  1. I used my vertical mill to put a row of 3/16" or 1/4"(don't remember which) x 1" slots down each side of my forend. Some people have written that they have used a Dremel for this but I would think that would be hard to control. I suppose I could do this for you for a small fee if you'd like. If interested, email me at Makarovnut@gmail.com and we can discuss further.
  2. Yes it happened to me also. If I recall correctly your trouble comes from the "flat" spring sliding out of place while being assembled. I think the spring was falling into a groove that it did not belong in? I believe the spring is simply used to prevent gast tube rattle and that it is not really needed. The shape of the gas tube allows gas to escape around the piston so a loose tube will not affect performance. Just my opinion, Frank
  3. For hunting big game animals, only soft point/hollow point expanding bullets should be used. Non-expanding milsurp bullets are likely illegal fodder. As Tritium says lighter bullets are better for the twist of the barrel.
  4. Yuri was very quick to respond to my email and order questions. I sent email to: order@FreedomOptics.com
  5. Very nice T30! I've been thinking about a fiber sight as well and had picked up the same rods from Brownell's a while back. Sharing your work here is a motivater to start spinning stock in the Smithy. Are you a machinist by trade? Again, nice work.
  6. I have micro-adjustable on my .308. Offers a much better sight picture for me. Solidly built and easy installation.
  7. I have a green AK buffer from Black Jack in my .308 without issues. Haven't paid attention to whether or not there is a reduction in felt recoil. I like the idea of eliminating the metal to metal contact when the bolt slams to the rear.
  8. There is something else to keep an eye on which is the orientation of the spring as the rear of the gas tube is lowered into place. Being a newbie myself (relative to Saiga's), I broke the spring upon my first reassembly of the rifle. As the tube is being lowered into position the spring wants to slide out of position causing interference and binding. I don't have my rifle in front of me while at work so I'm going from memory here but I think there are grooves on the top and bottom of the gas tube that the spring must be positioned in for proper assembly. I don't believe the spring i
  9. How about a halo / reflex sight? No magnification and free of parallax. I bought a GuideGear (BSA) model from www.sportsmansguide.com for less than $50 and like it. BSA tells me it has a battery life of 4hrs continuous use but I think its more than that.
  10. I've used Wolf Gold soft point for whitetail hunting. I haven't shot it past 100 yds so I can't speak much on accuracy but it is at least as accurate as the Winchester and Remington I was shooting the day I was zeroing my gun.
  11. Mine was very difficult to disassemble the first time also. The link offered by Tritium must not be an S-308 as it does not show the "flat spring" (sort of shaped like as squared oval) that mine has? One side of my gas tube spring is broken. Anyone know where to obtain one? Thanks In Advance
  12. My eye sight is becoming an issue for good sight pictures with the longer sight plains on rifles. For my newly aquired S-308 I installed a halo sight (no magnification) which eliminates issues of having to see and align both sights and the target at once. I have only shot it to 100 yds but really like it for up to that distance, beyond that I'd want magnification. I will be trying it in N. WI for deer this coming week. I bought it from the Sportsmans Guide for less than $50.
  13. My 2 cents, I have been using Seafoam's DEEP CREEP for my auto loading firearms as well as my machine tool. It seems to do pretty well on deposits, and leaves a light oil upon evaporation of the solvents. I have cans of it everywhere. Because only a light oil remains I will usually use another lube for the higher pressure areas in firearms. I am cheap and have had decent luck with anti-seize from Permatex. I am new to the Saiga .308 but think it's going to be a fun gun. The only thing I don't like so far is the lack of parts availability and that every piec of brass ejected is
