  1. yes, it does. Standard AK cover. You could just get a low-rise side rail mount - and a screw-on aperture site - will be much much more stable and the zero won't wander like a cover mounted one will. The cover is just held in place by spring pressure... that would allow you to install a scope too if desired. Speaking of hunting - do you hunt afoot or from a stand? Moose? I bet some good Lapua hunting ammo would shoot even smaller groups for you.

    First Saiga

Well, looks good - ATI furniture? Not K-VAR. The brake looks good! Nice job snagging that one.
  3. yep I like both versions but I already had a FAL with longer barrel, so I wanted a carbine. Nice to have a choice!
  4. The receiver cover type rails move around and shif zero - at least that is what I've read over and over - so I assume it to be the case. Makes sense - the cover is just a loose fit held-on by spring tension. Very adequate for a cover, not good for a sight. I would stick with the rail based scope mount and aperture sight that mounts on it. I agree with the need to get the aperture/peep near your eye - they don't work as well too far from the eye.
  5. I think its B761 - looks just like it.
  6. The Czech Vz58 is an excellent rifle. If you can get one of them - go for it - and be sure to get plenty of mags for it while your at it.

The beauty of chrome... and probably a dry climate/storage?
  8. Here's one place - http://www.globaltrades.com/ak_sights.html They show out of stock on the one that I have from them - but you can call and see when it'll be available. No matter what you get, you are not going to have perfect calibration - you can adjust your 100 meter point of impact to get dead-on for 200 meters quite easily and only be an inch high or so - 300 meters will still be very close and 400 will be shooting a little high, but still fine for center of mass aiming. Check the balistics chart for the 7.62x39 and the 7.62x51 and you will see that they aren't that different.
  9. Yes, but the conservatives are making headway there!
  10. Nice! The wood looks terrific. Congratulations!
  11. Ah - that makes perfect sense now. Glad that you found a way to get there Ah - that makes perfect sense now. Glad that you found a way to get there

Well, I don't know for sure, but they were probably Armor Piercing and could not be imported or something. Its not all that uncommon.
  13. Yes, use two per axis pin - I didn't think of that - I'm going to give that a try cause there is a little movement- never had one "let go" but I like things snug... thanks! Edit - just did it - snug as a bug in a rug. Thanks again. Gotta go get some more e-clips...
  14. http://www.freedomoptics.com is good too.
  15. http://www.k-var.com for pistol grip/stock combo and pg bolt. http://www.redstararms.com for the red star vepr 308 fire control group. That'll get you started.
  16. Yes, I think they could - and I think that you could mill a slot in the top to allow the brake to come back even with the back of the fsb, pin in place and look bad-ass.... So as Indy says - where are these for 99cents? Hmm?
  17. I would think that you could find those for less - I'll take a look around at the usual spots and edit with results. It looks like it could work just fine - bore-out, slip on, pin - viola! Ha! Found one for $18 - and there's several other options too - how out a 74 style? http://www.sksman.com/
  18. I can tell you my experience with my two Saigas' - one a 22" recent model version and the second an older carbine. I used RSA's Veper 308 fcg in them both and have had no problem with the safeties. They are fully (and I mean fully) adjustable and the safeties on both are positive. I do have a little play on the trigger (very little) when the trigger is engaged (on my carbine) but it has no effect on the safety action. RSA has these on sale for $85 right now - I highly recommend them. Besides the safety thing, I was able to adjust the trigger on my carbine to a single stage mode

OK - posted a question about this on gunbroker and Devil Dog (resident ammo expert) informed me that the East German is indeed corrosively primed. So clean your rifle with hot water, water/windex with amonia or similar to disolve and clean away the salts. This includes the gas tube, piston and on back to where the gas reaches. Oh, and he says its not really all that rare and is military ammo that has had the bullets pulled and new ones seated. fwiiw

East German ammo... hmm I don't know if this is corrosive primed or not - Yugo for sure is. You may want to check the "collectivity" of this ammo - might sell it for a good price and then use the proceeds for some Wolf or Barnaul for shooting.
  21. I'm helping out a gunsnet member from Kalifornia who's doing this reverse conversion thing - sending him my buttstock and fcg for the price of the shipping. Figure why not? I'm not going to be using them and he needs em. Guess what? He's got a load of .308 stripper clips- I could use those, so he's going to send some to me. That's the way its suposed to work I have to say though, if for some reason I found myself stranded in Kaly, then I would store all of my AK's and other no-no rifles out of state and just shoot my SKS's - they are excellent rifles and the truth is that the AK
  22. I agree - for the stock Saiga stocks the basic el-cheapo slings at wally world are the best. For a converted rifle (k-var buttstock or similar and standard Saiga handguard) the ATI sling is perfect - has a 1" loop up front and wider sling on back - fits great. They are available from Red Star/Power Custom among other places.
  23. Yes, that is what i'm using now. So... why the question about the plate? Just curious or do you not like the e-clips? They work good for me...
  24. How much does the 3 cans of RIT + alky cost? My bottle of CRS was $10 shipped, from Brownells... I've done 3 rifles so far, and there is still 3/4 left in the bottle.. for the time and effort saved hard to beat. The 3 bottles of RIT and some pure denatured alcohol would be less than $10 and you could do 100 rifles with the amount of stain that you could make - and, you can customize the stain for the type of wood that you are using. IMHO
