  1. im going to put this project on hiatus. gonna turn the build into a khyber 105, and eventually put an underfolder on it. after giving it much thought, i think this project would fare better if it was in 7.62, for two reasons: more pressure, and the ease of the 45 degree gas port hole.

    That thing looks awesome!

p.s. maybe its shortstroking due to having less powder than the 7.62x39, which you said worked well in your amd.

What will you do if widening the gas hole wont work? Shorter/weaker recoil spring? Hotter loads?

exactly. the 45 degree port on my amd is a 1/2 inch away from the muzzle. and it goes. even after testing it with a handful of dirt, it shot like an ak should. this is why my next build will be this project but for now the 5.45x39 gets turned into a 105

    how did it group?

wasnt able to group. it was pretty much a bolt action

  2. took it out last week. it is shortstroking. the carrier moves back, but only 1/2 an inch. i am thinking of drilling the gas port hole bigger, about 1/8.

i am actually suprised it is short stroking. my previous build, the amd65 with galil gas block, has the 45 degree port 1/2 inch away from muzzle, and it cycles really well.

if this doesnt work, then i guess there is too much of a pressure drop way up front on a 16 inch, and ill just go ahead and turn this into an ak105 clone

  3. He explained it pretty well - the longer gas piston is a necessary part of moving the gas block so far forward - he wants the barrel whip caused by the action cycling to start as late as possible, as close as he can get to the time the projectile is exiting the barrel.

The part I don't understand is adding weight should make the reward bolt movement heavier and cause more recoil when it is in motion, whether it be later or not, as he explained with the barrel whip. That should make all follow up shots less accurate, which would reduce the accurizing factors of extending the area between the GB and its original position. I think its a great project, don't get me wrong. I just want to know how well it does in increasing accuracy overall, not just per bullet

i realize that there will most likely be barrel whip. but since the gas block is so moved forward, i theorize that the barrel will have been "reset" back to its original state by the time the next follow up shot exits the barrel. even while the next quick-followup-shot is travelling down the barrel while in the "whipping stage", soon as it passes the gb, the barrel wouldve already have flexed back and when it goes to flex again due to the action cycling, the bullet wouldve already exited the muzzle. again this is in theory.

i forgot to mention, i added an rpk pluger recoil assembly and wolff xp spring for extra rigidity. also a pg reinforcement plate. the wolff xp spring should dampen the rearward bolt movement a little

ive yet to testfire but i will let you guys know soon, when time allows. i will be testing this alongside a friend's standard config ak74. even so, going by all this, i sometimes wish i had the resources at the time to build this on a 1.5mm receiver with thicker RPK barrel

  4. Very interesting and very unique, my only concern would be if there will be enough pressure to cycle the weapon with the gas port so close to the end of the barrel.

my previous build had a 45 degree galil gas block on an amd65 barrel. the gas port is 1/8 in, and 1/2 inch away from the muzzle, with an extended amd65 brake at the end. cycles fine. so that gave me hope when doing this.

i drilled the new gas port hole to be the same size as the original that came on the barrel. but as for cycling and dwell time, that is the reason for using an ak74 brake. i am hoping the brake can provide enough backpressure to cycle the action, just in case. and being that its a brake, it should add performance by reducing recoil

also, take a look at the AKSU. it has the port close to the muzzle as well, and yet it cycles fine even without its booster/flashhider

  5. That's pretty neat. How does it help with accuracy? You plan on testing it soon?

i plan on testfiring soon, yes.

i moved the gas block forward after seeing the slowmo vids of the ak. the barrel in front of the gas block would whip when the ation would begin to cycle, and the fsb all the way at the end adding weight did not seem to help (if the galil is an improved, accurized version of the ak, then i feel that there is a reason they went with the fs/gb combo instead of adding a seperate fsb all the way at the end as in the standary ak47/akm/74)

. if the bullet is still in the barrel while it is whipping that would affect accuracy. by putting the gas block more forward, the bullet will have less to travel down the barrel when the action begins to cycle. i plugged and welded the original gas port hole, then pressed and pinned a sleeve over it (made from an old beat up gas block). i am hoping this adds a little bit of reinforcement to the barrel if there is any barrel whip when cycling. i have read up on PSL owners who cut down their barrels to reduce barrel whip, and that also gave me a bit more incentive to go ahead and do this.

  6. well i wouldnt be cutting anything up or welding anything. im currently working on an unrelated project [the stock to a mosin is being stained and is actually hanging a couple feet from me] but when i get around to it ill make sure to document and share, just in case anyone else is interested in the idea.

how do you mean by "it came out pretty ugly"? just didnt match all that well?

i aligned it using the "that looks about right to me" method before welding. bad idea. so might have to redo it again

  7. yes it is 14x1lh

as for playing around with an amd brake, i have tried cutting one up and welding it to the front of an ak74 brake to see if i can make a loud brake even louder. it came out pretty ugly and i scrapped using it, but if you wanna play around with this idea as well please tell us the results smile.png

  8. ive always wanted an amd65, but never got over its ugly (to me) utilitarian look. so i built one, with mods. it was a bit of a challenge because everything required refitting or shimming.

    DSC_0109.jpg

amd65 pattern barrel, amd65 front trunnion, amd65 length piston, extended 3 hole brake from amd65tech which i extended further by an inch at the end, amd65 trigger guard, and built on a 1.5mm receiver. the rest polish underfolder, NOS bolt & carrier, selector, bulgarian hinge block, gas tube, hand guards, resized cleaning rod, tula krink dustcover, russian pistol grip, galil front sight gas block, east german sling

the 45 degree 1/8 size gas port hole is about a half an inch away from the muzzle, and it cycles beautifully even after throwing a handful of dirt inside the action ( hey, if it cant handle dirt, its a bad build imo). 16.5 inch barrel, with 12 inches of rifling. i welded a 1 inch steel spacer in front of the amd65tech 3 hole brake. imo i think it looks better than the 4 hole. the brake will not make your gun front-heavy and does its job with the recoil. some people might not like it because its loud, me i like big loud fireballs.

  9. usually when you say ak vs. ar, people automatically think 7.62x39 vs. 5.56 because of vietnam. and this is where the argument becomes flawed.

should be ak74 vs. ar-15 since the 5.45 was made in response to the 5.56

you want to compare the 47 to something, compare it to the m1 carbine.

AK wins this debate though, reason for the innacuracy rep is because of quality control from the factory: canted sights, twisted receivers, etc. now if someone took the time to unfuck this shit, you still wont hit the wings off a fly but for practicality and reliability youve got something thatll give these $2000+ short-stroke-AR-wannabe-AK a run for its money.

bolt forward assist vs. heavy bolt carrier moving forward

modularity vs. side optic mount + practice

    accuracy vs. practice

ergonomics vs. dont be a pussy

for basic operation, the ak is so simple a child can use one...and they do.

to actually run one to its full potential, the ak will require a bit more technique and dancing.

as for the AR, yeah it looks cool, its accurate, and very convenient to use, but doesnt mean a lick of shit if it doesnt shoot now does it

  10. i dont use a brush. a brass .22 jag and patches work well. also a dewey coated cleaning rod. to flush out the corrosive salts i use a 3:1 mix of distilled water:denatured alcohol. soak a few mins in seafoam deep creep, then the jag and patches.

  11. i HAVE to do a bullpup build next. but i wonder, if i popped out the barrel, cut it, added a bulgy fs/gb, and blind pinned an extended brake (like an ak104/105) and bullpuped the whole thing, would that be a bit "too much" to the user when it comes to actually firing it? i like my shit as loud and obnoxious as possible and as short as the law will allow me to, but i dont want my face burned by the muzzle flash or anything...

  12. Wait hold up and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but...

Forum topic was recrown and pin a flash-hider.

Only reason to pin is if you live in a ban-state and you can't use a flash-hider in a ban-state sans pre-ban stuff which you won't need to pin anyway.

actually he wants to pin due to NFA reasons. after the cut he'll have 14.5 inches if rifling and with the brake pinned he'll have a legal 16+ inch barrel

  13. either or. depends on the gun. if its some frankenbuild, then whatever. otherwise i like it as historically accurate as i can get it. for example, im not throwing rails and plastic shit on my aksu build. and im not putting wood on my ak104 clone. my ak74 has an ak74m brake, so i wont put wood but ill go with plum since only the 74's got plum. oddly my historically innacurate bulgy 74 underfolder has some nice russian wood on it. i refuse to put any m4 looking stuff on any of them though, unless i do a strictly practicool build in the future...

  14. the proper ak103 brake is made by either krebs or ak-usa. i have had both, the krebs isnt chrome lined, the one by ak-usa is. i sold the krebs one with a rifle.

i currently have an ak74 by ak-usa with the brake. i highly reccomend it.

  15. i used duplicolor ceramic engine semi gloss, and baked it on. it came out great. sandblasted the original arsenal finish first.

i use seafoam deep creep to clean my guns, and let it soak inside the muzzle brakes to help with the carbon buildup since my crap state demands they be permanently on. i noticed if you let seafoam soak too long it starts to flake off the paint....damn sad.png well, on the receiver part anyway. the barrel end doesnt.

i will refinish with duplicolor again, no doubt. hoping i just got the prep wrong. does anyone use a primer with their duplicolor? would primer help?

  16. well, did some more work, and im finally done.

started off as this (not my pic, borrowing im_n2_vws)

    post-39380-0-80781700-1332111642_thumb.jpg

    became this:

    WP_000677.jpg

    and now its this:

    WP_000760.jpg

    WP_000762.jpg

    WP_000758.jpg

found that the rear of the receiver was slightly twisted either from the factory or from carrier mashing issues when i was shooting 154gr soft points constantly, and why i had to zero it with the post all the way to the left or cant the rsb in order to get the front post center. fixed all that up, added the 100 series stock, got a saiga leaf sight engraved with the cyrillic P, 4, and 5, took an Akbuilder pg plate and reshaped it to a round-tab, and filed the uneveness of the front sight itself with jewelers files. its currently zeroed and dead on at 100 with the post in center, will finalize at 200 nexttime. but right now, i just need to sandblast and refinish again and done! :)
