Whole new ballgame!!, .....Pressed, the gas port block off this morning.... It's a 4 port barrel... One port (front ) was completely blocked. All 4 ports appear to be equally spaced/circular/not miss drilled.. I'm proceding with the "D" port mod .... just a little concerned about how far forward I can move the "D" cut..... already it looks like I'll have to go forward more than the posted pics I can find here??? Since it's blocked, maybe I should just do the 3 port mod and leave the front port blocked? I'm sure the Factory had a good reason for using 4 ports, too bad it didn't happen in this case. Anyone run into this before???....No drilling till I get some responses. Since the block has to be in the proper place for the pins to re-alighn, I don't see anyother choise than making the "D" longer toward the front???? to expose the "lost" 4th. port. Not sending off... DIYS project. Mike

You would have thought that the Russians could at least drilled the gas ports in the right place????.... Having had 2 Saiga shotguns, I would have thought that by now the Factory could have at LEAST figured out were to drill the gas ports????... Just bought a "2012" manufactured NIB Saiga 12 today. (I was going to build this for competition).... DAMMIT!... only the center port is completely open, MAYBE the left side is not too bad BUT the right side is at least partially blocked (as you view it looking down the barrel).... I remmember getting chokes with the others... none in the box?. I've built a few kit AK's and 2 Saiga shotguns. The shotguns always needed the gas ports opened.....but, I'da thought MAYBE?, things were improved as the PRICE sure went up from $189 @ CDNN years ago...I've seen a post here that you could send the weapon? back to the importer for the ports to be drilled out??? any information ??? ... (My dime or their's for shipping???) I could do this myself and might ... BUT the SLOPPYNESS of the build versis the price is way wrong...
That said, my Firebird Akdal cost a LOT more and is dissapointing in some ways....

I have a Firebird Akdal built by Jim himself. I've just shot in local matchs so far. I have the same mags that you do. My stock Akdal was in a batch that had some problems with certain brands of ammo (light primer hits) that had a more rounded primer rather than flater. With some input from Jim, mods were done to the stock extractor spring.... I would still get a occasional "light" hit so I installed the Wolff ex. power Ar 15 hammer spring as others have done.....that problem seems to be resolved. I'm using a simple carpenters nail bag for now with the 3 each 10 rounders (it's ok for now and simple). I'm shooting cheepo round ball slugs... (they arn't accurate). I'm ignorant of a accurate slug for the smoothbore shotguns even after some serching on the net. The Firebird setup seems to function with whatever ammo (1145 & 1350) fps.that I'm feeding it....however, I think I've read elsewhere that the Akdal likes the lower power ammo. I guess were kind of like pioneers with this platform. I agree with all your posted info... were are the Hi Cap steel mags and the drum???... Check some other postings on this site.. Tromix is on hold with his parts til the big sticks come out...Time will tell..

Most will report that getting the forcing cone reamed also helps with the recoil.... Some Factory guns come with ported barrels. Don't think the Factory would mess with this if there was no reduction? (Mossberg is one who has some ported barrel models). The "new" Pat Flanigan Mossberg model has barrel porting.... OF course, this puts you in "Open" class for most of the shooting organizations... don't know if this is your goal?

March of 2012???... that's a long time.....One can see what needs to be done to the stock mags (for an extention type round increase). and Firebird has this figured out..... I've stashed some "gun" money, damm that Mossberg 930 "Pat Flainigan" 13 round tube loader is a lot closer than March.... OH, well....what to do????....

Any update on the Hi-Cap mags for the 1919? I've got 4 each 5 rounders but they are not much help for an "open" gun..... I see Firebird has an extention/Hi cap but I would guess he is not going to sell just the extentions at this time??? Anyone's "list" I can get on??? Point the way please.....

Interesting.... wished you would have chosen to make a mag extention... Recent videios show the Firebird mag coupler and extention... I'm not a mind reader but this seems to be what others have thought? I'm pretty sure it would have been worth your time to figure something out along the same lines.. The sales predictions for the Akdal are good, mine should be here very soon. I'm waiting for a reply from Firebird about the mag extentions.. (See the PE Kelly entry this forum)

Well, I took a chance.... bought an Akdal. I had both a S12 & a S20. (early 22" guns).I did all the work on them, moved trigger groups, opened ports, etc, polished all the parts (nice triggers, etc). I never felt comfortible with the non-bolt hold open mag, right hand mag changes . I was "aiming" for competition worthy firearm (A pun). Never happy with what I could or could not do with the Saiga's. So now, I'm playing with another "maybe" gun, guess this is why we play?????......

sign me up... i'm thinking someone will make an extention rather than a whole new mag...sure seems like it would be less work/engineering.... something along the lines of a slotted, flat clamp to grasp both parts in the middle & lock squarely... then your 922 mag plates would have a greater appeal. 922 will be on us soon for the Akdal. i'd shoot for 10 rounds minimum
I bought one of your saiga 20 guage mags.. tweeked the mag a bit and it was a 100% runner...sold gun, 8 rounds just not enough for competition

I'm waiting, waiting.... Want to purchase one for competition. I've seen this question asked but never a clear answer? What parts are needed for 922 complance once the "hi-cap" mags are out? I see Tromix has many parts already....

I just had to round/polish the rear feed lips a bit.... ran fine then. This was with low brass cheapo 7 1/2's. Without a bolt hold open, I can't load the mag easy. Lot's of work done to the gun... bolt polished /922 and on and on, etc. .... Looks like it's not going to work for a quick mag change in USPSA ????, but then THEY are "tube' feeders and don't want their $3000.00 dollar guns to be obsolete..SO, THEY JUST MAKE "NEW" RULES UP TO PUT THE "SAIGAS" IN THEIR place....

I've done all the mods (early" 22" gun) been waiting for the "drum"... Do you think it will ever happen???? I don't think I'm giong to spend the $$$$ for the plastic ,clear mags??? Do they hold up, (lips) ??? Any imput??? Mike

Who rents the die to thread these barrels??? I'd like to cut down to 18 1/4" and thread my early import barrel and add the Poly-Choke

Anyone Actually seen any of the "Mike Davidson" stuff??? Is this guy for real.... seems to offer all WE want... then the "delays" excuseses, I got a double charge on the drum and he could'nt refund it.... so I cancelled the whole mess...now we have the mag well, BHO, come on COBRA, Have you ACTUALLY SEEN THE STUFF??? CLEO.... If you live in a State/County that the CLEO won't sign off on...Set up a Corporation.... I know it's a bit of work BUT you don't NEED the CLEO at ALL, no pic, I don't think you even need the fingerprint cards. You will need to keep the Corp. active yearly....

Your going too find the "legal" places are drying up.... BUT never fear...Lots of good shooter's. I lived off of Juan Tabo & Constitution. Join the private club that's off I 25 and just So. of the airport. OR YOUR best bet is the CITY range that's on the west side(I 40)... Lot's of different shooting diciplines at the City range... cowboy, USPSA, plinking.... might as well face it... they are roping us in...but you will be with friends and guns...Post if you need more info...

Too late... It's done ("D" port / ports opened), Now, at least I can get a "pick" into the ports for cleaning purposes. If there are a lot of other "posts" on this subject.... I didn't find them????..I guess I'll just have to clean more often. I doubt that I would have been able to "angle-port"the front hole as it was completly covered I didn't even know there was a 4th port?.... Blundering on?....
