  1. I would go with the Circle 10's, but I prefer the 20 round capacity and profile. Just my preference. But with the bullet guide, it is nice to know I can use other hi-cap mags. TG
  2. Thanks for the replies guys. Roger Roger, thanks for the great picture reference too. That really helps out a lot! TG
  3. Hey all, I tried the search function to try to find a definitive answer and came out with an assumption. So here goes... If I convert the Saiga .223 to an AK configuration (with bullet guide), can I use Surefire magazines? Or is there something else I need to do to the rifle? Will I need to modify the magazines at all either? Thanks. TG
  4. We've just been trolled. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoPmH3gGkaU It's like the video was tailor made to be a reply to dang near every "point" de9mm was attempting to make! TG
  5. "There seem to be some pretty rude responses from people who won't take 5 minutes to objectively consider whether or not their opinions are informed." Said the pot to the kettle... Numbers and data go a long way, no doubt. But, so does a bunch of dead animals that have fallen to these "inferior" rifles and bullets... "If you can't handle the recoil, get out of the woods. Don't take your 5 year old on an African safari with a .22 LR because an elephant gun kicks too hard for the little fellow." Umm...really? The kid enjoys a sport that we all love, why take him away from it beca
  6. De9mm, Before I address some of your criticisms of certain platforms and calibers...The OP isn't looking for a bolt gun, as he clearly stated since his son is recoil sensitive. Hence the reason for the post, either an AR upper, an AK, M1 carbine or .357 lever action. With that said, the 7.62x39 is an adequate round to the ranges the OP is looking at, especially when you consider that the deer in Alabama (and most of the south) are much smaller than their northern counterparts. Check out these links to a guy that hunts deer with an AK74 in Georgia and seems to do just fine with it.
  7. I've got an AR in 7.62x39 and in 6.8, as well as a 7.62x39 Saiga. The x39 AR has a touch rougher recoil than the Saiga, by that I mean the Saiga has a smoother absorption of the recoil than the AR does. But as far as accuracy goes, I can shoot sub-MOA with my x39 AR and the Hornady SST rounds. I use the AR-stoner 5 rounders and they are flawless, kind of a pain to actually load 5 rounds, but flawless anyhow. And I have used the ASC 30 rounders and done a few mag dumps with one fail to extract. I took my AR out hunting for Maine deer this year and got stumped, but for 125yds and less (w
  8. So, apparently the weld penetrated the trunnion a tad because I couldn't get the drill to well, drill. So I emailed Atlantic and they gave my information to the conversion company who called me the next day. Turns out their welder had some temperature issues, which accounts for the crappy weld, and a few rifles squeaked out before they caught the issue. Long story short, FedEx will come and pick it up, Atlantic will pay for the shipping and I should have my rifle back next week at no cost to me. TG
  9. I got the BG kit already on the way from CSS. I will definitely make it a DIY. Slow and steady with y'alls advice and the video from CSS on how to do it should make it simple enough. Once I saw the trunnion after the weld broke, I figured it was a crappy weld job. I have to dremel the rough stuff outta there to smooth it out before I drill and tap. Thanks for the tip ChileRelleno. TG
  10. Hey everyone, I went to the range to pop my 7.62x39 Saiga's cherry the other day, (love it by the way). I got home to break it down and noticed the bullet guide went MIA between the range and my place. I checked the rifle bag it was in, and nothing there, so it must've squirted out on the range somewhere... I bought it from Atlantic already converted (no it isn't the Red Jacket one). When I first got it, I inspected the rifle and it all looked well done, until I looked at the bullet guide. It seemed to me that it was just some clear epoxy squirted into the hole in the guide. Maybe i
  11. Looks like a factory handguard that someone did a DIY mod to. TG
  12. Good point, I am curious about this as well. Hopefully someone is in the know. TG
  13. AR-Stoner are C-Products mags. I have some 7.62x39 5-rounder AR-Stoner and the follower is labeled with a "CP". I have some of the 30 round ASC mags too (guys who bought up CP equipment and make the exact same thing as CP did). They work very well and aren't terribly expensive. So if nobody hooks you up here, you can check them out. TG
  14. Thanks guys. I will check out your suggestions and see what works out! TG
  15. Hey all, I have seen quite a few folks with rails on the bottom of the factory Saiga handguards and I was just wondering what company the rails are from or any other information about doing this. Thanks for help in advance! TG
  16. Is your phantom flash hider the extended one or the regular length one? TG
  17. Thanks again Z. I will keep researching and see what will work out best for me. I have plenty of time to research as my purchase was pushed back a couple years by the little woman. My next gun will be a graduation present according to her. (As long as I don't pay for it, I am fine with that!) In the meantime, I will search and figure out what I want to do. TG
  18. Thanks Z. I have been reading a little bit and it seems that I can use a tubing/pipe cutter to cut the sleeve off the barrel infront of the FSB, and some barrels are threaded under the sleeve. Once I do that, if my barrel isn't threaded, I can have it threaded to accept a brake. I may go that route since I don't trust myself with aligning a new FSB with the rear sights. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/48234-i-got-factory-threaded-barrel-on-my-saiga-762/ TG
  19. Z, thanks for the thorough reply. So, I would probably be best in getting a Combloc FSB threaded for the 24x1.5 and getting the combloc brake for the rifle as well? Is it a fairly simply process to take off the original FSB/sleeve and replace it with the combloc FSB/brake combo? I have only built ARs up to this point, but I am not opposed to a little work with the AK if it helps me learn them well. It seems, just from looking at pictures that the FSB is pinned to the barrel sort of like an AR, am I wrong in that assumption? Thanks again for the help! TG
  20. Thanks Z. But would I be able to thread the sporter sleeve to accept this...(or something just like it)? http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-168/TAPCO-AK74-BRAKE-SAIGA/Detail TG
  21. Hi all, My first post here, thanks for the information so far. I really like this forum. Anyhoo, I am planning on getting myself a 5.45 Saiga and was wondering if it is possible to thread the factory barrel for a brake, or is that just a sleeve of sorts that needs to come off in order to thread the barrel? Or will I need to get a new FSB/threaded barrel piece? Thanks guys. TG
