  1. Winchester pulled the Black Talon before it could be banned. There were still places like SF that did ban the BT. Winchester just changed the packaging, the name, and removed the Lubalox coating from them. You can still buy them. They're Called Ranger SXTs We've spent all this time making bullets that maintain their mass under balistic conditions so as to penetrate further and be more effective. This RIP bullet seems to be the antithesis of that concept.
  2. I don't see them offered, but I would hope that they would have some they could sell separately. You can never really tell with Kalinka. Found a little blurb about it on a blog: http://ak47talk.blogspot.com/2010/08/kalinka-introduces-version-3-of-tim.html And the AK Files thread about it: http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72541
  3. When I saw this topic, I went looking for links of places that sold the Tim Heffron low mount that I own. It's really just a BP-02 mount modified to have a 30mm ring instead of a centered rail, but it is great for the 60 bucks I paid for it. Instead, I'm finding that Kalinka has moved away from this design and started putting out what places like Primary Arms is calling their Version 3 or 3.1 mount. Really, this is just like a PK-23 mount with heavy 30mm rings. With the new name for it they also increased the price to $99. Can't say I'm overly thrilled with that price point, but it i
  4. There have been rumors of an S-12 ban for a long time. It's been three or four months without any change in policy, but people have been speculating and gouging. There was a lot of talk of it back during the last shot show. The ban talk is not totally without basis, but no action is really being taken on this. http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/012611-study-on-importality-of-certain-shotguns.pdf
  5. I have to wonder if this was just someone trolling for suckers, and just ended up buying his own rifle.
  6. Thanks Havok. That's actually a pretty good price. Do you have one? And do you happen to know which of the Aimpoints it will work with? Also, it appears that it _might_ be possible to remove the dust cover while leaving it mounted. That would be absolutely ideal. (With a lot of side mounts, one can rotate the dust cover rightward and pull it off, even with very little vertical clearance). I have one and I like it so far. I Red Loctited the screws holding the scope ring to the frame of the mount, and I haven't run into any problems with it holding zero. I do wish that they had welde
  7. Did you recently buy the BP-02? I am not having any luck finding one in stock. Kalinka carries the BP-02 and has them in stock. Of the two types of them, you want the BP-02 Low Profile Mount. They are pretty much the lowest railed side mount out there. Some people don't like Kalinka because they can be slow, especially on stuff they have listed as on reorder. However, I just ordered a mount from them a month ago and got my order in about six days. The BP-02 runs about $58 bucks from them. I think their prices and service were a little better back when Freedom Optics was still
  8. The disconnector spring that comes in the stock Saiga can be used in the conversion. To my knowledge, most Tapco triggers don't come with a disconnector spring, but I went with one because they are fairly good quality and don't cost an arm and a leg. I just dropped the Saiga spring in my FCG, and I was good to go.
  9. I just picked up one of these myself, while my friend picked up one of their microdots for one of his builds. These are turning out to be excellent sights for the money, and their shipping is incredibly fast. I got a shipping notification only a couple hours after ordering. They also sell this mount that fits 30mm tubes. I can co-witness my irons in the bottom of the sight picture. I'm going to go out and see if I can put it through it's paces soon.
  10. I didn't have a problem with drilling the hole for the mag catch pin. I used a good drill bit and a drill press. I placed a piece of sacrificial wood inside the catch area to keep the sides from deforming or allowing the drill bit to wander and giving me holes that are out of alignment. In addition, we used a little bit of cutting oil and took everything slow and easy without putting too much pressure on the piece. We just let the bit cut, and didn't try to force it through the metal. The part I had difficulty with was installing the catch lever and spring. I used a slave-pin to hold
  11. The BP-02 is about the lowest and best side mounted rail I have seen. They are made in Belarus and are extremely sturdy mounts. You can do a lot worse than them. Some people here have had difficulties with Kalinka in the past, but I just had an order filled by them in just about five days.
  12. I'd like to get one of your AK-74 bolts. PM sent.
  13. Basically, the benefit is cheap and plentiful surplus magazines. Yes, you can buy high capacity Saiga mags now, but they are still a bit pricy. For the price of a Saiga mag, you can buy 3 steel surplus mags, and if you're the type to want a lot of durable magazines that is pretty attractive.
  14. There are a couple places I like to check that keep track of current ammo deals. Gun-Deals AmmoEngine I like shooting Brown Bear and Silver Bear. There's cheaper surplus, but the difference in price is only a couple cents a round, and at the amount I shoot right now the difference in cost isn't great enough to make me change. I know that Barnaul makes quality ammunition that shoots well and I don't have to worry about corrosive salts or excessive carbon. The last time I shot some Wolf black box was some of their pistol ammo. I had sparks and smoke everywhere. Second dirtiest ammo I'
  15. Full size Russian factory mags. Not easy to get since there are some restrictions on exporting Russian high-capacity magazines for civilian use if I recall. I didn't realize that rusmilitary would ship them to the US.
