  1. http://www.cabelas.com/product/traditions-kentucky-50-caliber-percussion-muzzleloader-do-it-yourself-kit/1641445.uts It's a Christmas gift from my wife.
  2. I think Remington has simply out-marketed Savage. From the perspective of working on both Savage and Remington bolt guns, if I ever buy a bolt gun, it will be a Savage. I'm not crazy about the Accu-trigger, but it works well after getting used to it. Decades' worth of pre-accutrigger Savages out there, that can be rebarreled at home by anyone with a few hand tools. Timney makes a pretty good replacement trigger for them, too. Mine didn't have the Accu-trigger. The plain old trigger is super easy to work, though, and there are plenty of instructional videos. I made it so there
  3. Thanks. I'll take your word in good faith and keep the Savage.
  4. Thanks. Just wondering because a guy wanted to trade a 7400 in decent shape for the Savage that I restocked and worked the trigger on. Still not sure.
  5. H.R. 38 passed the House

  6. A week ago I put a 12 lb. venison neck roast into the CampChef at high smoke setting at 10 am. Wrapped it at 4 pm for two hours, then put it in a roaster with 5 halved onions, two large sliced green bell peppers, two cans of beef stock, and a bag of baby carrots and back in the smoker until the internal temperature reached 200. I easily tore it apart with rubber gloved hands. We ate some then and cryopacked the rest for freezing. The wife took a package out for tonight. OK by me, but more importantly her wanting more in a good indicator. When it comes out this tender it becomes YUM Sandwiches!
  7. It's a Boyd's stock and it did take very minor fitting. No problem some slow work with a Dremel couldn't handle. I have no glass bedded it yet, but the Barrell passes the dollar bill test. The bedding is a future project. There are videos about restocking the Axis on YouTube. IMHO it feels like a much nicer rifle, and I'd do add some weight that helps with the recoil. I'm not much for the flimsy plastic it came in. https://www.boydsgunstocks.com there are a couple different styles for the Axis. Typing on my phone if this didn't come out right.
  8. That happens a lot on chemies day. That's always during the summer, so no open season then. It's not unusual to have a cease fire during weapons re-qualification because of deer on the range.
  9. Chokecherries are edible even though they're bitter. They make very good wine if you can get enough before the birds. Most of ours are old and very tall. The trees are good for expensive lumber and firewood. Good for smoking, too.
  10. I haven't touched the loins yet, bit I did have a wonderful dinner of fresh liver and onions with a side of buttered orzo and asparagus spears tonight. The shot ruined the heart, which is usually my favorite.
  11. Nothing special grows there. Typical hay field with a mix of purple clover. In 1978 I counted a herd of 64 whitetail deer there, yarded up in mid Winter. Haven't seen it like that since. Of course there are two houses in that field now, mine and my brother's.
  12. It wasn't much of a "hunting" season, exactly 9 minutes after legal shooting time on opening day, to be precise. I woke up early, had coffee, ate, medicated, did the morning constitutional, got dressed, turned out the lights, and in the twilight I could see 5 doe about 40 yards in front of the house. Not wanting to spook them I snuck out the back door hoping to get to my tree stand in the back field. By the time I got to the back corner of the woodshed, the does had also moved toward the back of the lot. I stopped and sat on a stack of wood, not wanting to frighten them. I looked away and thre
  13. It turns the gun into a bolt gun..... NY style.
  14. I just bought a Lee Perfect Powder Measure after not having one for decades.
  15. If it doesn't do that with other mags that you previously used, I'd say it's the steel mags. It's hard to pinpoint on the information give. Do the steel mags fit tighter or looser? Is there enough play that the mag will rise far enough with recoil to engage the BHO? That's were I'd look first.
