  1. As far as durability, I've had failures of both my AK and AR. Everything must be tested befor its performance is vital. Also, your preception of accuracy is off. A quality ak is more than capable on a man sized target past 100 yards. I think the stock saiga irons are realisticly conservative at the 300 yard maximum. Lugging it? Not a valid argument IMHO. I'll carry some more weight to get more firepower. +1 to what Krom said... I'm going to have disagree with your assessment of accuracy. There may be a handful of AK's out there that are capable of hitting center of mass at 2
  2. ...and with an AK you'd better hope and pray that the guy shooting at you isn't any more than 100 yards away. You'd also better hope and pray that you don't have lug the thing 10 miles during the summer. You'd also better hope and pray that the round you shoot into a target doesn't go through and hit an innocent bystander. Etc., etc... Sorry, just couldn't resist Naw seriously though I love my AK and it's a blast to shoot, but the AR is my first choice. I was once like you, but then I actually bought an AR of my own and realized that all the stuff you hear about them (mostly regardin
  3. I'll take a well-lubed AR with a quality magazine (NOT the crap the military uses) over an AK any day, unless we're talking about a polonged (5+ year) zombie apocalypse. I love my AK (see my avatar) and I'll NEVER be without an AK, but to be perfectly honest I find my AR easier to shoot, more ergonomic, much more accurate, and much lighter. I think everyone should own both, but should the crap hit the fan (and I doubt it ever will--and also hope it doesn't) my AK will be my backup, and the AR will be my primary.
  4. ...and Saiga-12.com made it happen. About a year ago I joined this site with an unconverted Saiga. I fought and fought to justify keeping it unconverted (cause I was just a pansy), but eventually gave in. I got all the info/instructions I needed right here, and after 3 successful restorations, I have just helped my first "convert" build his own Saiga AK. Unfortunately, he lives in NJ so we had to keep it to just a PG restoration, but it looks and feels great just the same (just no AK mags, but in NJ you can't use 15+ round mags anyway). He is absolutely ecstatic about it. Here is a pic of the
  5. *sigh* sorry guys, I went with the Sig. Here's the way I look at it: I found a Sig 556 online--brand new--for 1300$ even. Factor in the factory rebate offer and I just paid 1000 dollars for that rifle. Also factor in the second kind of cool look (I prefer it anyway) and the fact that I've been drooling over these things since they came out, and I think it was the best thing for me to do. And here's the deal: if I really hate it, I can always sell it for a little more than I put into it after the rebate offer is up. I can then put that money towards the Colt. I can't however do the same
  6. I think XCR is out of the running cause it's a little pricey-er than what I'm looking to spend, and it has a 1/9 twist. I think I prefer the 1/7.
  7. Ok, so I'm just about ready to take the money I have reserved for this purchase and light it on fire. I can't for the life of me figure out which one of these rifles to buy. I posted this question on AR15.com, and, well, I'm sure you can imagine the copious amounts of bias on that sight. Virtually everyone suggested the Colt (surprise surprise), insisting that piston-driven AR-type rifles were just unnecessary because the DI AR's are "every bit as reliable" as the piston-driven rifles. But then I do a search on military tests comparing different traditional DI and piston-driven rifles and foun
  8. A converted restored Siaga is a Russian AK. Russian AK's are superior in fit and finish and in many cases accuracy to the lower-grade clones like the Romanian WASR-10. Some clones are better, some are worse, but an AK type rifle must be manufactured in Russia to be considered a true AK. The Russian AK's are like the "Colts" in the AR-15 world. As for caliber, that really just depends. I have the 7.62x39 because, well, that's just what the platform was originally designed to shoot, ammo will always be plentiful for it (so far as I know), and the AK round is a proven man-stopper. But, you co
  9. Dude, um, you're my hero. Superman has absolutely nothing on you my friend (ok, except maybe a steel wanker).
  10. just wants to be high...

  11. I'm a huge believer in the Tapco G2, which Tromix has modified to use with the S12. I've never tried Red Star, but I'm in love with my Tapco and am about to replace the trigger that came in my Arsenal SGL-21 (a custom trigger made by Arsenal) with the Tapco.
  12. Ooh, ooh, I know: move to another state! Naw, seriously I feel for you. My bro just had to move to the PRNJ for his job, and had to leave all his guns with me (worked out nice for me though ). If I were you I'd constantly write to various police departments in your state and ask them how they can sleep at night knowing that everyday they go to work they piss on the Constitution that our forefathers bled to write. Yeah, I don't have much sympathy for Cali-cops. IMO, if you're helping to enforce blatantly unjust, oppressive laws then you're just as bad as the scum that wrote them.
  13. I ordered mine from Atlantic Firearms, and I am more than willing to pay their 3% credit card charge for their excellent customer service, even in the midst of a huge "gun rush" that had them swamped with orders (I ordered mine when they were 500$). They were very professional. The one that they were going to ship out to me they said was all scratched up when it got to them from Arsenal because the muzzle break had gotten loose during shipping and scratched up the finish. So they asked me to wait until they got a new shipment of rifles in, and sent me a free 30 round magazine, even though the
  14. Ok, so just to get this out there, I am a huge fan of this rifle. It's a friggin work of art. The pictures speak for themselves. However, I'm having just one problem...neither the Tapco or Thermold *AK-47* magazines that I own will fit in this gun! So what's the deal? Should I modify the magazines, or the rifle? With the Thermold, the lip is hitting the bullet guide that for some reason Arsenal saw fit to make hang way over the edge of the trunnion and into the magazine well. With the Tapco, the magazine catch space isn't quite large enough for the notch on the magazine. I'm a bit concerned.
