Yo fellas,
I'm looking into picking up a scope mount for my .308 since the factory one doesn't work after I converted to pistol grip. Question is this: I was thinking about getting this one:
http://www.leapers.com/pages/mounting%20sy...-mnt-978-c.htm#
but I don't know if my weaver style rings will fit on a picatinny rail. I'm guessing most scope rings will go on a picatinny rail?
Even as I write this it sounds like the stupidest question I've ever read! I've never dealt with much else besides iron sites on a gun, so I'm totally ignorant.
Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hey guys, I have been trying to find a solution to threading the S-.308 barrel and came up with this:
http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?prod...=290&page=1
Will these work with barrel diameter and all that? Or is the S-.308 barrel too big and would have to be turned down? Also, I know that 14x1 LH threads are standard for .30 cal brakes, so what is the standard cal. on brakes for 15x1? I hear the HK 91's in .308 were 15x1 as well as the HK 93's in .223. How 'bout 22x1.5? Can you get .30 cal brakes in 22x1.5? If 22x1.5 isn't standard enough, maybe the FSB could be turned to 15x1, or dare I say 14x1? These guys say that they use them on their conversions, but I'm not sure what their process is:
http://www.ak-103.com/rifles.html
Just wonderin' if anybody has any info. Thanks.
BTW, does anybody know of a good AK smith I could ship my guns to so as I could get some quality work done on 'em? My 'smith isn't familiar at all with AK's, so if somebody has a resource, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
For the .308, you're going to have to turn the barrel down to accomodate any other FSB and brake. I installed a Romanian FSB on mine and threaded it 14mmx1.0LH. The FSB has the detent to retain the muzzle devices and I can use anything a 7,62 AK uses on the muzzle (personal preference). I could hook you up if you lived in my area, but I don't have a FFL so unless you can remove the barrel from the rifle shipping me the rifle is out of the question.
So how'd you turn the barrel down? It's damn near impossible to put an AK in a lathe and get the barrel spinning true enough to turn it. If it's possible for me to do it on my own then I'd deffinitely be willing to learn. Thanks.

Well, I'll probably end up going with 15x1 RH, manly cauze its the easiest. BTW, I think I remember my brother telling me he's got a gun guy who knows where to get a plethora of HK91/93 brakes, and your right, if I want something in 15x1, I should have someone make it for me. I know Rick-16 does brakes, as well as Dinzag, or even Precise Innovations does the brake thing. In short, you're right; thanks for the input.

So! I've done some research and come to these conclusions:
1.) Most all .30 cal. flash hiders and brakes are 14x1 LH - the most common. I'm going to end up threading the barrel on my 7.62x39 in 14x1 LH. I just wish I could do the same for my .308s!
2.) 15x1 RH is what the G3 rifle is threaded for, but I'm not sure in what caliber the brakes are machined to. I know that this thread is easiest to thread a Saiga .223 in, because of the OD on the barrel.
3.) 1/2x28 RH is what the AR-15/M-16 (.223) is threaded for, thus this is the common thread for .223 (the easiest .223 brake to get ahold of), correct? I would like to thread my barrel for 1/2x28, but I guess it's almost as difficult to do that as it is to thread a S-.308 in 14x1 LH!
My ultimate goal is to get my rifles threaded in common threads for their caliber (7.62 & .308 - 14x1 LH, .223 - 1/2x28 RH) and cut holes in the FSB's to accommodate a plunger pin so that changing to different brakes or flash hiders to fit the situation is possible. You know, like AK-74 style.
This is pretty much where I got most of my info:
http://preciseinnovationsllc.com/common_gun_thread_sizes.htm
And I guess that they can make custom brakes for custom threads, but it would be nice to have common threads, so that if I saw a brake or flash hider at a gun show, I could just pick it up for cheap and be good to go.
Any help on this topic? Am I off base here, is any of this possible? What's the most possible? Any input would be much appreciated.

Cool, I'm exhilarated (proper spelling?) to know that. It's a good thing too, as I've already got Dinzag's guide installed in my gun. I had some questions about the other guides K-VAR has to offer as far as the 7.62x39 went, but I'm gonna end up goin' with Dinzag all the way on this one. K-Var's overpriced anyway
-
So what's the difference between the Orlites and other mags that the K-VAR guide won't feed, and yours will? Is it that your bullet guide protrudes into the mag and the K-VAR one doesn't?
-
SO are you saying that this guide from K-var won't feed Galil Orlites? Its kind of a moot point, since I've already got a guide installed, but I'm curious.
-
So you can can 10 forein parts, and its legal, but 11 isn't? or is it 9 parts legal, 10 isn't?

Hey you guys, I'm looking for an accomplished AK gunsmith who does quality work. If there's one in your area, maybe you could turn me on to him by giving me his number or contact info. My gunsmith knows jack diddly about AKs and I need some work done that isn't readily do-able with my small selection of tools.
Also, I'm kind of in the dark as far as what caliber muzzle brakes and flash hiders are threaded for what. I know that most standard AK brakes are 14x1 LH and are .30 cal, but what about 15x1, 17x1, 22x1.5 or 24x1? What are their standard caliber? And where can I find a good selection of brakes in different calibers and thread pitches?
If anybody has any information on either of these two subjects, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I understand this, I'm with Dinzag all the way. I've already got one of his guides in my .223. I've got a round trunion x39 though, and was just wondering if anyone had any info whether or not these fit.

Hey y'all, I've been surfin' the net for bullet guide options and was wonderin' if this option would work:

Hey I've been surfin' for bullet guides on the net, and already have one from Dinzag installed on my rifle, but I was wondering, will this work?

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm after, anything that's heap (inexpensive) I bought 2 Orlites from AIM when they were $13 a piece, they were used and function fine. Is there a spot I can get some used ones for cheap?
-
Damn! Those look like they just came out of the press! How'd you do it?
-
Hey guys, I was gong to buy a bunch of new Orlite Galil mags from CDNN, but they're sold out. Does any body know a place that or a person that sells them for a reasonable price? Thanks.
-
I used to have a factory mount on my .308 and it held up wonderfully. I had to adjust it so that it clamped hard enough, but after that it was solid. I don't know the measurement on the rings, but it fit a Tasco Worldclass 3-9x40, if that helps.

YEah, you guys, screw the registration. My state isn't the Communist Republic of California (talk about fascism, they've got an AUSTRIAN foreigner running the show!) and NO ONE is going to take my firearms. I've got to tell you, I've reached a point in my life where "From my cold, dead hands" means just that. If our country sinks that far into fascism, or my own state for that matter, you better believe I'll be leaving in a body bag before I give up my guns. Opinion here, but I don't think many Americans these days get fired up enough about protecting our firearms rights (The Second Ammendment, for Chrissakes!) to say that they'd die for them. I think most Americans are are soft and complacent (sheep) and will do pretty much whatever "authority" tells them. That's what I've experienced, that's what I know, and I feel strongly about it.

I am working on converting my Saiga. Today I modded the mag catch so that it woreks with normal AK mags.
However when I lock in my norinco frum, it fits but it seems the front of the maf is loose, it doesnt hit the stops in the reciever like the others.
I havent added the bullet guide in yet, so we'll see if that helps but has anyone had this happen?
Yeah, man, I got a chinese drum also, but I haven't tested it for fitting properly yet. To be honest, I just picked up my S-7.62 a few days ago, and haven't got around to doing anything to it except clean it. I'll probably futz around with it tomorrow and see about wobble or not.
-
Can you even get factory 30 rounders? And how much are they?
-
It seems this whole "hi-cap for the .223 Saiga" is a personal preference thing. I just installed the feed ramp from Dinzag and have flawless feeding from 2 Orlite Galil mags. It was seriously one of the easier gunsmithing things I've done. It literally only took 15 minutes and I used (dare I say it) a hand drill! I just went slow, and it still didn't take long. And the mags? You barely have to take any plastic off them for them to fit nice and snug. Just like an 1/8 of an inch off either side at the front and it was like they were made for each other.
I personally like the bullet guide better than any other solution, because it seems to be more permanent than the other "fixes." And now that I've got the guide installed, I can buy any number of Orlite mags, or .223 AK mags for that matter, take literally just 2 minutes to shave 'em to fit and I'm golden. No fuss, no muss.
That's peace of mind right there. Thank Dinzag!
-
Yeah, man, that's good to know. I'm glad you picked up a couple different mags to check them out. I ordered Dinzag's bullet guide and 2 Orlites awhile ago, but they're still just sittin' around waiting to be installed. I kind of wanted to go with a less instrusive way of hi-cap in the .223, but it looks like the Orlites are definitely gonna need a feed ramp also. It looks like Dinzag's feed ramp is the way to go. Now if I could just motivate myself to install it...
-
I was kinda wondering too. So you don't need a bullet guide for the Bulgarian ones huh? Just grind them to fit and rock and roll?
-
So I've been surfin' and I found some Bulgarian clear plastic waffle mags. Are these any good? Whats the difference between these and the straight black ones? Will they work without having to install a bullet guide? Thanks.
>308 Finish
in Saiga .308
Posted · Edited by Maniac Jack
Yo fellas,
I just got done painting and baking a .223 and a .308 Saiga. I used Duplicolor High Heat (1200 degrees) matte black, and did what the instructions on the can said to do. It gave the options to either bake at 300 for 2 hours, or at 400 for 1 1/2 hours. I opted for 400 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. The finish where I painted on both guns turned out great - rock solid in fact. The issue I had was that on the .308, all the exposed metal (where the bolt carrier rides, where the safety contacts the receiver etc.) turned rainbow colored, like it got way too hot. On top of it, the finish on the receiver compared to the finish on the bolt carrier and dust cover is now very dull. (I guess the next gun I paint will be at 300 for 2 hours.) I don't really mind much how it looks, I'm mainly worried about the integrity of the finish now. Whether or not it will still bear the test of time.
This was kind of an unpleasant surprise, and I was just wondering if anybody else who's painted and baked has noticed this also. Thanks.
