  1. Wow! Nice work! I never really looked closely at a Mosin till now. I may have to make room in the safe....
  2. I'd suggest drilling a dimple in the receiver so that the bump on the safety lever clicks into the dimple at the same time the lever hits the stop. Pretty much what I'm doing in the SAFE position.
  3. Perfect. I'm at work so I can go poke around the tool crib later on to see what I can find.
  4. Thanks Jack, I really appreciate the advice!
  5. Ok I see exactly what you are saying. Unfortunately I can't TIG so I was thinking of drilling and tapping the side of the receiver to except a small set screw as a dead stop so I could remove it to remove the safety should I ever have to. Is that a serviceable fix or a bad idea?
  6. Jack, thanks for the ideas. I have a small dimple already drilled in the safe position that could be used in conjunction with your idea of a small stud for a dead stop. In the fire position I got lucky in that my safety stop just barely lets the bump on the lever slip off the bottom of the receiver. Not so far that its difficult to slide back up but enough to hold it securely. Jack, would you be able to post a picture of how you do your stud just to make sure we are on the same page and I think we are.
  7. I'm just curious if the design of Krebs lever will stop the lever from riding up and off the receiver when on safe like my factory lever does. If not is their a mod that I missed to keep the factory lever from doing this?
  8. My SAR-1 was ridiculously inaccurate and other that came from the same batch were tack drivers. Even the factory target was a joke. It also had a serious trigger slap issue. I know they are nice rifles, I just got a bad one.
  9. My saiga runs the Federal flawlessly and has for a thousand rounds or so. I haven't had any Remington available to try for a long time but it used to give me some issues and the Winchester won't run in anything but my pump guns and side by side.
  10. I agree on trashing it. I'm not afraid to tinker on firearms but I'm by no means a gunsmith and can see the potential for a lot of new people screwing up their guns because of this. I started on this forum when people like Tromix, JT, Cobra and others were sharing their knowledge and now its a bit of a free for all. They all have forgotten more information on the saiga platform in a good nights sleep than most of us will ever know.
  11. Vlad,I really do appreciate the advice, but I've tried it. The front bump on the afg would have to be about 3/4 of a inch long to function as a dead stop and when I try a c-clamp grip my thumb is thick enough to totally obscure the front sight. I'm not trying to be a naysayer but its true.
  12. I do like the look of those. The problem is that they are a tad too short. I need the shroud to extend back far enough to just clear my MD Vplug to minimise the chances of my gorilla hands contacting a hot barrel. Vlad, I have huge hands and really can contact the barrel that way and no, I'm not holding the firearm in some odd fashion.
  13. Cobra, thanks for taking the time to post the pics and reply. Those are some fine looking saigas! It's good to know that they really do aid cooling to that level as that's the primary reason I'm in the market for a shroud. I would probably go with a ALU but I can't justify the extra cost and turn around time just to get a heatsink even if its a very high end heatsink. CSS. I do like those shrouds but I'm trying to keep the OAL of the firearm down to a minimum. If I do another build it would be interesting to use one of your shrouds with a monster break and try to make a bipod slug gun.
  14. It really would be nice to have a truly custom shroud but I don't need the comp feature as cool as it would be. I'll most likely go with the above unit due to functionality, price and shipping time... and I think it looks badass and keeps with the look of the way my s12 is set up.
  15. I had a SAR-1 that I sold to fund a SGL-21 and I'd do it again in a second.
  16. This is the shroud I'm seriously considering. It looks good and I think it will provide a serious amount of cooling.
  17. I've seen that shroud listed on their sight. I'm looking at a few different manufacturers all with the holes drilled all the way through which would remove more weight and further aid in cooling. Anyone have information on the Kineti-Tech products?
  18. King of the Hill, thanks for the video and weight info. What brand of shroud was that?
  19. MegamanX, I do like the ALU offerings and have also heard of the long turn around time. How effective is the built-in break on that shroud?
  20. Thanks pedal for the useful info.........
