  1. Yes I did remove the piston. I wasn't planning on removing the gas tube at first, but after cleaning the piston and seeing how dirty it was, I thought it would be a good idea to remove the gas tube so I can do a more thorough cleaning, but the gas tube wasn't budging so I gave up. By the way, when I turned the gas tube locking lever on the side, I did make sure that the gas tube was no longer locked by the lever.
  2. I'm using a UTG Quick Release side mount for my Saiga .308. I really like this mount. It mounts low enough to permit a decent cheek/chin weld, but high enough so that I don't have to remove it to strip my Saiga for cleaning. Removing the mount is easy with a turn of the lever, but I don't have to remove it for cleaning my gun. The mount will block your iron sight, so there is no co-witnessing with this mount. Some members look down on UTG scope mount, but I'm 100% happy with my mount. Fit and finish were excellent, and the mount centered over my gun. Mounting it is very easy, just follo
  3. Hi all, I have a question on how to remove the gas tube on my Saiga .308. After shooting my brand new, unconverted Saiga308 for the first time, I field-stripped it to clean. Even though I turned the lever on the side up to make sure it cleared the gas tube, I still couldn't lift the gas tube up to remove it. Is there any special technique or tool that I need to remove the gas tube? Do I have to remove the handguard before removing the gas tube? Thank you in advance for your answer.
  4. I went shooting this morning with my new Saiga .308 with 16-in barrel. It was unconverted and the only thing not stock is the SGM recoil pad instead of the cheap hard plastic butt plate. I am very, very happy with my rifle and I don't have any intention to change anything. That said, however if I live in other states, I would start converting it. But since I live in the oppressive California state, I'd rather have the not so evil looking sporting Saiga :-)
  5. This morning I went to the Angeles Shooting Ranges with my new Saiga .308 with 16-in barrel and my new DSA Fal Carbine also with 16-in barrel. It was very windy this morning, in my scope the target was moving back and forth more than an inch maybe 2 so it was not possible to shoot any groups this morning. I know some of you will disagree, but I'm much more happy with my Saiga than with my DSA Fal. I paid $500 for my Saiga at Ammo Bros and $1800 for my DSA Fal at Turner's. My Saiga is unconverted; so the strange trigger required some practice to get used to. My brother hated the Saiga trigger
  6. I paid $500 before tax and DROS for my Saiga .308. Total out of the door was $574 which was a very good deal in California.
  7. BigfootHunter, About a month ago I bought my Saiga .308 at Ammo Bros in Cerritos (very near where 91 and 605 freeways meet). When I was there, I saw 2 Saiga .223's on display and they might even have more in stock. You should check them out. It was my first time buying there, and it was a great store with very good service. Needless to say I'll buy more from them in the future, just need to save up first. Their website: www.ammobros.com
  8. The empty mags did not fit with the bolt hold opened or the bolt was closed. When I was modifying the rear mag catch, I was trying the mags in with the bolt stayed open so I could have a better view of the mag. As for loading the magazines, I usually don't load my mags to the maximal capacity; I usually stop 1-2 rounds short for maximal reliability.
  9. I had a hard time trying to decide between factory 8-rd or Surefire 10-rd mags for my first Saiga rifle in .308 Win. Being in California, until very recently, I thought all AK variants were illegal until I stumbled accidently on the Saiga rifles on the net. I finally picked up my Saiga last week and bought 2 Surefire 10-rd mags from Carolina Shooters Supply, great place with fast shipping. Both magazines did not fit my Saiga. I watched the Youtube clips on modifying a Surefire mag. I tried to file one mag for about 20 minutes, still couldn't get it to fit. I had to go buy a rotary Dre
