  1. A mess to you may be a good starter ak for me. I understand where you are coming from with the limited budget. The t6 with the built in pistol grip is 60 bucks though, so my advice (which is worth what you paid for it) would be to leave your Saiga stock for the moment. As funds allow pick up a tapco g2 single hook trigger, and a tapco Ak stock. (I prefer the original fixed stock). Thats about 60 bucks there, then save up for a pistol grip, and the nut an screw to attach it and a retainer plate. This will only cost a little bit more money, and with some sweat you will have much better res
  2. The Tapco is Warsaw lenght. The most obvious difference cosmetically is the groove on the side of the Kvar stock. The Kvar stock is generally considered better made, and the part of the stock that goes into the reciever must be sanded, filed, or Dremeled to fit. The Tapco unit just slides right in and does not offer as snug of a fit as a properly fitted Kvar. The Tapco also lacks the trapdoor in the back plate which is present on the Kvar model to store your cleaning kit. I don't know how the butt plate demensions compair. I personally have the Tapco stock on my rifle, its plenty adequate
  3. I shoot at the Garland public shooting range. I have never seen a Saiga Shotgun there, but I have seen other tactical shotguns. They will not let you shoot shotguns at thier targets. You have to setup cardboard boxes to put your targets on. They usually have some boxes you can use, but to be safe I would bring some of my own. I shoot my Saiga 7.62x39 here. They do not allow fmj ammo. so if you want to shoot your rifle bring some hollow or soft points.
  4. I have also ordered ammo from Wideners before, and was happy with my transaction.
  5. Your right. It really is hard to mess up these rifles beyond the point of fixing.
  6. Its not very thick at all. It should be fairly obvious when you hit pay dirt, there wont be any resistance. Just make sure you punch and line up where you want that hole, you only get one shot to make it right. That said its not too hard. I had issues with mine. My guide was contacting my bolt, and I stripped out my original threads. I had to go one size up on the tap, and reshape my bullet guide a lil and now everything is go. Really its not all that difficult, just use some superglue and test and retest for function. Break cleaner will take the super glue off.
  7. I yeah that patch is for space marines from Warhammer 40k. I have only played one tabletop game but I do have some of the modles. I wandered into a Gamesworkshop store looking for video games a year ago. So yeah, I don't know about the older stuff, or its value. I am a sucker for modles though, I used to build em with my dad all the time. I feel connected with him while I build. Oh and I have chaos space marine modles. They are like the space marines but all evil lookin with skulls and spikes everywhere.
  8. Tapco in my opinion does not deserve alot of the crap that they get. Thier stuff isn't always top of the line, but its usually really good for what you pay. To some people though anything less than the best is just offensive. Tapco provides american made products that would otherwise be out of reach to people with more limited budgets, and I think thats pretty noble.
  9. Ah, I read the answer, and didnt even realize it until I decoded it. 01001001 00100000 01101100 01101111 01110110 01100101 00100000 01101101 01111001 00100000 01010011 01100001 01101001 01100111 01100001
  10. I want one! Though I wouldn't be shooting at messy targets near my computer.
  11. If someone likes shooting from a bench rest all the time like that, more power to em. We should all be able to enjoy our guns any way we like. However if you are trying to (im)prove your marksmanship the bench rest is not how you do that. Its a test of the gun itself like others have said. If you wanna compair your skill with someone else, you should be trying to do things as similarly as possible, ex both shooting prone, standing, kneeling ect. If your prepairing for shtf you should be practicing with your weapon in the manner closest to expected usage. I like to practice standing most, thoug
  12. Im no expert here, but heres my opinion. Folding stocks are cool and all but not really $200 dollars worth of my money cool. As others have said they are most convenient for compact transport, but a fix stocked ak is definetly manageable enough for me.
  13. Haha the cover me line was pretty funny. God Im so glad I've got my russian AK.
  14. A big pot of pinto beans, some bran muffins, espresso, and a big bottle of Jagermeister. I will be damned if I don't go down without raising a stink.
  15. http://www.examiner.com/x-32687-Augusta-Craft-Beer-Examiner~y2010m3d31-MillerCoors-introduces-new-marketing-gimmick-The-Vortex-Bottle I don't drink much these days, but this lil novelty bottle is the perfect excuse to treat myself. Excellent
  16. I agree they need to change the screw they include with the kit. However a 6-32 threaded flat head screw is pretty damn cheap. My mistake was trying to fix it before I did some homework. Your going into your install knowing about this potential issue, so your ahead there.
  17. Thanks for the replies guys, its good to know Im not alone. I did use the super glued nut trick. My hole was just a tiny bit off probbably due to my making too large a mark. I only had to file a hair to fix it. My main issue was the bolt not closing as documented in this thread. Here I decided to try and torque that screw down hard, and I broke my threads. I think I will get a new flat head screw with bigger threads and retap the hole. Either way I know im gonna get this resolved, and I will know better next time. Mags are not expensive, but 15 dollars probbably means more to me than most. I t
  18. I lived in Rockford Illinois for 9 months from 2008 through 2009. I went under pressure of my woman's family(its where shes from)Those 9 months were all I could stand. I am so glad to be back in Texas where I belong. Best of luck to yall up there, kill this shit before it spreads.
  19. I posted on here when I did my pistol grip restoration. That stuff was easy and went off without a hitch. Then the time came to rock and roll with ak mags.Installing the bullet guide has been a nightmare. For reference I bought mine from CSS. I put the bullet guide in,lined it up and marked the hole. then I superglued a nut on the mark to hold my drill bit in place. I managed to drill through the trunion with the supplied bit with no problem. I even managed to tap the hole easily and without incident... but then when I went to put the bullet guide in the hole was a lil bit further back t
  20. Thanks. You and your rifle actually inspired that choice in color. I really think your 7.62 is one of the nicest looking on the site. I dunno why the color does not seem to be anymore popular than it is.
  21. Thanks bud,I do hope I get to do another one day. Though I don't think I will consider this gal complete for awhile yet. I still have to install the bullet guide. I also want to add a muzzle device and a bayo lug one day. Military style guns just seem naked or neutered to me without atleast the capability of mounting a bayo. Im pretty sure I have factory threads under my fsb. I just don't know yet if I do have threads should I just put on a threaded fsb with bayo lug, or put on an akm fsb and gasblock? I also have the tooling issue to deal with when it comes to that as I lack a press or even v
  22. Ok, I took longer than I said I would but heres my update. All photos taken with a nokia 5610 cellphone. Here is what I started with: Bone stock born 3/13/09 with dimples and a fatory recorded group of 126mm First I stripped her down and started on drilling the pins. You can see the drill I was using. I did spin the drill bit on one of the pins with my hand before I got down to business and I noted that the metal seemed pretty soft, so this job was easy. Getting the internals out wasnt much of a problem either, I dont have a garage or any vices so I used this ammo can with a towel draped ov
  23. I will submit some pictures, and do a detailed write up on my restoration within a day or two.(Thanks for reminding me of the proper term Cowtown)As of this after noon the main part is finished. I got the trigger and my new furniture on there. I didnt get quite as many pics as I would have liked, but I had pretty regular interuptions. I also lack most tools, all I had were a cordless drill, a dremel, some screw drivers, claw hammer and drifts. Some vices would have come in handy but I made do. Im very happy with the way the rifle came out. Now I just need to touch up the finish, and
  24. I said I was going to wait, but the urge to convert was eating me up inside. As of now I have stripped the rifle down, drilled out the pins, and gutted the internals. I have started on the rivets on the sporter plate, but somebody moved my dremel stones and I cant find them. I used a sanding drum and killed one rivet with it, got most of another and started on the third. The sander was eating those rivets really nice, but I need a cone so I dont mangle the trigger guard. Im off to pick up the old lady from work and stop by the hardware store. I will update with pics and more details about the e
