  1. Glorious Government here in Marylandistan has ruled that we are so safe no one need carry anything scarier that a pen knife!

I'm so glad to be out of MD. When I worked in the PG, all I had was my Spyderco Native. I still carry my trusty Native, but It has company... a Glock 40 or 9 depending on my mood. All my Glocks fit in my Glaco King Tuk. It will hold 17,19,22,23,26 or 27. The King Tuk is a great IWB holster.

  2. I did get a chance to go out and shoot my new 20" 5.45 Saiga pictured on the first page. The weather was frigidly cold and there were 35MPH winds that day so I didn't bother setting any targets up past 50 yards. With the weather as it was I didn't attempt to shoot for groups. Hopefully when the weather improves I can truly see what it is capable of in terms of precision.

My first impressions on how it shot were great. The iron sights were dead on out of the box. With the heavier and longer barrel it handled recoil like a champ. It had less noticeable recoil and muzzle rise than my Bulgarian 74 with the muzzle break. I certainly don't see any need for a muzzle device of any kind. I can see enough of the muzzle to confirm it doesn't have threads either. I would describe the recoil as close to nonexistent and I saw little muzzle flash.

Rapid firing at multiple targets was a piece of cake. It was front heavy, but not uncomfortably so. The heavier barrel seems to keep the heat in as well, because even after firing three mags in 5 minutes the handguard was still only a little warm. I won’t be bothering with modifying the front end for regular handguards now that I know that, so I can say my conversion is done. However I still intend to put a proper FSB and brake on my 16” saiga. On every target I set up the 20” Saiga outshot my 16” so I am optimistic that with the optic I will get very good groups soon. I put about 200 rounds through it and have had no malfunctions. All in all I am very happy with my purchase and it nicely rounds out my 5.45 collection.

Thanks for the review, that sounds like a great rifle.

  3. IF you are deciding which to convert, the heavy barreled models will not readily accept any hand guard retainer I know of. You options are much more limited swapping barrel parts because of the barrel dimensions (really it's a medium-weight barrel profile, being half way between standard AKM and the RPK's heavy weight barrel- it shares dimensions with the Saiga .308 ONLY AFAIK).

That is a very good point. Probably no chance the barrel is threaded either.

  4. I agree with RED333. I use Glocks for that reason. I got started with them and have become very familiar with the operation. It becomes automatic after a while. I have other handguns, but choose to use the old standby for my ccw. I figure I don't need any suprises in a stressful situation. Plus the mag sharring and holster sharring capabilities are a real bonus. I have a Galco King-Tuck that will handle a compact, mid and fullsize Glock.

  5. I have not swapped the handguards but I would think the retainers would work for US handguards. I have not put a bullet guide in and have fired about 100 rounds without a problem using Polish surplus mags.. Not sure on the muzzle break, I need to fire it some more and then remove it and fire some and see. i don't think the difference was huge.

Thanks for the info. What trigger did you go with? Good job on your build, it looks great!

  6. I'm on the fence about this too, but am strongly leaning towards the 340 for the threaded muzzle. I have a few more questions, sorry to beat a dead horse.....

If I want to add US hanguards, can I use the stock retainers that come with 340? Is it an easy swap?

How much does a muzzle break help? Is it a big difference?

Does the 340 need a bullet giude?

    Thanks

  7. I never give any indication that I am armed. I don't even have a NRA sticker on my car anymore. I am concerned about theft when I lleave a gun in the car. The article is a good read.. Thanks for posting.

I am so glad I left Maryland. I had a few close calls in Baltimore city and PG county. I always felt like a sitting duck, the only protection I had was my spyderco for years.
