  1. A gas block is the last item I need to complete a build. I'll take anything I can get. Rusted, welded on, ground upon, bent, totally stripped of parts is fine. Let me know what you've got. Thanks for any help, Catter
  2. I'll take a bunch of pics tomorrow and post for discussion.
  3. We'll see. Maybe krinkov furniture. I'll have some good things to show off in a few weeks. Just wait for it. We got 4 of the 030s yesterday. I won't put my hands on them until Friday.
  4. From what I have seen, the piston has an extension that penetrates through the puck. As gas pushes both backwards, the puck stops and the piston withdraws from the puck, allowing excess gass to pass through the puck and out into the atmosphere. This creates a self regulating gas system. A short barrel system under 12.5" will require a custom piston...which I am busily working on as we speak for our sbs builds.
  5. As of yesterday, we have received 4 of them. ---Catter
  6. It is an original Saiga 12C with factory left side folder. Receiver is marked for law enforcement only. It is all correct accept the barrel has beec cut to 18". The originals had 22 or 24" barrels. So any idea of market value?
  7. I would like to know what the Saiga 12c with one 8 round russian mag is worth. The original barrel has been cut to 18" and threaded. Thanks ---Catter
  8. Very controllable. This is with a mix of buck, slug and bird shot.
  9. It is a home built SBS. I put the gun on a Form 1 with BATFE and built the gun myself. ---Catter
  10. This was with 150 grains of Pyrodex FFg equivilent, by volume and 2.5 ounces of number 8 shot. The gun weighs around 8 lbs and has a 12 inch barrel and it loads from the muzzle, one shot at a time... It is pretty fun to shoot but you have to hang on tight. 11. My friend Amanda runs the range where I like to shoot. She and one of the owners tried out the Saiga Shorty today. I think the shorty met with their approval http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyvW-GcB-5o&feature=BFa&list=ULGwt5ibGeHO4&index=6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwt5ibGeHO4&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL ---Catter
  12. Actually it has functioned very well for me. I plan to wring it out a little more pretty soon. I have been really busy at work and with family this summer so I haven't been shooting since I recorded the video I posted earlier. ---Catter
  13. I just wanted to add pics of the finished gun. ---Catter Edited to add: Oops! Looks like I already had.
  14. I need a complete set of saiga fire control group parts that you took out of you gun while converting. I'm going to use it for a different firearm project. I'll trade a foreign-made single hook fire control group for your old parts that you aren't likely to use. I need all parts and small pins. I don't need the springs or the standard pins that you needed for your gun conversion. Thanks for the help. ---Catter
  15. By scratch built I meant scratch built. I started with a solid piece of 12L14 steel bar stock and through bored it on the lathe to 875 caliber. Then I turned and threaded the breech plug 1" x 12 tpi. I made the stock from a cheap maple board. The only parts I bought were the lock, butplate and trigger guard castings and ram rod pipe. There is not a Federal restriction on barrel length or bore diameter for blackpowder as long as it does not fire fixed ammunition. It isn't even considered a firearm. Check your state laws prior to building something like this as laws vary by state. I plan to
  16. I was a gunsmith's apprentice for a little over a year in the mid 90s.That got me into machine shop practices, welding, and wood work. I have had an interest in mechanical design since I was a kid. Anyone can build this stuff with the right tools, patience, practice, and study. On a side-note, check out my scratch-built 7-bore percussion blunderbuss! This thing throws 3 ounces of shot in front of 150 grains of FFg. You know it went off ---Catter
  17. Yes. I placed the muzzle end in a 3-jaw chuck with a 1-inch spindle bore. I ran a steady rest just forward of the reciever bearing on the cylindrical portion of the barrel. I just placed 3 gas ports of similar dimension to the factory ports in my barrel. I measred 0.078 from the factory. The cobalt drill I had nearest that dimension was a 0.080 bit. My holes ended up at 0.083 inch. That little tab has worked perfectly, as specified by the pro builders. ---Catter
  18. I'm going to use the winchoke adapter that is shaped like the phantom style brake that Cobra sells. It adds 1.5 inches to the length but allows the use of all winchokes and mosseberg accuchokes as well as rifled tubes for sabot slugs. I will get the most utility out of the gun with that setup. The effective barrel length will range from 8.25" with no choke to 9.75" with standard chokes, to 12.25" with a rifled choke. I'm all about flexibility. Wait until you see the fitted case I'm making for this rig! ---Catter
  19. I will try to give a breif overview of what I did, step by step, to build the shorty 12. I didn't take any photos during the build. My wife always tells me that I should take pics as I go but I always get into what I'm doing in the shop and never want to stop for pictures. Anyway... I bought a new S12 model 109 built in 2009. my first order of business was to send in a Form 1 application to make and register a firearm. I entered all of the pertinent info and mailed the application package to BATFE. I then decided to do as much of the build as possible without cutting the barrel so
  20. I don't have a choke on it yet. When you run a choke, it provides a higher gas input to the system. I want to choke the gun and try the lighter stuff before I open a 4th gas port. It is on the verge of cycling with the fedral bulk pack shells now but the fiochi low recoil buck is really light stuff. Feels like a 20 gauge trap load. I have a feeling that it isn't going to run the really light stuff like the fiochi and 1 ounce trap loads. I'm okay with it. Besides, I can reload 1.25-1.375 ounce shot loads in AA hulls cheaper than bulk pack. ---Catter
  21. That target was absolutely shredded. I should have taken a still shot of it after those 11 rounds. I'll get on a complete writeup momentarily. ===Catter
  22. Range report and video, as promised. I shot just over 100 rounds through the gun yesterday. I started out by adjusting the Auto plug to function with Remington Nitro Sporting Clays loads. It took about 10 rounds to get it dialed in. I had had great luck cycling all buck shot and slug loads I tried after the initial setting of the plug. I could not, however, get the Fiochi low recoil buck shot to function after the initial setting nor could I get the super cheap winchester 1 ounce loads to function. It likes the Remington heavy dove loads and the Brazilian Rio 1.25 ounce field loads for che
