  1. TBH it sounds like customer service was pretty good- I'd be writing a letter to Ryan's superiors by now saying he's a good guy. Anyway, glad you got your fed ammo, I'm sure you'll find a use for the winchester- I'd even use it as single shot (have done before, people often burn through a drum on my gun, say thanks and hand me a box of winchester uni they were using). Doesn't really bother me since they don't know better and they're just doing what they reckon is right, so I just shoot in when their not around, even if it winds up being single shot, still takes clays down anyway.

  2. I'd go with either the slant or the 74 style, both are effective and have done very well over the years.

I believe the slant reduces recoil more (could someone confirm or dispute this so I know for sure?) so may be the way to go if your on a 7.62 or above, whereas the 74 style reduces recoil very well and also hides flash so is preferable IMO unless you really need all the help you can get. The slant is also a good bit shorter and generally cheaper.

edit: also if you intend to mount a bayonette it might be worth making your choice based on that, the front gas block and front sight block are different depending on which bayonette/muzzle brake. With the 74 sytle the bayo attaches to the FSB, with the slant it attaches to the front gas block. Sounds as though you havn't replaced either yet so it's worth telling you that if you want to use the slant and the bayo you will have to replace the front gas block as well, whereas the 74 style brake/bayo requires only a 74 style FSB.

double edit: wow.. this was in the s-12 section, now I feel retarded (thought you were talking 7.62 or 5.45), go with the polychoke, it's great. Not a recoil reducer but adjustable choke is really good. You can reduce recoil on the stock- probably the best option, Mako (AKA FAB) stock's are really easy to install and have a buffer in them. Unfortunately I don't think CSS has them, which sucks because CSS is my favorite place to buy from.

  3. Yeah, I've seen some melted handguards before- I think you'd have to bore it out and then probably still use the heat shield- it's aluminum and could maybe be bent to fit. Maybe you could get one off another handguard and then make it fit since the one that comes with it may be too small- just got a RRA AR handguard from MT predator that has a double heat shield- I bet one of those heatsheilds or something like that could be made to work on the S-12.

  4. Interesting, why is the spring in front of the piston though? Good to have another option, and it's great news as far as any potential ban- the more commonplace these things are the more difficult it will be to tell people the goverments stealing them.

  5. Sorry guys, I got drilled by lightning (or my house did) and internet only just got repaired. Thought I'd give some first thoughts on it (pictures to come later).

It is the loosest install of any handguard I've ever seen. The bottom handguard hardly fits into the receiver, but this seems intentional since once the handguard retainer is in place it is very snug (and as comfortable as you would expect a handguard from hogue to be, which is VERY). The heatshield design seems very good.

They send you two upper handguards (hadn't realized this at first) one with rail and one without. When I rotated mine onto the gas tube they were so loose that if I didn't hold them in place they simply rotated back around and fell off, but once the gas tube was in place the lower handguards do a good job of holding them in where they outa be- there is no side to side movement and a small amount of front to back. Something you will notice is the upper handguards are made of more solid plastic- not the traditional hogue stuff that the pistol grip/lower handguard are made of.

The side rail installation looks pretty solid (havn't done it). There are essentially two rubber plate thingies on either side of the handguard that simply push out (from the inside, must remove heat shield) to reveal holes where you then attach the siderail pieces with screws- looks as though it would be solid, and I think the rubber plate thingies are in there tough enough to hold up to firing if you choose not to install the rails (I didn't install them).

Basically- it's comfortable, good looking, and affordable. I'm happy to say I'd take it over Kvar any day. I DO NOT think the upper will be a solid mount for a red dot or whatever you have in mind. It sits on the gas tube so loosely I just don't see it working out..

Pictures to come later (today hopefully)- range test is a bit difficult atm and will probably come later in the week. I might even throw the upper with the rails on and do a red dot test for kicks but I don't expect it will work out. I'm mainly interested to see if the side plate covers will hold up since there is literally nothing but the friction between them and the handguards securing them, I expect they will.

  6. Sexy on the 74s... But some dude bought all those M16s and then magpul'd them? Wtf?

I wish I was the type of person who could afford to order 10 rifles when I had the urge, all those identical rifles together look sexy.

  7. That is just what I am looking for but not for 140....costs 1/3 of my ak!

get used to it- that's optics for you. If you plan on mounting an optic that will help rather than hinder expect to pay the price of your rifle or more (at least with AK's due to their relatively low price). The only exception is POSP which arn't exactly military grade but not far from it from what I can tell. Beat the heck out of my .308 and it's POSP still holds zero.. Sort of beat it into the corner of my gunsafe, thrown it in the back of my truck, dropped the rifle a couple of times (never landed scope side to the pavement but still), and altogether not handled it with care and the scope is still sitting where I need it. Granted POSPs arn't cheap but compared to optics in the same area of quality they are.

  8. Forgot to mention, after last year the dehydrator fan was full of spores. I scraped them off into a bed in the garden. We have a Big Green Egg that takes natural lump charcoal. So, I have been dumping some of the ashes and charcoal onto the area where the spores went. We'll see if it produces anything or not.

I'm proud of this garden, so here's a photo. Everything is in but the maters. Actually, today we picked spinach which is the first produce of the year (besides chives). Growing conditions here leave a lot to be desired.

Looks good, whats up with all that empty land though? One of the weirder things I've seen in a neighborhood.

  9. I like it, except I'd ditch the fake silencer. Let's be honest, you made an ultra light rifle, and then stuck something unneccesary on it. And it looks like PVC pipe.. not a silencer. Really think you'd be better off without it..

Having said that, I'm looking at pictures, if it looks fantastic to you in person and makes you feel better about your rifle, go for it. Just giving an honest opinion since you posted it in a public forum.

And since I don't think you got it- dogman wasn't worried about you fooling anyone with the fake silencer.. He meant take it off because it looks kind of goofy and he was worried people would see it, realize it was a piece of PVC and wonder what a piece of PVC was doing on the end of your rifle.

Otherwise, nice job on the camo and I hope it's a lot of fun!

  10. Midwest and YHM both make 2 piece quad rails that are made to replace the GI handguards. Both are just over $100.

Midwest also has an awesome 2peice free float rail that you remove the delta ring to atach. It is a bit more than the above units.

You have the right idea, Chinese garbage has no place on an AR, or a siaga for that matter.

I'm actually looking for pretty much standard GI, having a hard time finding it, maybe I'll run with one of the others tho.

  11. Hogue is finally shipping their new forend- has an AK look and if it's anything like the rest of their products will likely be amazing- plus it comes with attachable rails so you can do what you want and then decide to take it off later

edit: as far as what to call it, it's up to you. It's more of an AK-47 then any other rifle available due to the fact that it has THE Izmash reciever- no other imported AK's have that feature, although imported draco pistols come with factory cugir recievers so I imagine they are pretty much as legitamate since both are cold war factories. Personally I call my saigas AKs, it's just easier, but if I'm having a conversation with someone who knows more then AK and M16 I'll mention it's a saiga, but it's a whole lot easier even when I'm shooting with my friends to ask if I should bring the Ak-74 then the saiga 5.45.

  12. I have heard good things about the Rock River AR's, but I have decided to go down the route of building an AR-15 with a mishmash of parts. I just need to get a buffer tube assembly, a butt-stock, and a rear sight to finish my build.

Which manufacturer did you go with for your receivers? Did you go with parts kits or piece-at-a-time?

Yeah, hoping to do it fairly soon before it gets too hot out here (don't shoot as well when the gun is soaked in sweat). I'm planning on using the same scope for both rifles just to take the iron sight factor out of it to test the guns specifically.. I'm sure the AR will win accuracy, but I really don't think it will be significant enough to justify 300$ vs 950$.

Btw, anyone know a good place to get the typical military style handguards (durable is preferable to cheap). I don't like the magpul one the rifle came with.

Yeah, probably not- that's quite a difference. I'm starting to wish I'd just gotten a .223 Saiga and converted the thing...

Huh, thought I'd look around for you, and here you stumped me. I figured standard handguards would be all over the damned place. Quad-rails out the wazoo, but I only found a handful on a couple of sites. CTD had one made by The Mako Group for about $14, and Midway had DPMS, Model 1, and UTG ranging from $15-30. Not that I particularly trust any of those brands. However, I'm sure a ton of guys have swapped out their standard guards for free-float, quad-rail, and other 'tacticool' models, so there's bound to be an abundance of barely used ones for sale out there. Took a quick look through the WTS/WTT on here and didn't see any on the first page.

yeah, I've run into the same issues.. typical google search didn't turn up much (and my go to forum sponsers didn't either!).. Unless I want a 300 dollar quad rail.. Which I dont, my gun don't need 100 attachments on the forearm. Don't want UTG either, maybe for the wrong reason, but I refuse to have an airsoft brand on my rifle if I can avoid it so leapers and UTG is a no go- regardless of how good a product they've been known to produce. My rifle is a rifle, not an airsoft toy.

  13. Slostang- I still have yet to hear anything negative about RRA products. It's almost disconcerting not hearing something bad about my choice. :)

Marrok- Thanks! I've only seen one engraved ejection port door on a gun before and it really dressed it up, at least IMO.

Volkov- I remember reading your post about that, but couldn't find it the other day for the life of me. So the WASR-3 kind of won so far? Where is that post at? I'm interested to see how your next range test goes.

Shandlanos- I've been waiting to run across something like that for a couple years now, but no luck. I've still got the Thompson because I waaaaaay overpaid for it. <_< No matter what, I'm losing my ass- it's just a matter of how bad now. It's a West Hurley M1 semi-auto with the 16" barrel, and I even have the violin case w/drum mag cut-out. I bought it, lightly used (very lightly- still had factory oil throughout the reciever,) from a local shop four years ago for $1,300+tax. I had to drop a little over $200 into parts about a month ago. My thread on that endeavor I had four different people look at it, handle it, make googly-eyes at it, and tell me that my $1,100 asking price was, "More than [they] want to spend right now," last Saturday. Did you ever find the rest of those parts you were needing for yours?

Deadeye- I haven't heard any range reports on them, but I did handle a couple while trying to decide on mine. Not 100% on it, but I believe my local shop wanted $850 for them. They seemed nice for the money, but they were pretty much bone stock with standard handguards and a flat-top receiver. Personally, I'd hang on to the S-12, but then I'm pretty much in love with mine so it's not an unbiased opinion...

And a couple additional things- I also handled an all carbon fiber Bushmaster while I was at the shop. Maybe I've been under a rock, but I'd never seen one before. Even the upper receiver was carbon fiber and it had a little red dot scope on the flat-top for $750. Did not care for that thing at all. Hell, the shop's owner kind of shrugged and said, "Eh, thought I'd try it out." Amazingly, that thing sold about a week after he got it in.

And apparently my link to the RRA page did not work? 2nd Attempt
