How tough are Russian orange bakelite mags really?
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
TAPCOS have a date wheel with the last two digits of the year, with an arrow in the middle that points at the month. In California, the cut off for rebuild kits was 1-2014. My latest rebuild kit is dated "5-13". In reality, however, we can still buy individual parts: follower, spring base, mag body, just not all at once, even if disassembled. I only used new bodies and base plates from the Tapco "kits," with the original spring, follower, and base plate locking plate from the rusted/dented Com-Block steels. I kept the base plates of the rusted/dented to prove I had them, but tossed th -

I like the Circle 10s, also. I had some in free America. Unfortunately, I am limited to magazines I had before 1-1-2000. Until 1-1-14, I could get "rebuild kits" (complete magazines, disassembled). Once I heard they were closing the door on those, I grabbed the Tapcos because they were cheap. I could not do $40 a pop for the Bulgie "kits" if you could find them at all. Hmmm... Maybe I'll just stick the "Bakies" back in the safe. Living in Kalifornication is hazardous to high capacity magazines. I can possess my "High capacity magazine feeding devices (more than 10 round mags), sinc -

Cool was when I had my Poly-Tech Type 56 AK with the folding spike bayonet and a chest rig full of CHINESE bakelites! It shot 2 MOA with lacquer coated, steel core Chicom ammo I had to sell it on 2000 after I was forced out on disability from the Sheriff's Dept. -
I have a stack of the later Tula (flat and late ridge back) bakelites (with the steel reenforcement in the lips). I've had them for years, from back when I had a Roberti-Roos California RAW (registered assault weapon) Type 56 Poly Tech that I finally sold. I actually had a lot more of the Russian bakelites. Besides buying wholesale lots of magazines and selling them on Shotgun News and as an FFL gun shows in the 80s and 90s, I had a collection of one of each type and /maker, including some ridgebacks and long necks. I sold off the last of the collection (except for this set of Tulas) a year or

SGM 30 round Magazines online for $24
imarangemaster replied to Tarheel72's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Those are good prices! -
Whatever someone is willing to pay. Some people, like myself, could care less. Some people, who want to make an illegal machine gun and risk 20 years, will pay whatever someone asks!

California Features Modified Saiga
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
The mag carrier is from Galati Int. I have had one of there 30 round AR bags like it for 20 years, and used it as an LEO. TUFF STUFF! The gas tube is a direct fit, but I had to cut the top edges of the factory handguard to make is fit, nothing else. -

Good price. They have been selling for $29 to $35 for more years than I can count. I have had good luck with Cope's in the past, too. -
Very Cool!

Heads up on Saiga Dragunov stocks $49!
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Since I have stacks of pre-bans (I had a registered AK in 1990) I want mine featureless. This way it is easy to change out when I cross the border into Nevada or Oregon several times a year each. I actually REALLY like the feel of it! Grasping the front of the mag and pulling back into the shoulder, it really sucks in for a great cheek weld. I have never personally been a fan of the Tapco T-6. I tried it on my first Saiga, but restored it instead. I am not a pistol grip snob, so I think it is also a viable option for some folks. I just prefer stock or Saiga skeleton stock. -
HESSE/BLACKTHORNE does better with AK stuff than AR stuff. I have bought surplus AK stuff from them with no problem. Their AR kits, however, and another story.....

California Features Modified Saiga
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
The same day I took the Saiga to the range, I also took my new "California Featureless" 16" Mid-Length AR build to the range to sight in. I actually had more fun shooting the Saiga than the Middy build! -
Nate, is that you? How are you doing?

Heads up on Saiga Dragunov stocks $49!
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
HAHA! I know. I paid $99 for mine a few years back, sold it last year for $79 +$8 S&H when I converted the Saiga to pistol grip. I just ordered one of these for my current Saiga, since this one I am leaving factory. I really liked it when I used it on my last Saiga (before conversion) when I'd go up to Oregon. -
Centerfire Systems has the "Siaganov" style Izmash factory made skeleton stocks for $49! I personally believe these are a reasonable alternative to a pistol grip conversion. For those of us behind enemy lines in California (and New York), it is nice to have when taking the rifle into "Free America" for an easy switch. I have one, and have used it when I go to my daughter's in Oregon. The cheek rest rotates up into place for scope use, for a great cheek weld. I grasp the forward edge of the magazine, using it almost as a forward grip, pulling the weapon abck into the shoulder, for more sta

California Features Modified Saiga
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Thanks. I REALLY love this Saiga. All my previous incarnations of saigas (two .223, and 4 7.62s) I eventually restored to pistol grip. Always I did such a nice job "restoring them" (i.e. plum or Russian Red furniture, East German folding stocks, 24mm FSBs, etc.) I would get people offering more $$$ for them than I could refuse, and I would, of course, sell them (being an entrepreneur at heart) . Even my last Saiga, that I bought just under two years ago (after moving back to the People's Republik of Kalifornication), I ended up restoring with Russian red AKM furniture. It was too pretty a -
California Features Modified Saiga
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Well, took it to the range to dial it in. I wanted it POI/POA at 25 yards for my zero (good to about 250+). The Factory certificate said 133mm at 100 Meters, so about 5 inches at 100 yards. Well, I have found with the prior 6 Saigas I have had through the years, Ivan RARELY takes the time to do a careful group for the test, especially if it is a Monday, and he had too much Stolichnaya (Vodka) the week end before. This thought was re-enforced by the fact, the front sight was to one side, and barely came close to the black! After a little dialing in on an AK 25 yard zero target, I got -
California Features Modified Saiga

That picture was last year, and was actually the saiga before this one. That one had a vented gas tube. Then I converted to this: and then ended up selling it because I didn't like the paddle. -

Question for anyone who has a used a Dinzag bullet guide.
imarangemaster replied to mini14jac's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
My last couple I got from CSS, but I think they get them from Danzig. I never noticed any where on mine, even shooting steel case ammo. -
When Saigas first came out, we used to tease about them being made out of Tank steel left over from WW2 German tanks! Saiga steel is VERY hard!
-
Saigas in stock form are still VERY popular in "Californication". If left stock, or at least not converted to pistol grip, they do not need a "bullet button" and fixed 10 round or less magazines. If you are like me, and have high capacity magazines that you possessed in California, prior to the ban in 1-1-2000, you can use them in the Saiga. They can still be decent weapons in this "California Featureless" configuration.

Dang! I figured the EO would hurt the forums, but not this bad. How about Kalashnikov USA or whatever it is called? I still see tons of Century a RWA modified weapons. I do know they have been scarce in CA, and run $575 and up on Gunbroker. Considering I paid $289 for my first Saiga (a 223) in 2008. I've had about 7 (counting the one in 10 day jail), and the price has gone up steadily. The last one I got (before the current one) was a couple days before the import ban hit. IIRC, I paid about $575 out the door with Tax and DROS. Besides the EO, I guess, there is also the proliferation

I don't co-witness on my saiga or on my 582 Series Mini-14. I either use irons or pop on the red dot. When I had an M4gery build, I did co-winess, but the AR platform is much more suited for a co-witness set up than AKs or Minis, etc.

Dust cover mounts are an exercise in frustration. It is impossible to keep it zeroed. Use either a low-rise Midwest Industries mount, which is just above the cover, or a Scout type mount with a gas tube with rail attached. I have a Tasco Accu-Dot red dot shotgun scope on a Midwest mount, and it holds zero perfectly, even when removing and replacing. One problem with gas tube mounts is that they "cook" your red dot, especially cheap ones, if you do long range sessions and build up heat.
