  1. Any technical improvement in the later Vepr's VS vs: the early ones??... I've posted in Vepr site here. I have a fully moded Saiga 12 I shoot in local competition... So far, the only input has been neutral.... The input I'm getting is that the Vepr is no better than a well tuned Saiga?... I had thought the Vepr gas system might be the biggest improvement.... I'll mod the Vepr if I decide to get one myself.

  2. I shoot a self-modified Saiga 12 in low level local competition. All the goodies, polished bolt, gas plug, magwell, and on. I use mostly SGM 12 rd.  mags & 1300/1245 fps x 71/2 shot. The gun generally runs well, say 98% of the time..... no complaints really. Is the Vepr with the self regulating gas system a better platform to begin with???. I see that some of the original Vepr's with the wooden stock are priced less than the new models with the "welded" folding stock.... (I'll be doing all the usual Saiga mods to the Vepr so either will work for me at this point OR do the late model imports have any ADDED mods which makes the price difference up???..Nuts and bolts... is the Vepr "better" for competition purposes???.. Mike

  3. The extractor just needs to hold the shell lightly.... it will hit the ejector upon firing and retracting...Check your bolt, the gun will not lock up easily (that last 1/8th"). I'm trying to eliminate ANY resistance to full lock up.....For instance, 1911 Colt's and their variants don't want too much extractor tension or they won't feed correctly, don't confuse the extractor's job with the ejector's job..... Remember these are basically AK battle rifles, meant to function with Mil spec ammo... I'm just trying to get 100% function with light loads in shotgun competition.

  4. Reading info here... Got the AK disconnect spring....Didn't seem to need any cutting ..... Haven't tested live so far. Trying to keep the FPS under 1300 with all rounds (7 1/2, 00 Buck and low recoil slugs). Gun has all the mods & mag well (competition gun only). From day one, I always thought the extractor tension was way too much, time will tell?...

  5. Competition shooter. Currently using the JT mag well and SGM 12 rounder's.....R&R and Firebird (Akdal) have 15/18/20 rounder's...I find at least one mag change necessary (usually 2) per stage... Need some larger cap. mags . Why can't or why isn't SGM offering them?...I'd settle for and adaptor kit splicing 2 mags , (Ala R&R & Firebird). Can't use the drum with a mag well (don't even want too). CSS, got any info????...

  6. I had the vented version on my competition Saiga, worked fine. I recently switched to the Russian style compensator..... Let me know if you might be interested ?, I'm in AZ also.

  7. Have no fear....never have seen the lighter loads required for the smaller steel plates (plate rack style) in my area....If they use 00 buck, it's for the bigger steel plates, like 12x18...paper is sometimes 00 buck ( 2 holes reqd) but generally slug (1 hit reqd),....slugs on those 12x18 plates sometimes. max birdshot is normally listed @ #7 1/2. I'm using 1255 fps loads as the highest & low recoil slugs and 00 buck...the saiga has been very reliable ( all the polishing, etc done).

  8. A thought....anyone using the AKDAL FIREBIRD 15 mag connversion has SGM cut off mag /tops/springs/....free 2 rders????....I'm going to put block in the botom of the SGM mag since there is no lip anymore on the SGM mag...

  9. Naturly,I ported the gun (4x.092"...did the gas port "D" mod....I don't remember any FTF's...Shoot competiton gun.... Never real dirty (I use "Frog Lube" and no other product).... The gun, run's fine for my use....all shells work...

  10. I moded my stock Sagia 12 front sight with a red fiber insert and drilled the stock rear sight to accept 2 very small green fiber inserts......total cost was less than $15.00. I shoot competition in open class because of the Saiga x box mags. It's very fast to aquire on target/clays. That said, lot's of shotgunner's use only the front sight..., I know the fiber rear has helped me with the longer "slug" targets, misses are uncommon. If you can get a bright fiber insert for whatever sight you decide to go with?.... try one. I have a new FastFire 3 and CCS Saiga mount I haven't bother to install yet because the home mods are fine even though I can use a "red dot" in the open class that I shoot in. I am not good with the computor or I'd post some pics...Mike

  11. "Frog Lube" on everything.. The yuk just wipes off, lubes/penetrates too. Shoot lot'sof 22's (lead,CCI)... wipes off....2011 open 9mm, same, M-11 sub gun, same. Have not used just plain oil for sometime.....Saiga12, Akdal also...no oil. Guns used primaraly in competition... To each his own, cleanup is a dry towel.

  12. Check www.Brownells.com... there are low temp solders that bond well with metal when a special flux is used. Silver solder / normal brasing rods arn't generally molten til in the 1050/1100 degree range....a little hot I would think...I've used the heat absorbing materal you pack around the weld area to pull the heat away... it works, your going to need something to pull the heat away... About 6000 degrees at the tip of the heli-arc (TIG), be careful..... Food for thought ... the old fire sprinkler heads used a drop of low temp solder to keep the spring intact... too hot.. zing goes the spring...that's how they work...

  13. I shoot with a fellow competitor who has the R&R magwell set up. I have the JTE setup... I'd do the R&R setup, simply for this reason... eventually the rear lip on the SGM mags is going to wear off, meaning the mag will be worthless. You can see that the R&R locks into the side of the mag, does not use the rear lip at all. If a worn mag isn't a problem ?, the JTE or similar unit is a improvement over the "rock & lockers" in MOST people's normal use. Lot's of competitors use the "rock & lock" with great sucess and too each their own... I have the extended mag release which is helpful...

  14. I'd bet on the plug not being out 1 full turn before you put it on any setting..... You might inspect the recoil spring.... as per JTE Engineering, the hammer can drag on the top of the spring (push down on the spring with the dust cover off, is the hammer hitting it causing drag?... (I used a piece of a beer can to shim the BOTTOM of the spring guide rod into the receiver more tightly, eliminating the up and down movement). One of the other vendors (Paully ?), here has shown that the extractor spring port in the bolt may not have been drilled to the correct depth causing WAY too much pressure (I think there is too much spring pressure anyway).....Have you tried a Colt 45 spring on the 1st position of the spring guide?....(Basislly, this is what the vendors are selling in their "kits"). I shoot a Colt, so I have various different ones, try 13#'s up... Sounds like your doing everything right, it's just that irratating last little thing.......Maybe a "Monday" gun one of the most dreaded of all Saiga 12's????.....I don't shoot anything but low power rounds of various manfacturers in competition and I'm now near 100% trouble free operation with 12 rd mags and 1250 FPS ammo... (still a "new" gun with less than 150 rounds thru it). Let us know what you find out, might be something new?..

  15. Guess i should have said most popular. MikeAZ, does it look proportional? Can i get a pic? Thanks for the input. Goldeneagle76, that mini monster was my second choice on looks although i like the claw version.. My gun is mostly a safe queen....

Don't have a clue of how to put up a pic... just find papazero's posts lot'sof pics

  16. Well, at least someone is trying to build a better "mousetrap". It's a start. I bought the "Alliance" Soumi conversion for my M-11 sub gun. It was nose heavy, had a lot of good features but the bad outweighed it. Had to return the upper for major service, very quick turn around. Looks like the "aim" of the weapon is for competition?, why only an 8 round mag?.... Also way too pricey for me, looks heavy?.....
