  1. Saiga barrel is 1:9 twist. The 70/75gr loads are best with 1:7 twist. Try it and find out. Some have no problems, some report bad groups or minor keyholing.

I doubt your intruder will care what your 200yd group size is, or if the bullets are keyholing, because he will be down.

When I'm gleaning information here on the forum, I see a lot of sensible recommendations, as well as key expert knowledge, yours tends towards the latter and you respond to so many of us newbies... once again, thanks for the info. I'll feel better having something other than green tip 855's to use in the house...a lot of holes in a lot of buildings, vehicles, etc to repair even if you make contact with the intruder every time. Can you recommend a good economic CQB ammo?

anything you can find 55gr-69gr BTHP. the 70gr-77gr BTHP will work for for HD/CQB at that distance, but much over 100 yards i would stay in the first size bracket i mentioned.

personally...IMHO, i think key holes are your friend in a defensive CQB situation...just sayin

  2. yep, they sit too low for many of the Saigas.

do you have a flat or round trunnion? I believe they work better with the flat trunnion due to a slightly different bullet guide height.

in mine, they sit low enough that although they work 90% of the time, every so often the bolt will ride-over a round and dig into the case about halfway through its length, rather than pushing from the rear of the case rim. even after adjusting the latching tabs on the magazine so that the mag sits extremely tight in the magwell, as high up as possible, this still can happen.

mags that have been rebuilt with new AR springs and followers still exhibit this problem. the mag seating height is clearly the problem when you inspect it very closely.

if they work 100% for you, great. my mag preference lies elsewhere due to these problems. they also will not work with a 5.56 AK-74 I'm building, due to trunnion differences - the Galil mags will not fit into an AK-74 trunnion.

I have a Flat trunnion in mine.

  3. if you can get them, use Galil 35rd mags! you get the bonus of having 5 extra rounds and they were MADE for 223/556 to begin with so you know they're gonna feed as long as you have a feed ramp installed...

Galil 35 round steel magazines are problematic in many of the newer Saigas with dimpled receivers.

seriously? ive never had any problems.

  4. I've been eyeballing your quads for the rifle for a while now but I can't seem to see from the pix if it has a receiver alignment tab to line them up straight. I had the Midwest industries quads and I took them off and literally threw then in the garbage because I spend hours trying to align them and couldnt do it and my optics were always crooked!

    Let me know!

  5. its normal in all my AK experiences for them to beat the ever loving shit out of brass! one of my buddies has a saiga 223 that has been known to actually knock primers out of brass as well.

  6. I know where to get good gear, but where can i get replacement webbing and snap buckles and stuff like that in bulk to repair gear? who are some of the suppliers that places like BCS , HSGI, TT and other companies get their stuff from? Id like to keep a couple rolls of coyote colored webbing around in various widths and extra buckles, side release clips and things of that nature around incase i need them in a pinch.

  7. I know that many on here do their own conversions. I am considering that, but would prefer to have it done correctly/professionally. If my gun had been purchased for the 2007-2010 prices, maybe I would be more inclined. Unfortunately, it wasn't. I still have under a grand in it, which includes a nice ATI pistol grip and stock, extra high-cap mags, etc. However, it is still in the "sporter" config.

Does anyone have knowledge of a reputable gunsmith, specifically qualified to do great work on Saigas, in the northern Indiana area...Indy would be fine too?

I think that I could do an acceptable job with moving the FCG, but......I might want more.

Wow, seriously?!? the guns are still the same and the conversion work hasnt changed. nothing a vise, drill, punch and hammer cant handle...

  8. Over 2,000rds through my 5.45 and about 1,500rds through the 7.62. Both firing pins fully intact. I don't understand why you're so worried about this. It is an EXTREMELY rare occurance.

I am new to rifles, and I have a Saiga and a Mini 14. The firing pin does break on the Mini 14, and I was wondering if it breaks on the Saiga as often as it does on the Mini 14..

please tell me this is a sick joke?!? How the hell can you even COMPARE a Mini-14 to an AK?!?

    Mini-14 = Pansy gun

    AK/Saiga = PROVEN BATTLE TANK!!!

I made the mistake of owning a Mini-14 once. it was the biggest POS ive ever had in my entire life, and I blame that gun for my complete and total hatred of Ruger these days. The gun spit about 6" groups at 50 yards off a sandbag...no joke! it hated steel (bulk) ammo and broke firing pins on a regular basis when i used it due to the Hardened primers. Needless to say I sold it and dont regret it.

  9. its time to get my AK Rig squared away! I need a top quality rig and I have been considering either the "Attack Rack" V2 by US Palm or something genuine RUSSIAN military, but the trouble is that I dont know much about the Russian gear. I know thet the Ruskies are using molle gear now which is a big plus, but I cant tell quality from junk on their stuff as ive never seen any of it in person. One good place I found is a sight called "SRVV" that has a lot of stuff in Multicam and Russian SURPAT which i like.

please help me figure this out

P.S. this has to work for 762, 545 & 223 AK mags. and the site i mentioned above also carries SAIGA 12 8rd open top mag pouches too!!!

  10. Hey all!

I know its been forever since i posted here and i missed you all! I've had a Burris 2.75 power scout scope laying around for over a year that I bought for an SKS project that has since been shitcanned cause I decided to do something else with the SKS. Anyway, long story short. I have an Ultimak rail on my 7.62 saiga and I was pondering around with the idea of mounting the scope on the AK in essence of having a REAL AK scout rifle! I want to use quick detachable rings so i cant quickly swap between my Aimpoint T-1 and the Scout Scope, but I need to know what ring height will be high enough to clear the rear sight block on the AK since the Ultimak is already pretty low. I think Burris' Medium quick detact may be too low at 1/2", but im not sure that the High rings arent too high at 1"

im open to all thoughts and suggestions, as me and my rifles are constantly evolving!
