  1. Well, you are grandfathered in here in Montana. No need for the hunters safety certificate! Nothing to laugh about. My wife enjoyed the class. I did too although it was mandatory as a kid in my school till some parent bitched about it. That was the beginning of the fruit loops. I shoot blue grouse with my saiga every time I take her out on Warner peak. It's a really good instinctual shooter for birds!

I did the online portion of the class and it took the better part of two days doing it in the background of other work. It was exasperating waiting for it to let me move on from reading a few sentences to answer the question or load the next page. If only the general public had any idea of how little any of it had to do with gun safety or even just responsible hunting. I would say it took me ~16 hours and less than two of that had to do with safety, direct hunting regs, or things like taking a humane effective shot. A few of the bits of advice overgeneralized how firearms worked and would be dangerous if followed literally. Most of the rest was almost laughable if it weren't sad. Mostly indoctrination about politics and opinion about what hunting is for. Apparently it's about sportsmanship and that is the only legitimate justification. I guess they've never heard of subsistence. What a bunch of infuriating Fudd propaganda.

  2. Are you going duck hunting with the Saiga?

Probably not, I'm mostly interested in upland game birds. There are a lot of pheasant and quail in my area, and if I go NE, a lot of turkey. I've likely missed this season. I've been meaning to hunt for years but something always came up and interfered. I've shot plenty of vermin but not game. You may laugh, but it's a lack of hunter's safety certification holding me back this season. There is not a skills test open until the spring within 75 miles. If I am lucky I will get in through a waiting list and get a day or two of casual quail hunting in.

I just uploaded these pictures because someone else wanted to know how to plug a mag.

  3. They really are. It's an achievement to get a compliment on guns from a guy like you. If you feel like driving to the Palm Springs of Washington, you are welcome to give it a shot in an I-594 compliant competition. We'll come up with rules that suit us.

This was a gift from a close friend. The negative stuff you see on reviews is true. The slide is heavy for the ammo, they need a polish in the chamber to improve extraction. They are a nuisance to tear down. (You are not really intended to do so for normal cleaning.) Oddly, the cheaper version, Model 422, etc. Are more reliable than the target version, since they have lower slide mass. They definitely want hotter .22 ammo, so your eley subsonic target stuff is for other guns.  I really like the mag release location. They take Model 41 mags so the mags are pricey, but will always be available.

But that fails to tell the story. They have an oddly vertical grip angle that feels really good when you use it. The heavy lug over the barrel stabilizes for fast and natural followups. You basically stay on target. Since the barrel is held in by a bushing from the end, a suppressor adapter is $24. And since the lug and sights are over the bore, these are the ideal suppressor host.

They are one of those guns that everyone you hand it to immediately hits with, no matter how bad a shot they normally are. The gun just makes you feel like a pro.

I want to eventually have a matched pair of these, with adjustable sights on the rear. Also matching baby version set. (model 2213). Suppressors obviously need to happen, along with a breifcase with passport slots, because why not... It's not my highest priority in life, but I have standing searches so I can pounce on opportunities as they arise.
