  1. That's why I use mail order for my lube!!
  2. Unfortunately, this is what I suspected was in the making. Importers strategy may be shifting with the sunset law. Why import the Saiga as a sporting arm at rock bottom proces when you can import other more profitable lines under the curent law? We can kiss the hi-caps good bye. Watch the prices on the Saiga's. It's the law of supply and demand. Dunham's is asking full price right now. I doubt we will see them again for $179 to $199. Folks will be looking to scarf up what is left. As for the comment someone will pick up the line. Factories only produce what importers, distribu
  3. I'm there with you zipgun. I live in GR MI. Don't want to be walking around in the woods with a 30 rounder during small game season. The good ole DNR would surely write a ticket or arrest the carrier if they were bored that day. It's like all forms of enforcement. It's a numbers game. the trick is not being one of the statistics. Welcome to the Saiga board. Wolverine
  4. I agree that the probability of detection and/or prosecution is very low, but if you push the envelop or live in an area of zealous law enforcement, it is all you would ned to be on the short end of the stick. I can only imagine what would happen if you lived in New York and drew attention by bump firing with some friends for a couple of hours. When the local boys come to check out who is raising all the hell and half understands what you are doing and whether the "evil" gun is legal and therefore confiscates it, you could have a problem if some technical legal beagle determines you were
  5. Guys I have been surfing the gun sites. I don't have a .308.....yet, but I noticed this and thought this might help some of you searching for .308 magazines. http://www.ammoclip.com/Numbers/308m.htm I am on the hunt for 7.62 hi-caps but we all know the story on these. Wolverine
  6. An imported AK has a pistol grip and is in the count of 16 as listed above. Assuming it was imported with a muzzle device the count is 16 parts for the AK 47. A Saiga has neither the muzzle device nor a grip. You definitely want to use a US grip but adding one does not help on the count as you are only focused on 14 (excluding the handgrip) to begin with. Therefore, if you add the FCG and either a US stock or grip. You have the 4 + 1 (grip) necessary US parts. If you asdd the muzzle piece you can use either foreign or US. If you use US there is no part count concern. If you use fore
  7. pistonring8, Yes you can. The followers will work in the saiga magazine but the florplate is different. I I was suggesting installing the bullet guide and buying the less expensive AK 47 magazines and then installing US made floorplates and followers in these. No problem with that at all. As for finding them, here is one site that offers FSE product in a 10 pack for $10. That's a good brand and price considering I have seen floor plates and followers sell for $2.50 to $3.50 each. http://www.rpbusa.com/ak.html Hope this helps. Wolverine
  8. OK. you had me spinning for a couple of minutes. the original BATF list has 20 parts. Only 16 apply to the AK 47, and only 14 to the Saiga 7.62. That includes the magazine. AK 47 Parts List Per BATF Listing: AK Specific List This list is edited to be AK specific. (1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings (2) Barrels (3) Mounting blocks (trunions) (4) Muzzle attachments (5) Bolts (6) Bolt carriers (7) Gas pistons (8) Triggers (9) Hammers (10) Disconnectors (11) Buttstocks (12) Pistol grips (13) Forearm handguards (14) Magaz
  9. If I am understanding this post correctly Bvamp has just confirmed that every guy who has done the conversion and installed 4 or 5 US parts and then slams in a Saiga magazine out on the range is in violation of law (922r) and subject to criminal penalties. If this is accurate the only way to be legal is to install the bullet guide and use an AK magazine with a US made floorplate and follower, assuming 5 other US parts which might include the FCG, the gas piston, and a US buttstock or forearm. I think I may have just woke up. Say it ain't so. Bvamp, why do so many guys focus on the 4
  10. Think that is what I am going to do. Probably add US floorplates and followers too. I am not going to wait forever for EAA or Remington or who ever the heck is in charge to think asbout actually servicing those who bought their imported rifles.
  11. KySoldier is right. It is not monumental. I just wanted to givce you the heads up about the bho in case you wanted to keep the feature. I played with that one for awhile figuring it out. but then I am no mechanical genious so you should have no problem.
  12. BlenderWizard, Sorry I didn't answer in my last post above. First you need to study over the coversion post. then you need to buy supplies for the conversion. The actual conversion itself can take several hours, particularly if you try to save the manual bolt hold open feature. The G-2 Hammer base is wide than the Saiga and must be carefully honed on each side to allow enough room to re-insert the bho piece and spring. It's a bugger to get in. Once you get the pieces out of the gun you have to decide to paint the bottom or wait. Assuming you paint first, then attach the pistol grip,
  13. I will defer to those more knowlegeable than myself. It is certain that with the folder and grip 922r applies.
  14. brian33x51, No they are not as meaty as the SAW grip. They are a medium type of grip. I put one on my recently converted 7.62. I like it. Wolverine
  15. I have asked the gas piston question on the 7.62 without response. I compared a Tapco SS AK 47 gas piston to the Saiga and it appears the Tapco is about 1/4 to 3/8 inch longer. How crucial this is, is unclear to me. It may be harmless or..... I suspect the gas piston in the AK 74 may be a hair shorter just as the bottom handguard is smaller than a standard AK. I don't have an AK 74 piston to compare with. There is not a great deal on the topic or how to best pin the new gas piston after being replaced. It would be nice to have the advice of an experience smith from Krebbs or the
  16. MCUzi, Nice. You are quite a character. Thanks for the positive input on the 8 rounders. I can see you also have a sense of humor. Most important. isn't it great we are multi-dimensional? See ya on the boards. Wolverine
  17. Congratulations and thanks for picking up the extra work. So much for IT stuff being a hobby. Yer drifting back to the profession. I have not been a member of this board very long. For the most part I find it informative and constructive. When McUzi started abusing people things went South. As I indicated in the threads everyone is entitled to their opinion. The issue is how it is expressed. If folks communicate with persistant abusive language, comments and personal attacks they should be shut down. Other than that long live free speech and gun ownership!! Wolverine
  18. zipgun, You have modified the original approved sporting arm as imported. By modifying and adding some US parts you become subject to 922r. The Saiga in 7.62 has 14 critical parts off the list of 20 listed by BATF. 922r states you may not have more than 10 imported parts on a rifle. The grip does not count on the Saiga as there was not one on it when imported. You have changed the stock. That counts as 1 but you need 3 more to be legal. brian33x51 suggesed the hammer, disconnector and gas piston. He did not suggest the trigger because it is different in the Saiga. without the c
  19. Thanks for the info. I don't like what I see coming. Looks like the well is drying up and hi-caps are just a mirage. Oh piffle!!
  20. Lollygagger, That is some interesting window dressing you installed on your rifle. I take it the idea occurred well into the celebrating? Anyway, Happy New Year to you and the rest of gang on the post. Wolverine
  21. McUzi may be right but he needs to go to charm school to learn how to co-exist with others. Henry Kissenger he ain't. You can be right as rain but not lead, educate, help or persuade others if you alienate them by treating them like dirt. There isn't anything from a fact standpoint that he could not have shared in a more civilized fashion. It is obvious that his demeanor is intended to bring attention to himself apart from the question of the facts. I have no problem with differences of opinion and supporting an argument with demonstrable facts, but there is no need to abuse one another i
  22. Gents, You might want to consider the sure and handy thing. It is a part specifically designed to replace the factory retention wire in an AK and is infinitely easier to install and take out. Follow this link: http://www.tapco.com/product_list.asp?dept=40&last=40&page=2 Check the lower righthand corner of the page. It is called an AK Retaining Plate and sells for $11.99 The part slides into the hammer pin slot, lowers down into the trigger and disconnector pin, and is affixed by a third hole (far left) that the safety arm pin slides through. When the safety is pus
  23. glennb, Nice looking finished rifle. I have finished mine too although I am thinking of changing the furniture depending how it performs this weekend. I too installed the Tapco folder but used a combat grip and did some work on the stock forearm. I am left handed and the first thing I noticed with the folder is the hinge joint within a couple of inches of my cheek bone. If I slip or have a poor grip I can see that thing slamming into my cheek during rapid fire recoil. That alone is causing concern. then there is the reported bouncing when fired in a closed position. I am leani
