  1. I noticed from many of the pictures and videos of the conversion that there's rust under the factory sporterized plate. It seems that the Russian didn't bother to put any finishing under there, and since it's degreased without any sort of protectant, it was bound to rust eventually. I have since painted over that part but contemplating sanding off the paint and using some sort of rust remover and do a proper job to ensure that the gun truly last. Has anyone done something similar? Did you just spray paint over it and forgot all about it or did you go the whole nine yard and sanded off eve
  2. I like to get everyone's opinions on this. What do you feel is the best finishing for a saiga? Obviously, you can always sand off everything and have a gunsmith put on some fancy finishing, but most of us can't afford that. From my research, I've heard of many choices; rustoleum, engine paint enamel, krylon, etc. One of the above has to be better than the others, be it in terms of color uniformity, rust protection, durability, etc.
  3. It's a good thing I only bought one. Thanks for the info, I checked several place online and it seemed to verify what you said.
  4. http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/se...-30rd-30/Detail The magazine is very grey, so according to what you said, I assume it's korean.
  5. I don't know who made it. I bought it from CSS brand new and it came yesterday. When I line up the two plates, one from the factory saiga mag and one from the new ak metal mag, you can tell that the bulge on the new ak mag is slightly higher. I threw in the factory plastic plate and the bolt slide forward smoothly, no catch. It's not a problem now, but if other ak mags are like this, I would have to file down that plate every time I buy a new mag.
  6. Ah sorry I missed your post there. What did you had to do to convert the old disconnector spring to work?
  7. Can you reuse the old spring? Or is it too substantially different? I didn't even know you needed a disconnector spring
  8. I don't know much about the BHO but that seems like a pretty crude way to do the job. I'm sure it's not the BHO because it catches at a very thin edge and scratched a thin line off the paint of that plate. Over time after a few thousand cycles, both the bolt and the plate would probably wear down to the point where it doesn't touch anymore. I'm just concerned about it doing damage to the bolt. If it was the BHO, there would be no reason why it doesn't do that on the original saiga mag. Like I said in my first post, I replaced the metal plate with the plastic plate from the factory saiga ma
  9. I bought a new AK magazine for the saiga. The bullet guide hasn't got here yet but I put it in there to see how it fits. First of all, it's very very tight. I have to put it in dead straight with the edge perfectly aligned and jam it in, or it will not go in. There's not even room for a strand of hair to slide past. That's how tight it is. Is this usually the case with new magazines? I notice that after doing this a few times, the paint on the side of the magazine is completely scratched up. Second, the plate above the magazine spring that push the bullet up, that bolt in the rifle will ca
  10. I made all my orders yesterday. The only authentic parts will be the pistol grip, receiver (dimples) and kvar handguard. It really hurts to pay $180 for a handguard setup, especially the retainer, but at least this serves a purpose and works better than the tapco galil. Then I went with the Romanian wire folding stock since it's cheaper than both the tapco and ace setup, made of real steel and not polymer, never heard a report of it breaking, unlike the other two. Now we'll see if there's a pistol hole under that plate and the bullet feed goes in smoothly.
  11. Gun prices doesn't go down often once it's up. Personally, once I pay for all this, I wouldn't want it to go down, except ammo, of course. It just means that what you own is now worth less. IMO, it isn't the price of guns that's ridiculous. Saiga price could go up to $800-$1000 and it would still be worth the money if nothing cheaper is around. What's ridiculous is the price of these accessories. I didn't realize that the price of metal went up along with guns, but now apparently little things like Russian folding stock are going for $250+. Surplus wire folding stock from some former So
  12. Much thanks for the reply, 1. I'm ordering the kvar pistol grip. Do you know if this comes with the screw? I've search on here and google with no answer. 2. I assumed that I would need a tap wrench in order to tap the trunnion for the bullet guide. I'm not very familiar with tapping. Is there anything else one would need? Cutting oil? I saw some kind of tool that you would need to get a small initial hole in the trunnion so the drill can find traction. 3. The latter sounds much more appealing. How extensive is the drilling for further attachment to the internal adapter block? 4. Once agai
  13. I'm ready to order parts for my conversion. There's some minor questions left that I know for a fact someone has asked before. The guides are pretty vague and doesn't touch on this. Searching for it is just a pain in the ass and I've been searching and reading up on old topics for a whole week now. 1. Do I need to order the pistol grip screw? I do know that the nut isn't included and I will order that. But do I need the screw? 2. Little things like centerpuncher, I don't have at home. Do I need to order that or can I just use something like a metal chopstick? Where can I order a good tap
  14. I've decided I'm not going to make it an AK-103 clone. It cost too much from over-inflated price due to scarcity of parts. Muzzle break is nothing more than riced out bling on a semi-automatic and causes hearing damage. I'll still put on a folding stock though, for portability.
  15. AK-103's don't have triangle folding stocks. The picture above is of an AK-103. Ah, thanks for pointing that out. I was thinking of the Krinkov style stock. If that's the case then, I haven't seen an AK-103 folding sold anywhere. Do you know where I might find one?
