  1. Yikes! I didn't know I what I was unleashing by starting this thread.

I didn't mean anything as a slight to FBMG, I was just trying to get some suggestions for my mags. Due to my schedule, it's usually it's difficult for me to call during business hours but since I'm EST and they are mountain, I shouldn't have a problem calling this week to get it sorted out. I appreciate all the replies, and sorry for any unpleasantness I may have started or implied!

  2. I'm having trouble with my FBMG mags.

I got in on the pre-order and recieved my mags before most people on the forum reported that they got them, but I didn't have a chance to try them out until much later. I went to the range a few weeks ago to try them out. This was also my first time shooting the Saiga 308 since I got it. The factory 8 rounder fed with no problem at all. The first FBMG mag fed all 20 with no problem. The second FBMG mag, I could only fire one or two rounds before it would fail to feed. When I would try to manually feed, sometimes it would work, and sometimes I could only pull the bolt back about half way before it would just stop. Anytime this happened, the round that wasn't feeding would have scratch marks on the top of it. It did the same thing with the third mag and again with the first mag (the one that had fed properly) when I tried it a second time.

I'm assuming that the problem is with the mags, but since I really don't know much about the AK design, I suppose it could be a problem with the rifle and I wouldn't really know it. But the fact that the 8 rounder feeds with no problem kind of leads me to believe it's the FBMG mags. Is it possible that I got one of the beta mags without all the kinks worked out? I sent two emails to FBMG in the last two weeks via the form on their website but have received no replies. This is pretty disappointing to me since everyone has reported such good customer service and the way they kept everyone updated about the progress of the mags made me feel good about them as a company. Anyone got any ideas??

  3. I have two rifles: a Saiga 308 and a CMP Garand. I took both to the range today. Both are amazingly fun to shoot. But I'd have to say if I was only going to have one rifle, it would be the Garand. There's just something about the history, the kick of that 30-06, and the fact that it finds its target every time (I'm sure others will argue that the Saiga 308 is just as accurate, but I haven't found that to be the case for me). Don't worry about the Garand needing any work. I got one of the last CMP service grade Garands from their most recent batch (Greek issue). All I did was clean it and lube it (use grease, not oil!) and it functions flawlessly and feels like a brand new rifle. Hopefully they'll have more available soon. I would recommend a service grade or a field grade. I previously had a rack grade Garand and the stock was so worn that the trigger group was sitting in there really loose. Still, even a problem like that on a Garand is a relatively easy fix.

I thought I was going to enjoy the Saiga more than the Garand since I have the hi-cap mags. And while blasting away 20 rounds at a time is great, there's just something about the Garand that the Saiga can't touch.

  4. Thanks for all the replies, guys. I think it makes sense to me now. I guess it's helpful to remember that the countable imported parts is what matters, not the number of US parts.

I've sent BRG3 a couple of emails about doing the stock but I haven't heard back from him yet. I know he's backed up, but I'm not sure my emails are even going through. Has anyone else talked to him lately?

  5. Sorry to beat a dead horse guys, but I just want to make sure I'm clear on this, especially with the political climate right now.

I just got my 16" .308 a couple of weeks ago and just yesterday got my hi-cap mags I ordered back in June (I wasn't in any hurry to get the rifle until the 20 rounders were closer to my doorstep!) I want to keep this in the sporter configuration, but still use the hi-caps. I know there's another thread on this, but I couldn't tell what the final word was, especially since I think the number us US parts in the new mags changed at some point.

I sent BRG3 an email about getting a quasi-p-grip stock and foreend. Does that count as one US part, or two? On top of that, what I'm seeing a lot of in the other threads is that the gas piston is an easy part to change out and relatively inexpensive. With those two changes, how many parts would I still need to change in order to be complaint with an *unconverted* rifle using the 20 rounders? Keep in mind, I'm not super-mechanical, but I don't mind tinkering around a bit until I figure something out... I just don't want to go cutting and grinding on things unless I absolutely have to.

By the way, just let me say that you guys are some of the most informative, friendly, and helpful dudes on any gun board I've read regularly. I probably would never have bought a Saiga if it hadn't been for all the stuff I was able to learn here. Rock on...

  6. I really appreciate you guys at fbmg keeping us updated on the status of the mags. That's really helpful and, unfortunately, uncommon. I don't mind waiting as long as I know it's for a good reason and the wheels are turning. You guys rock!

  7. Yeah, I visit the classic arms site regularly and have heard great things about them. I would have no problem buying a Saiga from them, but I don't see any in .308 on their site.

I won't be able to make it to the gun show this weekend, but I won't be ready to buy anything for a couple of months yet anyway. Maybe by the next time it rolls around...

I've been to the Dixie Gun and Knife Show they have at the fairgrounds every few months but I've always been disappointed with the selection. I think the show this weekend is put on by someone else... you guys know if it's any better?

  8. Hey guys, I'm new here. I'm thinking about getting a Saiga in .308. I've only seen them available online, but I'd like to buy one locally if possible. I've noticed a few of you are from North Carolina. Any of you guys know of any dealers with a good Saiga selection in the central NC area?
