  1. +1 for what mulletman said. Rimless cartridges headspace on the shoulder or case mouth, not very practical for a shotshell and would not allow you to use multiple shell sizes in one chamber (i.e., 2", 2-3/4" and 3" in a 3" chamber). It's been working well for a couple hundred years and there is no practical or economical advantage to changing it.
  2. I bought an Ishipore .308 from AIM Surplus for $150 year before last. It's a good shooter, but it took me a couple of hours to get all the cosmoline out of the stock to metal areas. I got a couple of extra mags from Sportsman's Guide that work fine.
  3. I really like the mini-14, but was less than thrilled with the OEM accuracy. I bought a used one that I thought I would shoot as an Appleseed liberty training rifle and keep as a SHTF tool, but couldn't get it to reliably group better than 5 or 6 MOA. I bit the bullet and sent it off to Accuracy Systems in Colorado for a trigger job and harmonic balancer. It shoots like a house afire now, but at the investment of $500 for accurizing. Note, if your mini groups like your AR, you've either got an exceptional mini or a mediocre AR, I hope it's the first case.
  4. I have a nice Eddystone. Bought it used for pretty cheap metal and bore were great, stock had been texture-painted in "winter camo" white and black. Good shooter. Beware of bad bores (mostly throats and muzzles - they come from an era of corrosive primers). They were replaced by the Springfield 1903 partially because the Enfield did not have any windage adjustment on the sights (other than drifting) which makes "Kentucky windage" necessary in the field. In 30.06, the internal magazine holds six rounds since the gun was originally built for the rimmed .303 British cartridge. Can't seem to u
  5. As a ship's diver, I had the opportunity and pleasure to meet and hang out with a group of SEALS in Norfolk in the late 70's. i got along very well with them because I didn't treat them differently and had the wisdom to know that when conversations turned in certain directions it was time for me to go get another round or feed the jukebox. One axiom that I quickly learned from my experience - whenever someone identifies himself to you as a SEAL without a prolonged period of interaction - chances are that he is NOT.
  6. why didn't you just register it as a dd? I wasn't too savvy on the Class III registration process at the time - wish I had.
  7. I had a USAS12, which was an excellent 12 guage AR clone. Paid $1500 for it,then BATF reclassified it along with the Streetsweeper and Stryker 12 as "destructive devices" and I had to either 1} return it to the manufacturer (for no compensation), 2} surrendcer it to the BATF (for no compensation) 3] or transfer it to a Class III.I wound up selling it to local Class III for $250. I'm still red-assed about it. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=usas+12&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CDkQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FDaewoo_Precision_Industries_USAS-12&am
  8. Started it as a separate thread before seeing this, but a BIG +1 for AZG on our recent transaction. Quick turnaround, great price and shipping paid - a very satisfactory deal and a true gentleman.
  9. Big +1 for AZG. Just purchased the .410 slugs from him, great price and nearly instant turnaround with shipping paid.
  10. BS Boys. I think it's a "satire" site like the "Daily Onion." I'm no fan of Jessie, but look at the "Daily Globe" type headlines in the links at the bottom.
  11. I've seen "tanker" Garands in .308. I've also seen full sized .308 conversions, but all of them still were top-stuffed with the enblocs. I also recall seeing ads decades ago for a chamber insert that converted a Garand to .308 but I doubt that worked out so well and I have never seen one since. I have a National Match Garand and three M1As. I wouldn't ever "butcher" a Garand into an M1A clone, because there are M1As readily available and the Garands are getting getting harder to find and need to be preserved.
  12. The M-14 was an evolution of the Garand and they are nearly identical in gas systems as a result. The M-14 was a change to magazine fed and caliber as you say. There are several versions of Garand .308 conversions out there, but are mostly rebarrels and sill use the top loaded enbloc clips. I've never heard of a Garand modified for mag feed AND .308. Sounds interesting, but be aware you may get hate mail from Garand "purists."
  13. I saw a Kel-Tec video on the PMR-30 and they were adament about loading the mag with the rims overlapping forward only (rim AHEAD of the rim on the round below) to prevent failures to feed, if you aren't doing that it may solve some of your feed issues.
  14. Here it is! The Zombie Proof House! Concrete closing walls, drawbridge, the works! http://realestate.msn.com/blogs/listedblogpost.aspx?post=f5453592-79d3-419e-a388-471a1f9f4f37&GT1=35009
  15. I'm shooting my second Appleseed May 21-22 here in Blackfoot, ID and wil be accepting the instructor in training orange hat. We will be shooting known distance as well as 25m and I shot my M1A Scout Squad at my first AS. I plan to shoot my NM Garand at this one, even at 25m. To find an event close to you, do the state search here: http://www.appleseedinfo.org/as_schedule2.php LEARN TODAY - TEACH TOMORROW.
  16. Of the thousands of truly stupid vids on YouTube, that one has to be top ten! Look closely at left side - first shot is a clean miss at 9 O'clock (at least 3" left of edge of pan). Then a "clip" at about 8:30 just on the edge of the pan followed by another left edge hit within 1" of the first hit that tips the pan over off the foam backing. Shooting way left, seems very close and a nice wet cigarette hack before starting to shoot/miss.
  17. Geothermal works fine for Iceland - the whole country is the size of Yellowstone and sitting on top of it. Geothermal is nice, but it is highly corrosive, releases hydrogen sulfide, requires wires to get the power transmitted away from tne source (what about the trees and the owls?) and how many miles range do you get driving on a tankful of steam? One of the big fights over solar and wind right now is high-tension transmission lines (the lack of and resistance to the upsizing or new installation of them). West Texas is full of windmills right now that are not wired to any electrical distribu
  18. BEWARE! I bought a used Bulgarian 74 brake and tried to put in on a 7.62. I was assured by the seller that the brake had sufficient clearance for a 7.62 round. When I received the brake, I did confirm that a 7.62 round could be inserted into the tightest clearance of the brake with room to spare. However, the first time I shot the gun on the range, several rounds mysteriously "disappeared" at 100 yards - no print on the paper and I was really in a WTF moment until I fired another round and saw dust kick up on another berm at 120 yards and 50 YARDS OFF TO THE RIGHT! I immediately unscrewed
  19. Thanks, Mullet! I emailed those numbers and information to my dealer.
  20. Don't get too excited, Boys. I've been looking for one of these and they don't appear to exist anywhere - including the Savage website. My gun dealers have been calling all over and no one has heard of this caliber option for the Savage 25. I think there was some miscommunication - I've done some surfing on the 'net and I can't seem to find the 5.45x39 as a caliber option for the Model 25 Walking Varminter anywhere: http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/25WV
  21. No worries, bullets are lacquered into the case mouths and primers are sealed into the caes - should last longer than you will ever want to wait.
  22. I just got the Natchez Spring 2011 catalog in the mail yesterday, and they list the Hornady Steel Match in 50 round boxes. 9mm 125g HAP - $18.29, .40S&W 180g HAP - $23.49, .45 Auto 200g HAP - $24.99, .223 53g HP - $16.99, .223 75g BTHP - $19.79, .30 carbine 110g FMJ - $27.69, .308 155g BTHP - $38.29 I'm not that keen on the pistol calibers, but I'd sure like to try out some of the .308 and both flavors of .223 - the prices are certainly right if the ammo is accurate and clean.
  23. Sweet! I bought a Remington "mini-mauser" in 7.62x39 and I'd love to have that bottom black one in 5.45x39!
