  1. I just toss mine in the trunk of my jeep in a rifle case. I keep the magazine free from the rifle inside the case, and 40 rounds of barnaul in the center console. I put a couple old coats/jackets over the case so it just looks like I have a bunch of old nasty work close back there. BTW, I have seriously considered taking my 30-30 with me for my work car. You are not alone. I don't work far from Baltimore city either...
  2. x2. I went with the x39 because I already own an SKS, so the ammo is the same, as well as my intended purpose. Just a fun range gun, plinker to destroy cans and what not on the farm, as well as a SHTF rifle. 7.62x39 is dirt cheap, works great for what I use it for, and the recoil is so mild you can shoot it all day long but still has some butt behind it that a .223 seems to be lacking. With that said, looking at recoil tables and shooting a few hundred rounds through my Saiga in 7.62, I am definitely going to try and pick up a .308 before the next ban hits (assuming we have one).
  3. First of all, thank you to all the military guys that posted in that thread. I went for 7.62. If I wanted a .223 I would have probably bought an AR15. A 7.62 will make decent groupings on a paper target. Decent enough to have fun with, or hit a torso if necessary. It is hard to argue a .308 bullet or a .22. With that said, if you already own a .223, just buy another 7.62 and trade the .223 for a .308 down the road The recoil on a 7.62 is negligable. I have a 30-30 that I can only shoot 5-6 rounds from a bench of 12 standing before I have a bruise on my shoulder. I put 400 r
  4. So now we are having kind of opposing ideas. Before I go back to the range next weekend and waste ammo trying to figure this out, which was is correct? Do we put the front of the cylinder on the line like A, or the middle of the cylinder on the line?
  5. In Maryland, CCW is illegal unless you carry lots of cash for business or you have 3+ death threats recorded by the State Police, so I have been looking at Less than lethal myself. Bullet Proof Vests are illegal in Baltimore, so that's out. Tasers are illegal in Baltimore, and DC too I believe, so that is out. I have been looking at Kimber's Guardian Angel as well as there other product, I believe it is called the JPX? The Guardian Angel is a $40 2 shot OC spray that runs about 13 ft and 90MPH, and just a smidge bigger than a pack of cigs. It also has a small safety and belt clip. T
  6. Wish I coulda gone Really wanted to go and shoot a .308, but things came up. Really wanted a shirt too. Oh well, glade you guys had fun.
  7. I need the same questions answered myself! I just took my new Saiga 7.62 to the range yesterday myself. Mine was also shooting on the bottom left of the paper at 25 yards, and I had to aim at the top right corner of the target paper to stay on the paper at all at 50 yards. Not horribly off, but I don't know how to adjust it. This is my first real rifle that I have bought new and need to sight in myself. Kinda lost. How did you adjust your point of impact to the right? I need to pull mine up and right like you did. Also have no idea about the rear sight settings. I messed with them m
  8. Yes, the conversion is legal. When you buy a Saiga, even a regular sporting Saiga, Maryland classifies it as "regulated (pistol paperwork)" because of the AK style receiver (bear with me, don't know a lot about Saigas, but I have been buying guns in MD for a few years). Once your paperwork goes through, and you get your Saiga, you only need to meet the usual requirements. The barrel length has to be legal(or apply for SBR), we DO have a magazine cap here, and obviously you need to follow 922r compliance regs. The magazine cap is less than 20 rounds IN state, but the state law says that you
  9. I went to a local gun show a week or two ago here in MD, and it was kind of the same way. One vendor would have a stock Saiga for $600+, the next for $350, and the next would have a converted (Cheap, with real thin and flimsy PG) for $650. I even had one vendor tell me I could get a .223 or .308 for ~$380, the shotties were around ~$450 (didn't matter what GA), but the 7.62x39 was going to cost $650 STOCK if he could even find one. I called around, and ended up finding someone that had a 7.62x39 in 16" (stock) for $420 OTD NIB. Still $100+ more expensive than when I priced them out a fe
  10. I may try and make it. I just bought my first Saiga, so I am not going to have a whole mess of money for ammo. Maybe I will hop in the GFs 4cyl, and come down with a .22 and maybe 100 rounds for the Saiga. I really want to try a .308 bolt gun or a .308 Saiga. Plus it would be nice for a more experienced shoot to critique my rifle techniques. I was "trained" with handguns, but self taught with rifles.
  11. Sounds awesome. I don't know anything about 5.45x39 though. 7.62x54 would be cool, but isn't that basically a NATO .308? Either way, if they do come, I will snatch one up, but I am not holding my breath. I am not expecting a semi-auto, let alone an AK receiver, to be a possibility next year after elections.
  12. Thanks again for all the responses. The .308 is tempting, who doesn't want a .308?! But, realistically, and financially, I think the 7.62x39 makes more sense for me right now. Money is tight enough that I am having a hard time just stocking up a reasonable amount of ammo for "Just in case," and a .308 would just make it harder. I think the 7.62x39 would do everything I need it for just fine, and as someone said, I could always try and swap for a .308 if I decide to go that route later. Besides, I think I would rather have a bolt gun for an accurate round like the .308 anyway.. just need t
  13. That is part of the reason for buying a new rifle. $1 a round is waay to much, and I cannot shoot anywhere near as much as I want to. I know 7.62 is dirt cheap, but isn't there .308 military surplus what can be bought cheap too? I am more into plinking than anything, but do plan to start target shooting much more in the future. I have never hunted anything other than small birds with a .22, so it will be a new learning experience for me. I don't think a different caliber will help too much if I am just starting out, will it? On the subject of plinking, is there a difference in SHORT
  14. Hello all. Great site you have here. I want to buy a new rifle before elections, but I cannot make a decision on which rifle is right for me. I am young, so I don't have the opportunity to buy more than one. Gotta make this one count. Anywhere, here goes the questions. .308 recoil. I am sure this comes up a lot, and I did a few searches before I posted this. I still haven't found the answer I was looking for, as everyone obviously perceives recoil differently. I am not recoil sensitive in handguns, but I think I am very sensitive in rifles. Let me explain what feels good to me, an
