  1. Will a slide fire/bump fire stock work on a basic (not converted) Saiga 308-1? If so, can anyone recommend a good one?
  2. I consider myself a "good rifleman". The Army taught me to take off the sling or tape it down on the weapon since a loose sling makes a lot of noise... not a good thing to warn the bad guys you are in the vicinity. In twenty+ years in the Army I was never taught to use the sling for anything but "sling arms!". I have seen TV SWAT guys use the sling for some imagined purpose, wrapping it around like an ace bandage. Again, doesn't seem to be a good idea to tie yourself up when a bad guy might come out of the shadows and you're into a hand-to-hand situation. Well, to each his own. I remain... "a
  3. I'm always amused by the "what's the best gun/caliber for SHTF?" question and the resulting shotgun, rifle, 308, 7.62x39, 223, etc discussions that follow. Its kind of like asking "what's the best utensil for dinner?" with hardcore promoters of spoons fighting it out with knife afficionados and fork lovers. Its really not that simple. I don't believe that any one weapon provides total defense, "all your eggs in one basket" reliability, or appropriate steel on target effectiveness for all contingencies any more than I believe any one utensil can meet all your needs for consuming soup, slicing u

No simple answer here. Brown Bear and Silver Bear is cheap, but I would never use it. It leaves lots of residue so it fouls your weapon, is corrosive so it doesn't store well, and is Berdan primed so can't be reloaded. Its safety record is such that many ranges don't allow you to use it. I wouldn't go near it. (In addition to my Saiga 308, I have an M1A and simply won't risk damaging it with shoddily made ammo.) I could be wrong about Prvi Partizan, but I wouldn't trust that either, despite all the advertising hype that its quality stuff. I like Winchester, but the "Q" in Q3130 Winchester desi
  6. Brilliant minds think alike. I have a 930 SPX and love it. I started with a "loaded" M1A fairly recently and consider it a surgical instrument with long range capabilities, so I keep a scope and bipod on it. I then got a SOCOM 16 for a lighter, more maneuverable version of the same for shorter range purposes in more cluttered environments. It also can serve as a "hanger queen" source of common M1A spare parts if required. I then got a Saiga 308 (16") as a backup. I am more than pleased with its performance. But an M1A it ain't. The renowned reliability it shares with its AK-47 lineage is due i
  7. Wow. I was a plain vanilla grunt and never had anyone address the subject of stabilizing anything with the sling. In fact, we either removed or taped down the sling... it makes a LOT of noise banging around and noise can be hazardous to your health. A three point sling with a CCO in MOUT/MOBUA environments can decrease reaction time (a GOOD thing) but doesn't address accuracy per se. I've seen all those Hollywood SWAT guys wrap the sling in various ways, but I never saw anyone in Desert Storm or OIF have the time (or the desire) to do such a thing.
  8. I'm a new gun owner, but an old Soldier. I was raised in NYC so I didn't learn about guns as a kid, never went out varmint shooting, and have never been hunting. I wasn't any Special Forces Rambo, but spent a long time as a grunt from practicing in Europe and Panama to more realistic exercises in Iraq. I live in the burbs, but if SHTF, I can be in some pretty isolated boonies in less than two hours. With that in mind, I have decided on the following "doomsday" arsenal: - "Loaded" M1A - The Army says the 7.62x51 round has a maximum effrective range of 1100 meters. That is soley because tha
  9. Ok guys, you've piqued my interest. I just bought a new Saiga 16 chambered in 308. I have a "loaded" M1A for long range precision shooting with all the bells and whistles (bipod, rail, scope, etc.). I bought the Saiga as a backup and more convenient carry for walking around with. I never really thought of scoping the Saiga but your thoughts are making me rethink that. I really know little about the range and accuracy I can expect. My only experience with an AK-like rifle was in Iraq where tools and maintenance were slipshod and the weapons were often from third world sources and poorly made. I
