  1. Yeh, but what bites more is that the Saiga is a better quality rifle than the Cetme. Like my WASR-10 the importer (Century Arms) installs shit parts and does shit work. After you buy it (at a higher price than the Saiga) you have the privilege of investing in it to make it functional. On the otherhand, the Saiga is a fine shooter right out of the box. I think this the inporters are dancing with BATF and want to stay off their radar screens. The goal is to sell firearms not magazines. Let someone else take the heat for focking around with high capacity magazines, domestic or imported.
  2. Save the beer so we can have a national celebration when Bvamp triumphs over his recent experience with his local PD's finest.
  3. Bad news guys. I placed an order with EAA for two 30 rd. 7.62 magazines last night. This morning I received an email from EAA telling me they are on back order for 90 to 120 days. I don't like the sounds of this. You would think the Russian factory would produce and sell these like hotcakes given the growing sales of the Saiga rifle and the premium proie these unique magazines bring. Shit!!!! Wolverine

  5. jindoakuji, Welcome to the Saiga and this board. As the others have said I have learned a great deal here and have started the conversion. At my feet lies a freshly painted converted Saiga awaiting assembly. I thought I wouldf point you to the main two conversion sights as a shortcut: http://www.cross-conn.com/Saiga_Conversion/ http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=1688 The first option involves moving the trigger. The second involves drilling and tapping ACE parts. The Ace conversion is slick but getting to the right parts count to be legal is more challengi
  6. MidSSouth, Your part is OK and does not need to be cut. the clamp used to secure it does. follow this link and read the description by Mrapathy2000. PS...I plan on doing this on my Saiga using the tri-rail handgrip. It is much easier and cheaper than pressing off the front sight block and gas chamber. I have finished moving the trigger and am painting now. Almost time for the furniture. Good luck on yours. Hope this helps. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=2348 Wolverine
  7. MidSsouth, Here are a couple of other options from reputable dealers: The Galil from Tapco: http://www.tapco.com/product_list.asp?dept=40&last=40 The Tri-Rail from Blackjacks: http://www.blackjackbuffers.com/index.php?...products_id=209 Wolverine
  8. MidSSouth, I was referring tovyour front sight block assembly held on by pressed in pins. Yes, those handguards will work if you use one of the two methods I mentioned. I would be inclined to cut the retaining plate, open it enough to slip it around the barrel, affix it in place, and bolt it closed. It is not as pretty but most of us don't have access to a press without paying a gunsmith which defeats the purpose of doing it yourself and controlling costs. I note the handguards you referred to were imports. I would select a US part for part count reasons. You can select the Gal
  9. saul, Your question is fascinating and your logic is sound. I had the same question when I first bought my Saiga rifles and the 30 rd. magazines became available in 7.62. When I asked the question of how we could be using a 100% imported rifle and large capacity magazine one of the members answered stating possesion of the large capacity magazines is no longer an issue with the sunset of the old prohibiting law. I am not an attorney, law enforcement officer, or expert on the subject but I do have a speculative answer to your question. I believe it has to do with the fact that the US
  10. I am not a lawyer or expert on 922r but I strongly suspect that if you modify the approved Saiga as imported by adding a different buttstock you are subjecting yourself to the requirements of 922r. That said I looked up a past thread with photos of a Saiga with the Draganov stock you expressed interest in. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=1990 Wolverine
  11. MidSSouth, If I understand what has been posted by the more experienced members, you have two choices when attaching this or any other upper or lower forearm designed for the AK 47. Either press out the pins and remove the gas chamber and FSE to properly affiz a retainer plate or cut the plate slide it over the barrel, affix the part and bolt the retainer plate together so that it performs its' function of holding the forearm in place. The exception to this is to install the more expensive UltiMak top rail ($85 on Blackjack's site) that facilitates installation of sight systems and
  12. Greetings and welcome pistonring 8. Many of us are pretty new to the Saiga and this site but not firearms in general. It sounds as though you are going through all the same mental gymnastics that i and others have been through. To move the FCG or not. The Saiga is unique and functional. Who wants to mess up a perfectly well thought out and functioning trigger mechanism just to comply with some bullshit law or to copy everyone else. After all if you want a AK 47 look alike, buy one. On the otherhand the Russian Saiga's fit, finish, and quality far exceeds the now available Romanian WA
  13. I noticed the US made piston I got from Tapco is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer than the unit in my Saiga. Is this variation normal and will it work OK? Also, when you remove the old piston what do you use as a retainer in the new one? Do you tap and thread it? What pin or screw is used to assure the part remains seated? Thanks for the advice. Wolverine
  14. stokstad, I believe you are right about the flexibility of changing from one style of stock to another with nominal parts once you purchase the adaptor. There is some expense involved in getting to a folder with ACE parts. The receiver adaptor ($35), The hinge piece ($60), and the skeleton frome in one of three sizes ($65). That means I would have as much tied up in the folding stock as the rifle. I may do it but not before I find out if I like the feel of the folder using the Tapco. If not I will either install the ACE without the hinge or look at other options including putting the
  15. Thanks for your response. I looked seriously at the ACE option myself and decided on the full conversion due to the difficulty at arriving at the parts count. So far I have gutted the receiver and removed the trigger guard and plate. I need to sand and paint next. Then I can begin reinstallation of the FCG, grip, etc. I doubt that it will happen before Christmas as we are hosting the family with 22 guests. Needless to say its a zoo around the house right now. It gives me something to look forward to. I bought the Tapco folder but may shift to the ACE after trying it out. I can alwa
  16. Thanks for the info. guys. Yes, Krebs adverstises the forearm and buttstock pair for $35 versus the meer $110 that EAA wants. I am guessing that Krebs has stripped them from Saigas they have converted for customers. Wolverine
  17. Thanks guys. It'd worth putting the guide in if all you have to do is make one minor modification to magazines. I had a hunch the .223 caliber East German magazine fix was much more complicated than the average person would want to go through in light of the fact you can now buy 30 rd. 7.62 Saiga magazines. Wolverine
  18. Stokstad, How do you plan to reach the required parts count to comply with 922r? It looks like you have added a slick new ACE stock. What else did you add/change or do you plan to do to be legal? Wolverine
  19. This is not a new topic but I did not see an apparent on point discussion in any of the recent threads. If I install a bullet guide in my 7.62 Saiga as I work through the conversion what modifications will I have to make to a standard AK magazine (i.e. Bulgarian, Romanian, Polish, etc.) to get it to work reliably? Will I have to perform all the operations Sheik lists in his conversion site, or was that specific to .223 caliber and the German magazines? Your advice is appreciated. Many thanks. Wolverine
  20. Gentlemen: For those of you who have drilled the handguard to add elongated ventilation holes to aid in cooling the gas piston chamber and barrel, what diameter bit or hole was used? Also, has anyone created a site providing advice on this like the one on converting the trigger mechanism and adding a pistol grip? Thanks for the info. Wolverine

  22. brian33x51, That's not good news about either the FCG or the Tapco folding stock. I have yet to start the conversion so I am not sure what the problem is with the FCG. As for the Tapco, there is one sitting in my basement waiting for installation. However, I want to be able to shoot with the stock folded without it bouncing all over the place. I wish I would have know this before. I probably would have ordered an Ace folder. Wolverine
  23. I believe Bvamp posted a picture of his SAR with top rail and Gali? forearm on the Vented gas tube - Any Updates thread several down from this. The Gali sells for around $50. I don't think it will fit a Saiga without some creative engineering. I wonder about heat retention and cooling when using the Gali. Maybe Bvamp will see this and can give us the straight scoop. Wolverine
  24. For those interested Ultimak is now listing a bottom rail to complement the top vented rail like Bvamp has on his SAR. The asking price for the top rail is $85 to $90. The bottom rail is going for a cool $220. It is sharp but steep in price. You either have to be big into tactical or really love the look. I'm toying with the idea of trying to fit the combo on my Saiga as I work through the conversion. It is big $ considering the rifle cost $199.
