Saiga 7.62 (SGL21) Accuracy - Range Report
Killshot44 replied to BrutalGardener's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
I can eek out 2" 3-shot groups at 100 using Wolf black and a 4X scope. 16" barrel. Better ammo and 3 minutes between shots would close it up some but let's not kid ourselves.....these aren't MOA guns by design. Don't hate on me for the scope, I'm old! -
Welcome to the world of 7.62x39............. Your AK will eat anything. The only stuff I'd not use is Brown&Silver Bear. But that's just me. Good stuff for hunting is the Hornady Vmax 118Gr or the Wolf Black Box 154Gr, depending on the game's size/weight. For good and accurate plinking or range work, seek out Golden Tiger. (if you're rich, Winchester ) For a scope rail, you cannot do any better than the TWS rail. Check out SolarTactical for one. Lets you put the scope back over the receiver. It connects in front by using the rear-sight base (you remove the rear sight) an

I have a 16" and get 1.95" three-shot groups at 100 yards. That being said, I would bet that side-by-side, a 20" would get tighter groups than 16"...

Don't know where this rumor got started but I've found no difference in prices. Here in Cali we're limited to 10rd mags. You can get Izhmash-made mags for as little as $10 online. As for accuracy, I've gotten 1.5" three-shot groups at 100yds using crap Wolf ammo. That's better than what the Russian boys at the factory got while testing it.......
-
Quig is talking about a barrel that came already threaded by the factory. Many of the 2009 7.62s have been found to have threads under a metal shroud. If you have a factory threaded barrel, do NOT cut flush with the FSB......
-
Well, I don't think the Wolf Black box is that bad. With an optic with some magnification, one can get decent groups at 100yds. I want to try the Golden Tiger as this has been said/rumored elsewhere. I can say that the Fiocchi 123gr FMJ is more precise. That is, it gets tighter groups. At 100 and 50. I'm going to get the drop figured out for 200yds this month - should need about 5.23" of compensation...21 clicks. I, too, would like some reviews of the Cor-Bon or the lead-free in our caliber.

I got factory threaded barrel on my Saiga 7.62

Keep us informed..... I can't tell from inspection of the barrel if I've got threads. My 7.62 was built in March 2009 and it does dent cases. We'll see if the handguard indents are there tomorrow. How deep do you cut into the sleeve? 2mm? 4mm? Demel or saw blade? -
Just wanted to chime in here: First and foremost, you won't find any cheap scopes that will hold Zero on a 7.62x39. They simply cannot hold up to the shock of recoil. If you aren't willing to spend at least $200 on a new scope, save your money for a while....nearly everyone getting into shooting makes this mistake of buying cheap glass.... Secondly, going cheap on a mount will just make your problems worse. Forget about dust-cover mounts. Forget about Ultimaks if you do rapid fire,(you might put your $$$ optic on a hot gas-tube, but I wouldn't) Forget about side-mounts from US companies. M

I got factory threaded barrel on my Saiga 7.62
Killshot44 replied to etur's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
So tell us: How did you remove the sleeve? What tools did you use? I've thought that there had to be thread under there. I also have a 5/09 manufacture date. -
Well, for one thing, Dust Cover Mounts and the sight-mount on the Mosin aren't going to be stable enough to hold Zero. They cannot withstand the recoil. One shot may be low, the next way left. The other possible problem is that these scopes lack the ability to do much windage adjustment. Even the best only allow for 50 inches of adjstment at 100yds. When it comes to optics, you truly get what you pay for. Going cheap is just throwing away your money.
-
Do that. What you have will never hold Zero with the recoil of a 7.62 rifle. Scope mounts on the dust cover of an AK will not remain solid while shooting. I'm not going to comment on the scope but to say save up some $ for a while.
-
For the best groupings, try Fiocchi or Cor-Bon. It isn't cheap - but it beats any Russian loads that aren't "Lup"s. Very good hunting rounds as well. FMJ w/excellent brass and box primers. Can even get heavier loads than 124gr.

CA bullet button for those who don't want to move trigger
Killshot44 replied to ibisko's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Thanks, man. No matter what else, using any magazine with a capacity greater than ten will get you arrested in California. (and no not LEO or rimfires etc) It sucks, but that's the law right now. -
CA bullet button for those who don't want to move trigger
Killshot44 replied to ibisko's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Yup, In California no centerfire, semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine (and that mag can only hold ten rounds, that is the absolute legal maximum for rifles and handguns-LEO/Activeduty excepted) can have any of the California "Evil Features" items. In order to have any of the "Evil Features", citizens have taken to installing magazine locks/bullet-buttons in order to reach the legal status of "Non-Detachable", mainly that the mag can't be dropped without a tool. With a non-detachable magazine, you can go nuts on the tactical stuff. (pistol-grips, bipods, muzzle brakes) ( -
Just paid $375 for mine in Nor Cal. 7.62, 16" and unconverted. Don't know where you live - you can PM if interested in hooking up with the FFL Dealer.
