  1. JK, My drill press is broke so I used a dremel with a carbide tip and side cut the lugs. IE instead of cutting the bottom up to the top, I marked how high they needed to go on the side of the lug then cut the lug towards the side of the receiver wide enough to clear the mag. Came out fine, just go slow, measure twice, cut once. Good luck!
  2. You can build up the front of the mag with epoxy, or a smooth headed screw. I would suggest though to get Dinzag's bullet guide kit. It is super easy.
  3. Glad I got mine for $239. Oppppssss sorry for pouring salt......

    Who's your daddy?

Thanks Bro! The red dot is a bit high for me but I'm a left eyed right handed shooter so it kind of works out I guess. +1 for Dinzag's stuff. PS Dinzag also has the proper 14x1 tap kit for .223's including the TAT not found in most kits.
  5. I had to break off the main bottom plate and then remove it from the trigger guard by bench grinding the backside down. I guess you could heat treat the metal to remove some of the hardness.
  6. Because a hunting stock on an AK is just plain wrong Actually, I shot an unconverted S12 with slugs at the range this weekend and forgot how much I didn't like it. The pistol grip on my S12 helps me absorb much more of the recoil. Better balance and better trigger pull is welcome be me. To each his own.

    Who's your daddy?

Went shooting yesterday and met a fellow forum member (rapid firing from an AGP mag gives it away I can say.... she shoots without a hitch! Unmodified Galil mags click in and fire without any issues Unmodified M16 mags click in and fire without any issues. I used FMJ and HP remington for the test. Much thanks to Dinzag for the feed ramp, handguard mount, and upper gas tube. Need a 223 TAT for the muzzle break. Its official, the ORF M16 mag adapter is a very worthy S223 addition! Here she is: The last pic shows how the feed ramp needs to be modified for
  8. Yo bro, Good to meet you at the range the yesterday. No I would think there was something defective with the buffer or you've been shooting magnums on the low gas setting. I think I got a blackeye from that slug you let me shoot But I would call Randy at Blackjack, send him the pic, and he'd probably send you another one.
  9. Dunno what to tell you. I just got a S223 and it locked in AK74 mags fine. Then added the M16 adapter and will lock in M16/AK74/Galil mags now. See my long thread with photos under 223 called who's your daddy. I would sugeest finding an AK74 mag and taking it with you to see if the front will lock into the trunion before you buy. Either way, a dremel is your friend. I've converted a single stack WASR to hi-cap and my S223 to M16, its not that big of a deal, just go slow.
  10. Any idea where to get a 223 TAT? EDIT to answer my own question - Dinzag will make one for anyone needing one. PS - all you'll do is knarl up the end of the barrel without it
  11. Now now its not that bad but I still need to come up with a fix for stock AK style mags so they are not loose. 74's are tightest at the trigger guard and stock orlites are tightest at the front trunion. I won't get to shoot til next week but I think the stock mags will work but be loose. I am coming up with a fix for the looseness. Modified orlites would be even worse.

    S-223-96?

Good idea. The catch is how high will the M96 mag well hold the magazine in relation to the bolt head and an M16 Mag won't fit in the Saiga mag well to start with hence half the mods shown in my thread. Look at the M16 vs Ak74 mag picture. It just won't fit unless you get out the dremel or mod the M16 mag which defeats the purpose of my conversion. Magpul mags will require the least mods to the gun.

    Who's your daddy?

Dinzag's parts came in today. Cleared up the jams, though I needed to polish the feed ramp. So, so far she'll hand cycle a whole mag fine. Won't get to shoot it til next week. One thing is the locking tab is at an angle and needs to be smacked down so that its parallel with the gun when locked in. That was keeping the rear of the mag too low and causing the bolt to skip over the case head and hang on the shell. Also these mods mean you can lock in a Galil mag without shaving down the sides. We'll see if the mods cause any jams on the Galil mag when I take it out next week. thanks f

    Who's your daddy?

Its all relative for strength to start with. I was concerned about cutting down the locking lugs til I looked at the 223 vs my S12 and other AKs (overkill to prevent hi cap mags). The side of the trunion don't really get cut down much, most of it is the rivet which is why it might be advisable to swap to a 10-32. Most of the trunion removed is radiusing the inside corners and that "meat" is really there to center the mag. If it were FA 762x39 I might be concerned but not on SA 223. For what its worth, I hacked up my brand new gun without hesitation. I'll certainly post if there is any issues w
  15. I'm not sure how the 5.45 "failed" vs 5.56. They shoot about the same. Ammo is cheap but corrosive. I have one a each.

    Who's your daddy?

I took her out for a spin today. Fired 20 rounds (that's all I had) without problem except the 2nd to last round. These followers are pretty tipsy. Waiting for some US made mags to get here and Dinzag's bullet guide (which will be better than my 20 minute wanna go shooting creationg this morning).

    Who's your daddy?

No with the exception of possibly replacing the lower rivets with 10-32 botton head screws

    Who's your daddy?

Well I made a make shift bullet guide for the regular spot and it will hand cycle everything except the 2nd to last round. Its a singapore M16 mag and the follower rocks forward and the bolt head gets stuck on top of the round. I think Dinzag's ramp will be just right as he even references the low front lip of the galil mags in the design. Since this adapter was made for a Galil, that is understandable. I ordered a couple US made mags from AIM to see if they have better followers and I'll be interested to see how well Dinzag's guide will work in this. Thanks DYI

This gives me an idea! You could weld a little steel feedramp to the front of the adapter. If you only used AR mags, it would be all you need. Cheaper than buying a bullet guide and no need to risk drilling and taping the trunion. However the mods to the trunion do seem drastic for this adapter to fit... Yep, it would be similar to the one for the 9mm conversion mag well: I'll fiddle with it some this weekend.

    Who's your daddy?

Very true and thanks. I've got tons of $4 AK74 mags from the ORF 12packs but my thoughts are this. I want one rifle that no matter what, I can carry any where, is fairly accurate, uses non-corrosive ammo, booms everytime you pull the trigger, has light but decent range ammo, uses easy to scavenge mags, and uses easy to scavenge ammo. My 47's are heavy with lots of loaded mags, my 74 uses corrosive ammo but the 223 is JUUUUUUSSSTTT RIGHTTTTTT So the mag conversion is more of a backup to me.

    Who's your daddy?

Conversion details: First you will notice that the sides of the adapter are thicker near the bottom. This is because the bottom of the Galil receiver is sloped: Well since the bottom of the stamped receiver is flat, We will either need to open the mag well up or grind down the outside of the adapter. I chose to open the mag well up. You only need to do the front half. Once you have the adapter you will see what I mean. Also the mag lock will slightly rub the receiver, you mileage may vary here, but removed some material for the lock: Next, you will notice that the front o

    Who's your daddy?

I'll add the full details in the next day or so with more pics. The biggest thing is getting the feed ramp and I'm waiting on one now. I may make a temporary one to check function. SHTF was where I was going with this and why I picked up the 223 last week. That Galil link covers alot of the big points like the adapter being a little longer than a standard mag - hit the rear up with a file. The inside radius of the mag opening being not "square" enough NOTE this pic is from the link above and of the Galil mods, the Saiga is similar but more involved.

You have to widen the trunion "ears" for lack of a better term. Very similar to coverting a low cap WASR to hi-cap if anyone's ever done that before. You also need to correspondingly widen the front of the receiver mag opening and "relieve" some metal on the receiver where the new mag latch is.
