" barreled 308 also i'm thinking of also scoping it too. To mainly shoot paper and hunt with it. I like to get a kalinka russian scope but i'm also looking at a bushnell s
  23. Does anyone manufacture a muzzle brake adapter so i can install a 14mm-1.0 LH MB on the 308 saiga?? Do you trim the metal that wrapps around the barrel's front sight to show the barrel material then thread it?? There appears to be two different pieces of metal at the end of the barrel where the front sight is???
