    Hello:

I wanted to pass an idea for a rifle project by you guys to see if it sounds ok or not.

I have a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06 with a black nylon stock. I don't need it anymore ever since I inherited a beautiful Weatherby Mk.V Deluxe from an uncle in .30-06 too with a nice Burris scope. So ... I have an extra 700 long action. Hmmm ...

I was thinking it'd be fun to take my Remington apart by a gunsmith for a project. I'd take the thin factory barrel off (that gets hot) and put a Shilen heavy varmint or bull barrel onto the action. I'm referring to their #7 or #8 contours. Replace the trigger with a Timney trigger. Of course, I'd also get a better scope, base, and rings. At the least, something like an SWFA SS scope. Since it's an ADL, I'm fine with the factory bottom metal (correct term?). However, if there's a way to convert to a box magazine, I'm open to any suggestions as to how to do that. I'm not a Brownell's expert.

Anyway ... I'd put it all into an Boyd's Pro Varmint or Thumbhole stock and get it bedded. I don't think any pillaring would be needed. I think either one can accept a bull barrel with some widening of the stock's channel.

I'm not trying to make a competition rifle since it's a .30-06 - not a .308 or 6.5 Creedmore. I assume a bedding job and new trigger would be all I need to worry about. Not sure what kind of crown to get though. Perhaps an 11-degree crown is the simplest. I'll be going ahead and having a complete chambered barrel made.

I just wanted to check with you guys and see if I'm on the right track for making a souped-up .30-06 bolt rifle for the fun of it. Maybe I'll blueprint the action too just for the heck of it.

    Thanks.

if it is not going to be a competition rifle what is the point?

Just buy a used rifle that has what you want or sell or trade up to what you want. There is  a lot of joy working on guns but in the end you should expect a better  shooting gun for the money

  2. Its a Kel-Tec

Fluff and buff it and do the mag insides  also.

I have shot them but felt  like a kiddy gun. they just need some pre shoot care and you will never have problems with it again.

I remember the keyholing they had with the first ones but they fixed the barrels.

go to their web blog lots of help there

    have fun

Let's say I did, Jugs. Which would you recommend?

I want to be able to carry my Judge comfortably and without any sag or play in the material of the Belt, as a benchmark.

    Which would you go for?

    I use the light

I have also had my Blackhawk reinforced ccw  belts for years but They do not sell them any more.

Look for a thick stiff belt with a rounded buckle or one with stainless built into the belt

    are you ccwing the judge

Florida gun shows suck. They used to be ok. I no longer bother. It seems to be a collection of greasy sleezebag dealers who think no one on the other side of the table knows anything, spreading their misinformations, of course.

They stink on Ice . You pay to get in the door which takes away from saving money, you used to be able to deal and you could get some good army boots for a steal.

    Never go anymore as well

  5. So if you hate the NRA. then who has the most clout to protect our gun rights?

As a voting NRA member, I can, and do, vote out liberal moles that have weaseled in the board of directors.

I do not hate the NRA its that they have evolved to something else.

THERE SAFTY PROGRAMS ARE SECOND TO NONE!

Tons of new shooters do it safely because of what they have developed.

I am still a member and will stay one for this reason

  6. At 80 it will be a long heal for her.

    Make sure she eats

Make sure she does her therapy .

Be with her more than you think you need to be as personal jobs  are not as important as your mom.

Bring grand kids, baby's, dogs, neighbors, foods, pictures and read to her on a regular basis.

What ever faith she is, have them visit her all the time as many fail to visit the sick. Insist on it with them.

Her will to live and move on is the most important thing.

Give me her first name and I will pray for her as I already have.

Fight for and with her, hug hold and kiss her all the time, God bless

Remember a lot of her recovery  is emotional.

  7. I hate flying for a lot of reasons, if I have to go out of state I choose to drive.

With that said I chose  to fly up and see my 94 year old mother who has been worried  about my health.

It has been 10 years since I have had to fly and as always I have issues getting through screening.

The main reason is they find metal in both legs and it is unusual. Pre check approved does not matter the shoes came off , hands are swiped ,both leg braces wiped and tested and a lot of questions.

This is good, as they are doing a great job and I told them that.

But my wife got caught smuggling rhubarb in her carry on and had to wait longer than I did.

They thought they had something but when they found the rhubarb they were puzzled and I think disappointed.

After they let her go the wife asked me what I was laughing about.

I told here I never dreamed I would be traveling  with a known rhubarb trafficker

  8. Bedding is a pain and with that said shoot the gun for a while to see if there is a problem.

Midway has a great video bedding a wooden stock. When it comes to poly and fiber glass stocks It may be a waste of time . Non wood stocks flex a whole lot and need more attention.

Always make sure the barrel screws are tight  ,when you think they are tight they may need a little more. Lock tight is a must and screws should be checked after about 10 rounds as the gun will break its self in and sometimes move stock material in the holes causing the screw to be loose.

What ever you choose to do take it slow and review and do a few dry runs before you mix your bedding. This will give you the proper perspective when the moment  comes. Shut off your cell phone, turn down all music and TV, tell the wife and kids to stay away and then pray. It will be fine or it will be fine the second time , for many who have not done it before there is a second time. There are a lot of good products out there that will do the job, just do your homework (it is part of the fun).

    Good luck on your project.

  9. It is okay to  sit back and listen it is also okay to express how we feel, this is why we are who we are.

Conversations get heated when people have deep feelings about what is right and what is wrong.

Deep feelings of well founded truth give everyone  protection of  God given rights to life ,liberty and not to reasonably retard our goals and dreams of a happy life.

I said reasonable  because some people are happy killing you.

If a person who wants to play soldier and shoot his bumpstock  at the range or a safe place to shoot go for it. The fact that I do not approve should not stop that person.

If I do not want to give to a Gun organization because I do not like guns, that my right .

If you do not approve of my choice then I do not have to do business  with you.

What I am saying is America is still working.

The reality is there are more people with guns today more states with CCW laws right now than ever.

I do not see a problem.

If the law makers do things we do not approve of we vote them out. One group banned assault rifles, they got voted out and now we have them.

There is reason why  people buying guns surged after this last shooting in fl.  People want to be safe and they are  now understanding that the police cannot do it.

Police work when it comes to crime is most always after the fact, after the  crime has been committed . To protect and to serve is false advertising .

A antigun person will  hold to their feelings only when they think the police will protect them. Most will change when it does not happen.

I do not see anyone going after the Nuts out there but they have rights to.

  10. The only stuff I saw was that they dropped the NRA from their fund list. I didn't see any PR campaign bragging about it, or any anti gun statements. Just dropping NRA from their automatic donations. Then a press release after people freaked out saying as much, and that they are still pro firearm. Did you see anything beyond that?

IMO I'm tired of the NRA being seen as THE proxy for American gun rights. NRA sells us out a hell of a lot more than an over priced cup maker. I decided a few years ago not to back the NRA too. I'll gladly back institutions that actually do lobby for freedom, such as 2Af and GOA.

They have become a cash machine.

All they do is send requests for money and monthly letters stating that it is time to renew.

I find it funny that the requests to renew come after I had just renewed ,it is every month.

    Follow the money.

Talk radio has become like that also, they push for you to subscribe

  11. I think the most you have to do to a production rifle, is to fill an bed the stock as they tend to flex

The poly stock flexing more than a fiberglass or wood.

Depending on how far you will be shooting it may not make a difference. I got my new 308 Compass with a threaded barrel and have installed a nice break to tame recoil.

Also some guns just shoot better or like a specific  round. All the more reason to start reloading.

The money you save on a rifle can be spent on reloading. Trust me you will enjoy the sport a lot more and you will have far more control over the shooting process.

If you take a box of good factory rounds pull the bullet and weigh the powder you will see what I am talking about as few will have the same load.

There is a ton of information on the net these day a lot of shooting reviews that give you an idea of what ammo a production rifle likes.

When you build your own you have to do the heavy  living yourself.

Good luck and have fun, when the doctor releases  me I will breaking in the Thompson Compass starting a 100 yards the same day if possible.

  12. Just ask him what he recommends for your use and actually listen.

When he is done talking, you might ask him some of these questions if he hasn't beat you to it:

1- Is he going to true the action?

2- Which trigger does he recommend and why?

3- Which scope and scope mounting options does he recommend?

4- Which stock does he recommend?

    +1 on the 6.5 recommendation.

I like the pillar concept better than traditional bedding.

Plan on paying nearly as much for some decent glass as you pay for the rifle. March makes some nice LR scopes.

Having said all of that, unless you are truly experienced at shooting long range, you will likely shoot about the same with a decent gun that comes in a box. I am that guy, lol. Give me a Savage with a decent optic on it and I am good for every range I have access to around here. I'd spend that extra money on a quality suppressor.

Well said, it is cheaper to tweak a production gun and have just as much fun with more money.

as cheap as guns are you can buy a few and still be money ahead.
