  1. Like zagumennyyilya stated, the suppressor co will never know what weapon their can was attached to. The barrel not be concentric/parallel to the bore doesn't apply to mine as my threads were cut concentric on a lathe, which is why I sent it off to adco as they guarantee it to be right. I wasn't comfortable with any local smiths to do the work nor knew of any with a jig like those who did netpackrats gun. I'll check with a dowel rod also to ensure no hang ups.

  2. Well I got a little more work done. Got the barrel back from ADCO, which turned out great. While I had the barrel out, I went ahead and removed the side scope mount, tig'd up all the extra holes including the bho slot, and welded the original trigger guard to the mag release tower. It was riveted in place, along with re-riveting the forward most hole of the rear trunion which was removed when I took off the scope mount

  3. A lot of times what I see happening on the range is people trying to force the shot. And what I mean by that, during the natural arc of wobble, people usually jerk the trigger at the exact time they have the sights on target right where they want the shot to go. They do this instead of focusing on the basic fundamentals. Sight picture and trigger control are the most important, followed by follow through. If they focus on this those rather than the gun moving around, then they would get combat hits. No one can keep the gun perfectly still, but if they focus on the fundamentals, then that round will be where it needs to be.

  4. Exactly. Invest in a good muzzle brake. Makes a huge difference in recoil management. It won't make you more accurate, but it will speed up you follow up shots. What will make you more accurate is the basic fundamentals. Start with a proper shooting stance. Feet shoulder width apart, squared up on target, with strong side foot slightly back. Weight on the balls of your feet, knees slightly bent. Bent slightly at the waist. You need to make sure you maintain sight picture and trigger control during the arc of wobble. Also remember the natural respiratory pause, that three to four second pause between exhale and inhale where your body is at rest. for combat shooting, trigger control and sight picture is what you can count on. All the others are great to do on the range but not always practical on the battlefield.

  5. I will say this, the Russians idea of a press fit is .02", even up to .025". That included, not only the barrel journal, but also the front sight and gas block. It took quite a bit of force on my 20 ton press to bust them loose. Even the barrel pin. I bent 1/4" plate I milled out to support the trunnion when pressing the barrel pin out.

  6. It's been awhile since I've made any updates. I've since pressed the barrel out, and is on it's way to ADCO to be shortened to 18", crowned, and threaded 5/8x24. They are also going to contour the barrel directly behind the threads for me to reattach my front sight. Using them, they guarantee the threading will be concentric to the bore. And they're reasonably priced. For everything mentioned plus reparkerizing, I'm out $130. I could have found someone local, but I have all the tools, and I don't know any smiths who are knowledgeable about the ak platform.

  7. He's talking about the piece the hammer strikes first before hitting the firing pin. I think its called the striker but I could have the names reversed. The S12 utilizes a 2pc firing pin/striker assembly.

  8. I can't offer it to you for free, but I do have the Saiganov stock that recently came off my S-12. It's in good condition. Purchased the firearm in mid February and started the conversion process in late March. So It hasn't been used much. It's factory original and has the rotating cheek rest. You can find them new for around $99. I'll offer it to you for $70 which includes priority shipping.

Edited: The mark showing on the picture is water. I'll retake photos if necessary.

    His S12 is converted.
  9. Received the sabrewerks KOP system in the mail yesterday and was immediately impressed with the overall fit and finish. The two pieces fit together with no movement whether vertical or horizontal pressure applied. The scope mount is solid and should have no problems maintaining zero. Theres room for some minor improvements that i will touch on later, but overall, im completely satisfied with the purchase decision. Ill link some pictures later

  10. CSS supplies a front mount that clamps to the barrel via 4 bolts which is installed just behind the gas block. The handguard then screws into it. Very solid and does not utilize the gas block pins in any way.

    Norotor,

What front sight are you running? Is it a clamp on ACE?

  11. The Definitive Arms AR mag adapter is the best design to date. I wish they would do something with the trigger guard as I feel it looks a little amatuerish having the original guard just tucked up under the adapter. It would be good if they integrated a trigger guard into the adapter and had it riveted in place.

Rifle looks great. The only thing I would change would be the handguard. For the AR style, CSS has the vented tube that would stop at the gas block and offers a much superior front mount as it no longer uses the gas block pin in any way.

Can you remove the top cover with the MI mount?

I attempted to change the trigger guard on my DA rifle only to find the mag adapter gets in the way of using a guard that is bolted on in front of the trigger. It may be able to be done with some modifications to the trigger guard but I called it quits and put the original one back on.

Yeah. Thats why they should integrate a trigger guard into their design and rivet in place as well. Kinda like the BASTARD by Texas AK

  12. Thanks for the reply. I enzded up going with CSS and their aluminum AR style rail. I felt their system offered the best solution to having a solid mounting point while allowing me to put rails only where needed, lightweight and vented for heat to escape.

  13. The way his ports are situated, it doesnt appear to be enough room to add another port without opening up the gas block even more. Going up just one size, more than likely will not create a whole lot more debris in the gas block, any more than 5 ports at .078 would.

Larger ports allow larger debris to enter the system. I have tried 5 @ .078" and 4 @ .093" on many different S12s. Smaller ports foul the gas block much less until the weapon is allowed to get extremely hot (like 100+ round dump hot). When shot cups/wads are liquifying on the way through the bore, then port sizing does not matter, the debris sprays in. For regular use, smaller ports are superior when reduced fouling during normal use is the goal.

I usually go along with that same line of thought, however, the OP doesnt appear to have enough room to drill a fifth port, and by increasing the 4 ports he already has, I was talking about only going up to a #46 drill bit which would only open up the ports to .081. While larger and probably going to increase the fouling some, It wont be an extravagant amount more than what it currently does.

  14. Next stage, I will be removing the barrel from the receiver, chop to 18", recrown and thread 5/8x24. Also, I will be replacing the rear sight base with the Kalashnikov Optics Platform (K.O.P.) designed for the PSL/RPK. I'll be running the long picatinny rail along with a Burris PEPR mount and a Burris Fullfield E1 4.5-14x42 scope (already aquired).

A Griffin Armament 7.62 Flash Comp, CSS AR stock adapter, and either a MOE or CTR stock with cheek riser will be added.

The third stage will be to weld shape, cut, and weld the factory trigger guard to the mag release tower and rivet it in place. I will probably remove the left side scope rail and weld up any remaining holes. Once all the metal work has been done, I will throw the gun in my media blaster and prep for parkerizing. Thinking of going with a moly resin top coat or just leave it parkerized.

Nice rifle. I'd love to have a 308.

Thanks, but its far from done. It should end up a pretty capable battle rifle when its all said and done.

  15. I dunno, mine felt the same as any other AK factory spring. I seriously doubt they would have a S308 specific spring, just like all the extractors springs are the same, whether it is an S308, a S12, or a Saiga x39, 5.45, or 5.56

  16. Figured Id start a build thread for my S308. Started with a stock, unconverted, 21.8" gun purchased at KVAR. Gun was built in 2009.

First phase consisted of removing the existing trigger and linkage setup along with the plate on the bottom, and replaced with a Texas AK double hook trigger, a surplus safety lever, MD Arms grip, and a CSS handguard. For magazines, so far I've attained a few CsSpec 20rnd magazines. For aesthetics, I removed the sheet metal cover spot welded to the gas tube. I touched up the bare spots with a gloss Rustoleum paint (All I had on hand, but it shouldnt stay for long).

Heres a few pics of it's current state.
