In order to be "100% LEGAL" as you put it, your rifle must be compliant with the New York Assault Weapons Ban, which means no telescoping or folding stocks, sorry. I'm in NY and my rifle is legal because it has a FIXED STOCK, NO bayonet lug or flash hider. The magazines are pre-ban and I do not think I will have any problems using them.

To take the safety off, take off the top cover of the rifle and merely pull it up until it is like this : | straight up at a 90 degree angle. Then it should easily pull right out of the hole.

I was nervous on screwing up my Saiga 7.62x39 but now it's in the AK configuration. It's easy as pie.

Observations from my first conversion

Yes, let's just go with the highly unlikely scenario instead of the more likely one. -
im no legal expert but i doubt that would satisfy NJ or NY It sure wouldn't, it has to be permanently attached via welding or silver soldering.

Cant shoot anymore because ammo is too hard to find
Big Boss replied to SaigaDude's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
The brass cased Yugo is only reloadable if you have the gear to reload Berdan primers (it is possible, just a PITA). You can modify the cases to use boxer primers, if you care enough. Just keep it, that way if another ban rolls around, your "$450" gun will be worth $1,200+ easy. -
It is a flash suppressor.....it also has a small amount of muzzle brake as well. Scott Let us NYers know when you got one that is NY legal (slant muzzlebrake welded onto those threads). :-D

Got any pics? I mangled mine pretty bad, but the damage is cosmetic only. What'd you do to break it? :-P

Observations from my first conversion
Big Boss replied to Big Boss's topic in Saiga Rifle Conversions
Honestly, I'd recommend fitting the mags to the rifle instead of the rifle to the mags. I had to eat away a lot of metal to get the mags to fit. -
It's 100% done now : See my observations here.
-
I am guessing it's almost the same, except you've got to do extra work if you want to use AK magazines. Quick 7.62x39 conversion breakdown : -remove expanded shoulder, punch out pins, pull out retainer spring, remove guts -Remove sporter plate and re-use / discard trigger-guard -Insert new US-made guts -Drill and tap / rivet bullet guide (AKA feed ramp) into place -Shave mag catch with a GOOD Dremel tool or shave magazine tab to fit with AK mags (be really careful, you are going to remove a LOT of metal to make the mags fit. Don't go crazy, go slow and just fit as you grin

How do the Skeleton Stocks compare to converted?
Big Boss replied to Rolyasm's topic in Saiga Rifle Conversions
It's really all depends on if you want to have to rely on US mags for 922® if you're planning on using mags with more than 10 rounds for rifles and 5 for shotguns. The triggers on factory Saigas are terrible, the Tapco G2 is leaps and bounds ahead of it. -
First time Saiga owner starting conversion TIPS??
Big Boss replied to roadracerx's topic in Saiga Rifle Conversions
I'm no pro, but it was my first time converting and I did it : http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=35800 Maybe some of that will help. -
1st trip to the range- 7" to 8" bench rest groups at 100yard
Big Boss replied to coloradowildman's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Jeez. Did you check your rifling or crown for any damage / defects? -
Honestly, the retaining plate is better, spend the extra money and pick one up

Dude, I have absolutely no skills at all and I converted my gun. Unlike you, I had access to a drill press and an air-compressor-powered grinder, so I had it a little easier, but I didn't do anything you couldn't do with a Dremel Tool and a good, variable-speed cordless drill. Trust me, it's easy as pie, just go slowly and carefully follow the instructions available. Also, from getting the guts out to putting it back together took no longer than 2 hours, it was easy as breathing.

Hey, just so you know, you don't have to grind down both sides of the rivets. My uncle just ground down the ones on the outside and punched 'em right out!

Ontario county. There are several sites I have found that ship steel AK magazines to NY (since steel mags are pre-ban, even the ones called "new production") http://www.44mag.com http://www.jgsales.com http://whatacountry.com/ak-47.aspx

Remember me from page 13? I am 99% done, just gotta get some pre-ban AK mags and mod it to use them. Thanks to : Dinzag - for supplying the parts I needed for this conversion and being extremely, extremely helpful and friendly. Dinzag runs a top-notch business and this conversion was possible because of him. YOU RULE, DINZAG! nalioth - for so much advice, encouragement and some hardware 22 Shooter - for accepting my request that he back me up should I need it, and for his words of encouragement Kwitag on IRC - for a link to oodles of pre-94 mags ernestmayhand o

Yep, they're the same.

Thanks a lot for this video, I'm attempting my first conversion soon and this made me feel a lot more confident about it.

Simplest way to be 922® without doing the PG is get the Galil-style fore-end from Tapco and use Surefire magazines.
