  1. Thanks for the replys all, Nope, the carrier travels back and then on the forward stroke it hangs on or at the point of bolt/carrier hammer contact and the process of stripping the next round. You can slap the gun hard and it will go ahead and strip and chamber the round. This happens about every 3rd or 4th shot with the Tapco mag. Note that the rifle works perfectly with the modded saiga and the 3 metal mags I have. It seems like the rounds just strip easier from the metal mags. I really hate to get another Tapco mag just to see if it hangs too. Anyone run across any Norinco ma
  2. ok. I've seen the video of the mag test where the rifles are dropped and boolits go everywhere. I've read where if your mags are not metal reinforced they will break, just a matter of time! The tapco Mag looks good on my gun but It will not feed consistantly. (woof....too many beers but i've not been near guns.....) Anyway, U.S. parts count or not the things hang up in the mag on the forward stroke of the bolt. Makes a good bolt hold-open but you never know when it's gona do it! It sux! Does anybody know if the mags will eventually feed properly? How about graphite in the mag?
  3. Yep, Like cowtown, mine is a 09 - dimples - no stepped barrel and the barrel was threaded 14 LH. Thu
  4. My 56S-1 has a factory slant and it works and very well! I picked up a 351 comp for the X39 Saiga. It's loud and kicks like a mule! But the rifles are apples and oranges. Your mileage may vary. I've since picked up "The fishing weight." I'll give that a try. Thu
  5. BV, I like it! I may can do a little wire weld once It's on the barrel. I have one that's cut on each side but that makes for a weak sling mounting ring. I like this idea better. My gun already has the adaptions to mount the lower retainer so this should be easy. BTW, nice gun!!! What's the make on the upper and lower hand guards? Thu
  6. rmptben, Head over to the tech section. I just posted the "FSB & GB DIY removal and installation guide" Actually I could have taken the FSB off but moving it forward a bit worked perfectly. Hope it helps. Thu
  7. FSB & GB DIY removal and installation guide. This is for the 7.62 X 39 but you can adapt it for others. If you have cut the shroud off your muzzle and have threads or you cut your own threads, continue. If you have threads but haven't cut the shroud back even with the FSB....do it now. Half round jewelers file works. Jig Material: 10 inches of 5/8 square key stock 2 ea 1/4 X 1 1/2 bolts and nuts. (1/4 X20 threads) Tools: Drill Index up to 1/2 inch plus a 9/16 bit and a 5/8 bit. Dial Micrometer and/or Feeler gage Scribe Jewelers file, 100 sand paper, 220 sand paper Ch
  8. Update: Forget the 1/2 key stock. It will be too small. I used 5/8th square key stock, two pieces 5 inches long to make the removal, installation and holding jig. I'm typing up the whole DIY process now. Thu
  9. I'm glad you brought that up. I'm trying to gather info on that also. This is what I have in mind. First, I cut the front shroud off at the FSB. I "sawed" it off with a half round jewelers file keeping the flat against the sight. Round and round, went fast and looked like it was machined. 03-09 model with mag dimples and threaded, no "Y", no step. Anyway... Next I ordered the retaining pin and spring for the FSB from K-var and a AK74 Muzzle brake ( Tapco) to fit my 14mm X 1 lh threads from Carolina. I intend to drill out the dimples on each side of the FSB (four places) just deep en
  10. Well PA, It's not an issue, it's a challenge. There are builders and there are those that buy what builders build. In order to build, builders need knowledge. Shared knowledge is outstanding! Measure twice and cut once springs to mind. I've read back every post to page 34 so far. I know what a pain it is to plow old ground telling every newby the same info...easier to say "use the search" but the search don't always cut it. I'd rather browse the posts and not bug anybody if I didn't have to. I know what I'm looking for is there. But 165 or so pages! I'm an old fart and may not make it that f
  11. I got a vented tube from Carolina shooters SKU:GASTUBE-VENTED $30. It had to be fitted by gently filing down the "ramp" the lock rotates against but it's exactly like the tube on my Chink Pre-ban 56S-1. Put it on the Saiga and works like a charm. "Looks" good too! *G* Thu
  12. Ahhhhh, Thanks nalioth, Then the hydraulic pressure was enough to also dimple the barrel under the dimples as they were formed and the need to drill them out to make the FSB easier to press off? Thu
  13. Many of you have R&R'd the Saiga FSB. Evidently it is pressed on then held in place by "dimples". Are these dimples spot welds? Is that why the FSB is so hard to get off? (Didn't drill far enough...drilled too far! *WOOF!*) Those that cut the FSB off by carefully cutting across the botton and beating it off, did you drill out the dimples also? I'm thinking, press the FSB forward ( about 3/8's inch I guess) till it gets to the threads. Install a flashy thingy retaining pin and your good to go. (If you just want to use the 14mm LH flashy thingys) OR, R&R the FSB. Eith
