  1. I guess I'm one of those crazy people who think my rifle isn't a contestant in a fashion show. Function > Form
  2. Where did you get that wood furniture for the PTR-91? They both look nice.
  3. The Winchester 123 gr Super-X SP expands really well and is more effective than any of the Russian or surplus cartridges. It does cost more but so does all good hunting ammunition.
  4. NCStar is the bottom of the Barrel. You might take a look at a POSP; pretty arrodable as far as glass goes.
  5. I like how everyone just rattles off their favorite caliber, though there is also some good advice here. Accuracy: 7.62x39 has most difficult external ballistics, with the highest hold-over at 300 yards. In general it is noticeably less accurate than the other rifle calibers at 100 yards and definitely at 200, but it can definitely effectively engage man-sized targets at those ranges. .308 is really the only caliber that delivers significant energy past 400 yards. Ammo availability: .223, .308 are very very common domestic calibers and you can always find this ammunition in Walmart, sp
  6. I put a tritium front-sight post on most of my rifles. I do find it easier to acquire in the daytime as well with the color contrast, although if you switch the rear blade for aperature sight you probably wouldn't have this problem. I used this post: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/SCP865-6.html
  7. Thanks for collecting this data. I'm actually pleasantly surprised, we don't give up nearly as much velocity as I expected. Consider these #s, where they tested using 26" and 22" barrels - your Black Hills 168gr is less than 200 fps down from their 26" 700. http://www.snipercentral.com/matchammo.htm
  8. No, M14 mags are expensive. I don't see the point in AR-10 mags either, unless what he actually means are SR-25 mags, which are the only type p-mags are made for (as found in SR-25, DPMS .308, LWRC .308, etc.) Armalite's AR-10 uses a modified M14 mag and its as expensive as any Saiga .308 mag.
  9. You can get a torch with a liter of propane for like $15 at Walmart.
  10. BattleRifle3G makes custom furniture - depending on how specific of a look you want it may be worth emailing him about it. http://www.dinzagarms.com/furniture/brg3.html
  11. I would have tried a little propane torch I think, but odds are I would have ended up with it at a gunsmith's as well if it was really that tight.
  12. Only problem with the Romanian set from Centerfire is parts count because its all imported. From what I have read at least, the ATF does consider that stock to have a pistol grip due to the angle of the grip. So 922r applies and I think the only way to make parts count is to use some US parts in your magazines if you are using that entire set. An alternative would be get that set just for the stock and order handguards from Ironwood but they wouldn't match unless you refinished the stock which sort of defeats the purpose...
  13. I don't know about best but MAA has them. http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/saiga-308-rifle-iz138-p-230.html
  14. Yes I'm trying to figure out how I can need another rifle in 7.62x39, because that rifle does look pretty nice.
