I'm assuming that yours is a 16" barrel, is that correct? Don
  2. Thanks Indy, I thought that everyone was seeing the "warn" and was getting a little paranoid. I try not to be an offensive poster. Don
  3. Can someone tell me why I have a "warn" 0%" note on my post? I have never been anything but polite, that "warn" infers to me that I have been a troublemaker. I'd appreciate it taken off as I don't see it on members with fewer posts than I have. Thanks, Don.
  4. For Tokageko, the individual whose words are on your signature is truly operating in a delusional world. I don't have any unique insights but the monstrous crime surges experienced by the UK and Australia following gun bans should but will not prove to the unthinking that banning guns just doesn't work even if you were to overlook the injustice involved. But then, I'm "preaching to the choir". Too bad that Pam doesn't realize that a gun ban will make her children's world less rather than more safe. Sad that people have these views. Don
  5. What's the range? Can't evaluate the shooting without knowing the distance. Don

    Range Trip

Went to the range with my .308 today. Like the two previous trips, flawless functioning, enjoyed it quite a bit. Also liked the Hi-Viz X-coil recoil pad I installed on it. I realized that I have been BS'ing myself since I returned the new scope that had malfuctioned. Eyes too old to do well with a blade rear sight so far forward. Also have a hard time getting my cheek weld down low enough to get the high front sight into a proper position in the rear blade. Must get a scope for it to do more than blast away. Don
  7. That's interesting. I emailed them and got no reply. Don
  8. Does anyone make a receiver cover that will mount a commercial peep rear sight? I know Krebs is planning on one but that is a couple months away. Thanks. Don
  9. Don't understand the comment that the Saiga .308 was loud. Without a muzzle brake, it shouldn't be any louder than any other .308 and shouldn't be louder than your "neighbor's" 30-06, if anything slightly quieter using a little less powder and having slightly less energy. I wouldn't know, I never shoot without ear plugs and frequently double ear protection. Don
  10. I may be in the minority, but my .308 Saiga has a very acceptable trigger. It has some creep but I've learned to get a good feel for when the sear will "break." I also like the wood stock. Not knocking the synthetics and thumbholes, I've seens some very good looking setups on this forum but I'm leaving mine as it is. Good luck on the decision. Don
  11. I'm not going to criticize ARs but I DO like how reliable the .308 Saiga I have is. Three times to the range and not even a hint of a problem, it just hammers the rounds out. It seems quite accurate although being certain of that will take time, the Bushnell I got for it broke and is going back to Midway. An incredible bargain at $285. It would be a fine deal at twice the price. Don
  12. Shot some Federal Premium 150gr Barnes Triple Shock ammo and got 2752fps/2535ft lbs. Australian ammo went 2794 fps. Don't know what the weight of the Australian slugs are. This is in the 22" barrel. Don
  13. Well, I'm not being cynical here, I appreciate the responses but I'm not inclined to take a mallet to the muzzle area of my gun. It shoots very nicely as it is and I want the full 22" of barrel the gun has. Don
  14. I'm new to AKs/Saigas. The front sight is apparently pinned on and if I'm not mistaken, pins are driven out in only one direction. Which, left to right or right to left? On my .308, the sight also appears to be "finished" in place, will removing the sight leave an ugly unfinished area at the end of the barrel? As you've assumed, I have a scope mounted on it and the front sight is very visible in the view through the scope. Thanks for any info you can provide. Don
  15. I consider myself a neophyte on this site so I'm not posting as a fount of knowlege. I think that Saiga changed its forend design on later production items. I say this only because I've seen postings showing broken wood/synthetic and the portion that mates with the receiver is quite different from mine which I'm rather certain is a newer model. Mine was straight from CDNN at the time of the posts. Don
  16. I believe that the Saiga has a 1 in 300 or 320mm twist or 1 in 12 or 13 (correct me if I"m wrong). Most US .308s are 1 in 10. That suggests that the Saiga may not adequately stabilize heavier slugs. Does anyone know how heavy you can go at standard velocities? I'd assume 165 is about it, perhaps 180 at shorter ranges. Comments? Thanks, Don.
  17. I though I'd add to the chorus. Nice job, it appears to be very well executed. Don
  18. I'm happy with my BuffferTechnologies buffer. Don
  19. I'll add this again. Both the Saiga owner's manual and the EAA gunsmiths say not to use ammo like the Hornady Mags or the Federal High Energy loads. I've spoken with Hornady and they reemphasize that statement and Federal states that on the ammo box itself. These loads create excess bolt velocity. Don't think it is worth the wear on the gun for the few extra FPS you'll get. Just my opinion/2 cents worth. Don
  20. I've seen several posts here that say that the standard 8 round Saiga .308 mags can be converted to hold 10 rds. Would someone explain the procedure and what are the risks i.e., foul up and ruin the mag etc? Thanks, Don

    Velocity

I'd say yes the comply with SAAMI but I've spoken to Hornady and they say that their magnum loads cause excessively high bolt velocity in semis. Federal specifically says on the ammo box itself not to use their high energy ammo in semi autos. I guess I'm conservative enough that I don't want to blow off the advice of these reputable manufacturer's. I"d guess that the guns would handle it but would take an unnecessary beating for a few extra fps. Don
  22. I mentioned this on another thread. The Saiga manual specifically says not to use high energy/mag ammo and that's the same answer I got from the EAA gunsmiths. Don

    Velocity

The Saiga manual (such as it is) and the EAA gunsmith recommend you not use any magnum loads such as the Hornady mags and Federal high energy rounds. My stuff was generic, standard velocity ammo. Don

    Velocity

As I said on my first post on the high cap magazine thread, I've been following this forum but couldn't for some reason post so I registered with a different name and this time it worked. I have a 22" .308. Mine chronographed 2805fps with generic Winchester 150 gr ammo, 2780 with Australian surplus. Want to try some Federal Premium with 150gr Barnes Triple Shocks to see what they run at. I'll post my results. Anyone else have some chrono data on the .308s? Don
