  1. Arsenal builds their SGL line off of Saiga actions (their SLR is off of Bulgarian AK stamped 1mm receivers with US parts). So if you bought an SGL you'd have a nicely converted Saiga. I don't own one, but I hear great things about them.
  2. Elsewhere it's posted that the factory triggers on the 223 and 308s are improved over the 7.62x39; someone here might be able to confirm that? Also why not 5.45x39? 11 cents a round and a strong varminter round. I know they're tough to find, but sounds like for good reason.
  3. Not as pathetic a question as it sounds. I had hoped to add a few Saigas to the armory but I may only be able to add one for a few years. This will be first AK owned, only semi-automatic rifle as I sold off my ARs. I have plenty of other rifles for the looming zombie apocalypse, but my previous experience with the soviet arsenal has piqued my curiosity in Saigas. So which caliber Saiga rifle would it be if you could only have one?
  4. The Tapco stock/grip for unconverted Saigas is comparable to the same LOP grip/trigger reach as a conversion. You'll just have a longer overall gun, so you'll have to look a little further for the sights. It will make it much easier to restore to the sporting stock later if you want to, as you will not have moved the trigger. I am also tall, with long arms, and I have found I do not enjoy the M4 style adjustable stock. The argument for that style is that you'll keep the same LOP while wearing layers of gear/clothing. Only you know if you'll be doing that often. I've found most just pu
  5. Anybody have a link for long range shooting with the 20.47" barrel and maybe handloads? That's impressive with a 16.3" barrel, using tracers. 4 more inches might get you a little tighter groups at 1000m, and give you a touch more energy at that range.
  6. Nothing as prosaic as others ... I'm a military Chaplain, lastname Nelson. Needed a gmail acct before one of my trips to OIF and chapnelson was the only variation not taken.
  7. Appreciate the feedback folks! Looks like Saiga is perfect for my needs.
  8. Almighty God, for Nathan & Lauren I pray that your peace which surpasses all understanding will guard their hearts & minds in Christ Jesus. Our desire is wisdom for his doctors, but moreover healing for Nathan's body. Be their refuge & their strength, in Jesus's name. Mahalo, Chaps
  9. Appreciate the replies, I've not fired an AK since commbloc training in the 80s. After 23 years with Stoner's toy I'm ready for something new. I've worked on/with lots of other platforms so the conversion is alluring in itself. I think I got my answer - the Saiga receivers are better made, and fit & finish are better, yeh? So if you wanted a quality build, Saiga is the preferred foundation? Less rattle = better accuracy, yeh? I'm just cautious of building a $1000 conversion that functions no different than $350 WASR and trying to justify the $ since I know I'm going to do an S308 con
  10. I've been lurking here for a couple months as I got the bug for a couple Saiga projects; decided to start with 7.62x39, will do S308 later. Mississippi has the Saiga for $320ish shipped, but Classic has a Romanian military set up for $350 (before shipping) with synthetic furniture and a pile of loot. So I gotta ask, if you know you're going to convert it anyway, what is the advantage of a Saiga over just buying a Romanian? Mahalo, Chaps
