  1. nice... not everyone in academia is this way. but i think the ones who aren't are smart enough to keep their mouths shut. this is a bad time to speak out against the "Yes We Can!" movement.
  2. before i got my saiga i shot 8mm mauser. it's a sad time when it's cheaper to buy 8mm bullets than it is 7.62... at least with 8mm you can still find the old eastern european milsurp packs at most gun stores. i went to my local store the other day looking for 7.62 and they tried to sell me a 20 pack of Fiocchi for 10 bucks. no way. c
  3. man you guys are great. thanks for the quick response. let's just hope i don't somehow manage to break something. -c
  4. i'm trying to remove the handguard on my 7.62. i see the screw that holds the front strap in, and another screw on the receiver. do i just unscrew these and it will fall right off? do i need to hammer or tap something out of position? sorry for the noob question, but i can't see to find any posts explaining this and i don't want to mess up my new gun. thx c
  5. i pulled out the dremel and picked up a chinese milsurp mag. the factory mag still makes that "snapping" noise and fits quite snug. the milsurp mag doesn't mag the snapping noise, and i can see that the lever isn't completely snapped back, but it still holds pretty tight. same amount of wiggling as the factory mag. at this point i don't want to shave off any more for fear of messing something up. turns out the promag "AK mag" may not even be for an AK, i don't know. my other mags have a protrusion, like a small tab, that catches the lever. the promag just has about an inch long ver
  6. that's cool, i actually have a grinding stone for my dremel. just to make sure i've got this right, all i have to do is make incremental shaves to get a few 16ths of an inch off the top of the lever? these are probably dumb questions, but: 1) my saiga is still stock. i'm going to get a bullet guide pretty soon though. will the factory clip fall right out if i do this? ie will the lever be too small to catch the protrusion on the back of the factory's 10 rd mag? 2) the only 30rd mag i have is a promag that i got before i read about promag's mixed reputation on here. i'll go find so
  7. hello all. i'm wondering if there's a quick and easy way to remove the mag catch lever and file down the bottom so my saiga x39 will accept standard AK mags. i guess i'm looking for a [hopefully picture-equipped] tutorial on removing the mag catch lever, and some advice on how much to cut off and what to do the cutting with. sorry if this is answered elsewhere, i've been looking around the relevant sections and don't see any specific instructions, just general information on what gets done. ... shot my baby for the first time yesterday. 40 rounds of wolf ammo at an NRA small
  8. first post. glad to be here. just to make sure, if i do conversion work on my factory x39 to make it 922R compliant, i DO NOT need to fill out one of these forms? A Form 1 is for making a short barrel rifle or shotgun, in most cases.
