  1. I'm using an XD(m) .45 with the match barrel that it comes with.
  2. With just raw gun knowledge I think it's hard to make a lot of money without a good game changing idea or getting into a very specialized field or starting a new manufacturing process. People at gun stores dont usually make "a lot" of money. I'm sure it's fun talking about guns all day though! The best jobs aren't always the ones that pay a lot of money in my opinion!
  3. I think I believed in zombies more before reading this thread Dogman, are you saying wearwolves and vampires? I just think people want to believe that there's a small chance that zombies could exist and are coming up with some off the wall ways that they 'could' be a problem (mad cow disease, rabies, nuclear terrorist attack, etc..). This isn't meant as a bash, so hopefully nobody takes it that way.. but there's a lot of talk on the forum about being prepared for bad situations and spending your extra money on ammo, medical kits, reloading equipment, food/canning/MRE's, ideal vehicles for
  4. We're actually comparing reloading with purchased bullets vs reloading with cast bullets. I think reloading w/ .45ACP is worth it for sure, even when comparing to cheapie russian ammo since I shoot a fair amount.
  5. I'm interested in casting lead as I think it will be fun and could possibly save me some money in the long run when reloading .45acp. Is this true? Is it worth it? Could someone link me to what equipment is needed for this? Also, what's the most economical way of getting lead? I've heard wheel weights are now mixed with Zinc and cannot be used for this purpose? Thoughts?
  6. The brass you quote above is $0.29 / round, and the steel cased would be $0.27/round + shipping (what does shipping cost on this much ammo?) . The stuff I buy straight from cabelas is $0.27 and no shipping, plus I dont have to buy 1000 rounds at a time. Seems like Cabelas is the better deal. ($13.69 per 50rnd box of Herter's steel case 230gr .45acp) Unless the steel cased stuff you're talking about is better. You get free brass and free lead for casting? Do you use wheel weights or something? I've heard of doing this but I've read recently that zinc is used in wheel weights now.
  7. lol sorry to be such a doubter I'm just trying to see if people do this because they actually believe it's possible that the dead will be walking the earth, or if it's all just fun to imagine/prepare for something like that. A friend of mine was on a different gun forum and compared the zombie preparedness to dungeons and dragons for weapons owners. I think it's much more realistic to SHTF prepare, but I guess you never know! Salt - the CDC put the zombie stuff up there for a joke/publicity.. it's not serious
  8. It's fun to think about and everything, but does anyone actually think that zombies are even a remote posibility? I'm starting to think people are serious about getting "zombie weapons" and preparing for a zombie apocalypse. Just wondering!
  9. It doesn't take a 12ga round to kill a zombie.. plus a S12 is too heavy to lug around long distance for a mere 20 rounds. I say a rifle with 100 round drum and carry a backpack with 1-2 more loaded drums.
  10. I dont think you can really go wrong w/ the XD(m) or the Glock. Both really good reliable guns. Rent both at a local range and decide that way. You'll never find the decisive answer you're looking for by asking people online since both guns are very good. I would guess that most people that give you a "glock is better" or "xdm is better" personally own that particular weapon.
  11. I started by build by looking at the picture thread and saving a bunch of photo's of the ones I liked best. I just happened to take little ideas from many people's S12 to come up w/ mine. I wouldn't be upset if someone liked mine and copied it though.. especially because I have many of the most popular parts! If you dont want to be copied or will be upset if someone has the exact same gun as your - make something custom or have something custom made for you.
  12. Cleaned the XDM 45 last night and it was pretty dirty but I would be cleaning it after shooting brass or steel anyways, so I guess in that aspect it doesn't make a difference to me. Also picked up (5) boxes of it last night at $13.99 while it's still on sale at Cabelas
  13. What about a minivan? Before you laugh and ban me lol think about it.. Minivans have tons of cargo space, room for passengers, good gas mileage, and front wheel drive. Another thing to consider is that women will immediately be attracted to someone driving a minivan. j/k.. but if offroading isn't happening it might not be a terrible idea...?
  14. That's what I was hoping would be the case! I'll load up on it tonight!
  15. Sounds good - thanks for the info! I read on Cabelas website there were people having ejection issues, but I didn't have a single one in 100 rounds (some were rapid fire even).
  16. I bought a few boxes of this: http://www.cabelas.com/handgun-ammunition-herters-45-acp-ammunition-1.shtml and fired 100 rounds through my Springfield XD(m) .45 last night. It's super cheap ammo (got for $13.69/box) and seemed to shoot fine for me. Zero failures and seemed as accurrate in my newbie hands as any other round. I ran into a guy at the range who had an XD(m) .40 who said "I heard that type of ammo is bad for our barrels". He was obviously newer to shooting, but I just want to make sure I'm not messing something up by buying this super cheapie steel cased ammo.. It's like half
  17. What would you say the ideal vehicle for SHTF is? I did several searches to see if this has been brought up before but found nothing exactly like this.. So what criteria would be needed for a SHTF car/truck/suv? I'm thinking: 1) 4WD or AWD 2) Large capacity gas tank and or high MPG 3) Has storage space for supplies & people 4) Reliable and somewhat easy to work on 5) Available Parts Any vehicles hit all of these points? Maybe a Jeep Cherokee sport (the older boxy type) with a roof rack?
  18. I know there's a reloading section but it gets very little traffic.. I'm considering getting into reloading for .45acp Is it worth it for this caliber? How much of an initial investment is there and what's the avg cost per bullet reloaded?
  19. Thanks for the information guys! I'll definitely check these out.
  20. I would like to find a pistol class for myself. I guess I could be called a beginner since I haven't had any formal training before, but I've fired many pistols. Where could I find a nearby training class to better my shooting? I'm in the Chicago area. Thanks for any advice!
  21. Frankly I dont want to lose any of my weapons! jk but I know what you're saying. I hadn't thought of the rose bushes - not a bad idea! I think i'll do this in the spring. We already live in a nice low-crime area in a good location (not a through street, well-lit, etc..) but I still like to be exta safe. Keep the ideas coming!
  22. I obsess about securing my home. I put in more secure doors, better more secure windows, better lighting and motion detecting security lights at all entrances, some shooting time and a handgun for my wife, some protection work with my dog, etc.. I'm starting to look into the security cameras that will record to a harddrive in the house and can be accessed with my mobile phone. Anyways some people would say all of this is overkill, but I have fun with it and it makes us feel safer. Anyways I'd like to hear if any of you have the same obsessions. Here is a picture of my 3 last lines of de
  23. I bought my Springfield XD(m) .45 that day. glad to hear it!
  24. This is a Springfield Armory XDm .45j - When you said Arsenal's finish is sub-par did you mean Springfield Armory's? I was under the impression that the finish on this gun is supposed to be very tough.
