  1. LMAO!! Although come to think about it, that would be the only place in my house my girlfriend hasn't snooped around in..........
  2. I was thinking of trying to use a trap door from an SKS or AK stock. I'm thinking that I'd buy a stock to play with if I attempted this project.
  3. I'd like to fill an original Saiga stock and then drill it out and put a trap door in it for cleaning kit. Anyone heard of someone doing that. I've heard of filling a synthetic/hollow stock with foam, but I would assume that insulating foam handle crumble over time as the spring in the stock rubbed against it. I've thought about alumilite as a filler as it can be drilled, filed and is pretty tough. Any thoughts?
  4. I picked up my 5.45 about a month ago - I just got it to the range Friday. It was a blast and with surplus ammo really cheap to shoot. Mine has the grind marks on the front left side of the receiver too. I like the sporting configuration too. I'd like to replace the synthetic stock with wood for a more traditional look and I think the wood butt stock would balance the rifle a little more. I posted a thread earlier about finding magazines. 10 round stock/factory magazines are hard to come by and when you do, they usually run about $25. Since I plan on leaving my 5.45 in the factory co
  5. I once put some Hoppes cleaner down the firing pin on the bolt of my SKS. I kept working it and junk keep oozing out. When I went back to the bolt later, the firing pin was stuck and I had to take the bolt apart to clean it. I had a thick layer of brown gunk that nearly glued the pin in place. I dumped the Hoppes down the firing pin hole in the bolt to avoid possible slam fires. If I would have put the bolt back in, I would have likely had them. I'd be careful about putting solvent/cleaners down the firing pin hole in the bolt. Periodically it's a good idea to disassemble/strip the
  6. I've ordered a 1080 round tin from Sportsman's Guide. The total was $159. That price was with the buyer's club membership and a $10 off (orders over $99) coupon.
  7. It happened again today. I went to another large southern Illinois sporting goods store and got the same blind look regarding 5.45x39. I tried Cabela's in northwest St. Louis Sunday-they didn't have it. So........looks like it's off to Sportsman's Guide. The gun came in this week and I have absolutely no ammo for it - so borrowing a statement I heard as a kid from a National Guardsman who was teaching me firearms safety and showing me a M-16, "a rifle with no ammo is an expensive club."
  8. I didn't find any Saiga 5.45x39 mags on any of the commercial sites. However thanks to this site, I picked one up from a member who saw this thread.
  9. I took the plunge - I ordered a 5.45 from Centerfiresystems.com yesterday. Now I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve!
  10. In the last couple of months, I've had two gun shop owners reply "what's that?" when I ask about 5.45x39 ammo and rifles. This morning I was in a shop and when the owner asked "what's that" in response to my question about 5.45 ammo I told him it's the AK-74 round. He replied, "oh, the little one," and said "I"m sure I can order it." Last month I was in a southern Illinois gun shop and was told "never heard of it." Is 5.45 that new and rare? Or am I just happening to run in to ol' guys who haven't kept up with the times? I don't expect to find 5.45 ammo at Wal-mart, but I'd hope to fin
  11. Thanks. They had magazines for other Saigas, but not the 5.45.
  12. I plan on buying a 5.45 Saiga before the end of the month. I don't plan on converting it any time soon (that may change)and will leave it in the "sporting" configuration. I've looked on the internet and I have not found any Saiga 10 round or 5 rounds magazines for sale in this caliber. Any sites out there that have them?
