  1. I think its pretty obvious. Drill out the dimples and drill more if it doesn't move... I've done several standard aks and its more a matter of punching the pin and unscrewing with them - placing the new piston, drill new pin hole and replace pin. But why screw with the piston - other than to keep the standard config stock and fcg? A pg conversion eliminates the need for the piston change.
  2. I decided on a standard fixed AK stock because the 308 has more recoil than the "lesser" calibers - the folders tend to have worse "ergonomics" than the fixed stocks. The one exception that I have found is the romanian side folder which feels about the same to to me. The ace stocks look to have decent ergonomics though and I don't have personal experience with them - but they are also more money. Bottom line to me is that I don't see the benefit of folders on this type of rifle.
  3. Well, I would suggest getting the red star vepr 308 fcg - I know its more $$ but its so worth it - fully adjustable, no worries. That's probably a G-2 fcg - a wonderful fcg for standard AK's but not the s308... I do know that there are existing posts on the proper modification needed - so I'd search and find those if that's the way you need to go.
  4. The best ammo for the lowest prices...
  5. Hey, congrats on a great bear! And a pg conversion carbine too. What kind of optic is that? And yes, tell us the load used... Good to see fellow hunters on the forum.
  6. If you do a pg conversion using us-made pg and buttstock and us made fcg, you are good to go regardless of what mag you use.
  7. I used some brake cleaner today on my s308 with the duplicolor 1200 and it didn't bother the finish fwiiw.
  8. Strong solvents... I know that even Hoppes will remove the finish but not bad. Acetone will affect it. Don't know about brake cleaner - may very well. Interestingly, the original Saiga finish comes off with acetone too. Try it - you'll see. I know because I used it to degrease my rifle prior to applying the duplicolor.
  9. Load the mags up, insert them - then check the "wiggle". It is reduced. The mags worked flawlessly for me - at first I thought maybe there was too much friction on the follower but the gun cycled smoothly.
  10. My experience with it is that it is very durable in as far as friction and adhesion is concerned, but doesn't stand-up to strong solvents very well. But to me, this is a non-issue as I don't use them on the outside of my rifle. Also, I do rub the rig down with CLP once it's done - it seems to like that
  11. You don't "hang" your parts? Does the rack make marks on the finish? I always hang mine from under the racks. And yes, its stinks
  12. Nice lookin AK there. It takes all standard AK-47 mags. A lot of poeple like the bulgarian poly mags as they fit a little more snuggly than the steel models. They even have them in od green and plum at http://www.k-var.com. Not cheap though. http://www.aimsurplus.com has hungarian mags for $10 (stear clear of the promags you see there IMHO).
  13. I'd think you'd be fine out to 150 with that load. A 30-30 with a 150 grain is good to 175 at least.
  14. If you like it as-is, just order a nice wood stock set from BattleRifleG3 and you can use the 20 rounders no problem. And you end-up with a classy looking rig too. Not a bad alternative to the pg conversion IMHO.
  15. nanuk - nice looking S308! You're gonna love the FBMG mags - need to let us know how they stand up to -30 degrees! We want a full function test with pics And while your at it, chrono the loads for us too :lol Seriously, I have a spare rommie folder and I may try it out on my S308... my experience with one on an ak is that it doesn't really feel any different than the small buttplate on a stock buttstock.
  16. Those that are critical of FBMG need to try and start and run a business. I am in the process of start up of mine right now (shameless plug now) http://www.armory-alchemy.com I had planned on having my product ready to ship mid-January. But due to my fabricator running into a supply issue, they have been delayed. The dies are sitting ready to go and the first run using a specific steel had cracking problems for the 90 degree radius bends, so we move to a slightly softer steel... its always some damned thing. Point is, have some patience for people that are willing to throw mone
  17. I called them about my order - I think they are waiting for some followers or something - expect to ship this week - if memory serves. I do agree that they need to brush up on the communication, but otherwise I'm very happy to have the 20 rounders available.
  18. Yeah, they always quote velocities for a 20 inch tube - SKS I guess...
  19. Well, glad you're set. Didn't mean you were totally screwed, just screwed out of this deal.
  20. They are swamped after being gone to the SHOT show - just call them. They will help you. Probably a burr in the mag or on the follower.
  21. --><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(G O B @ Jan 24 2007, 05:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->OSAK Read the (&^$%%^#^$#@ post dude. I did - and again. Not to be critical but you weren't very clear. So you are saying that you need to make the parts switch and then you can change the mags out without worry? I guess so. And it's O.S.O.K. not "OSAK".
  22. Yes, you must ask for "Ralph" and he will want to know the passphrase which is "for the love of Mike". Not really, you are screwed.
  23. --> QUOTE(G O B @ Jan 23 2007, 06:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You cannot "construct" an illegal gun with you'r parts on hand,as every time you insert the 20 rd mag the gun is automatically legal! Sit in you'r easy chair and swap mags as quick as you can and with some practice maybe you can "construct" as fast as Tromix! You most certainly do create an illegal firearm when you insert the 20 round mag into a stock saiga 308. This is because you turn your "sporting rifle" into an "assault rifle" by puting an "over 10 round" mag in, and it becomes subject to the 922r ruling and you
  24. I use one that's made of black nylon with a loop and buckle on the back end and a thin nylon strap with a buck on the front - that fits through the narrow sling swivel. Works good. You can kinda see it in this pic: I think I got it from interordnance? Don't remember. Was listed as an sks/ak sling and I think $12.
  25. I just read on another board that these battle packs are 120 rounds - that true? I thought they were 200? $6.7/20 isn't too bad, but not nearly as good as $4... Plus I'd get 480 rounds instead of 800.... ??? ETA - just looked at an old AIM catalog on hand - they are shown as 140 rounds. I'm sure this is the same - they were $28 at the time...
