  1. Pardon my NY laws illiteracy: can you hacksaw SGM mags into "liberals-approved" capacity? I thought it was one of the biggest selling points for them. If I could have Izhmash/Saiga mag in 30 rounds capacity, I'd stop right there. Period. My next pitstop would be Russian Bakelites in .223. O-ops, keep going... Final stop: Magpul's PMAG. "Minor" thing: it requires adapter... My understanding is that for a semi auto rifle like the Saiga, any mag with a round count higher than 10 is only legal if it's pre-ban.
  2. Forgive me for b**tching, but I can't stand living in upstate NY! I'd love to just grab a few SGM 30 rounders, but unless they're the old pre-band steel ones, that's a no go. I really just despise the amount of work required to legally use what I'd call "regular capacity" magazines, what with installing a BG, modifying mags and all that. *sigh* sorry about that, had to vent....that being said, if anybody has any of those old steel Surefires they'd like to part with....
  3. That seems like a really nice handguard! The only thing I know i want is a VFG, and probably a sling swivel, but I like having the option to mount something else later.
  4. Hey all! Looking to do my first conversion soon, and I've been thinking about getting a new hand guard. I've been looking at these three http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-1046/CSS-Saiga-Rifle-Forearm/Detail http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-1047/SAIGA-RIFLE-FOREARM-HANDGUARD/Detail http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-431/SAIGA-RIFLE-QUAD-SGM/Detail I'm looking for a good meeting of price, quality, and something that won't add too much weight. Really not looking to spend more than than $140 plus S&H. Any ideas?
  5. Hey all! I'm looking to do a conversion soon, and I'm finally sold on the idea of having a BG installed so I can use some regular capacity magazines. The only problem is that I live in upstate NY, which I understand means that the mags must be pre-ban. I can't begin to tell you how much I despise this, but I suppose that's a topic for another day.... Anyway, I was wondering if I could get some NY-specific info as far as what pre-ban mags are most easily obtainable, not too costly, and work reliably. I'm really not into grinding away at my rifle, but I'm more than willing to learn how to
  6. I've been tentatively considering this option as well, though I'd need to buy a press in addition to this, right? Also, do you reuse your brass once you've fired it? Or do you just use it once?
  7. Yeah I've used Prvi 5.56 before, and it seemed like pretty good ammo. Seemed to be a bit hotter and a little more accurate than the Wolf 55.gr JHP or Remington UMC 55gr. FMJ I had used. I've got a decent store of Silver Bear 62gr. JHP, and just wanted a nice, inexpensive FMJ load as well. My local shop carries the Prvi 5.56 stuff, but it's a lot pricier than online.
  8. Hey all! I'm looking to stock up on some accurate 55gr. FMJ stuff that won't break the bank! Anybody have some suggestions? I know that I can get Federal XM193 for less than $6 a box, does anybody have experience with this ammo? Again, my two chief concerns are accuracy and price, so whatever provides the best combination of those factors if what I want. Saiga .223, 16 inch barrel, 1:9. Thanks!
  9. Hmmm haven't tried these! Only problem is I live in NY.... Anybody have a line on some decent quality pre-ban Galil mags? It's my understanding that I can legally use magazines with a higher capacity than ten rounds if they are pre-ban. Is this correct? I definitely want to stay above board! Also, can anybody give a definite answer on whether or not I'd need a BG? I haven't done my conversion, but I plan to soon. Seems like installing the BG would be the hardest part for someone like me. That is, someone with no machining or Dremel experience....
  10. @ jbanzai- well said. I guess I'll just keep working it until i can figure out something more definitive. I've been flirting with the idea of doing a bullet guide, but I haven't done enough research to make a decision yet. Also don't really have the money right now.
  11. Definitely counting the rounds as they go in. I wonder if I should look into SGM's warranty
  12. @mancat- yeah it's not making any noticeable impression into the steel case, looks like it's just scratching the surface a bit. Really weird. I'll have to check to see if this is happening with the factory mag as well
  13. I'm a little new to all of this, so I'm going to ask what might be a stupid question: Is the bolt supposed to gouge the surface of the rounds as it cycles? Because it seems to do this on every round, not just the first. Also, this is only true of the SGM mag, the factory mag works flawlessly as far as I know. It's entirely possible that the cases get gouged with the factory mag too, but that I'm just not noticing. I can only get the SGM mag to lock in if it has fewer than 10 rounds in it.
  14. Hey everybody! Weird problem here. I took out my brand new SGM 10 round magazine today for some target practice and to see how it functioned. I'm having a strange issue with it: when the mag is fully loaded, it won't lock into the rifle! Looking at the action with the bolt open reveals that the bolt is actually contacting the top of the first round, and if I work the action, the bolt will actually scratch the surface of every round. It looks like the bolt is trying to push the first round down farther into the mag, but since it's already fully loaded, the round can't go anywhere, so the ma
  15. YeoldeTool- Totally agree about shopping with a locally owned merchant! Even though it's a bit more expensive, i try to buy from the local gun shop whenever i can. I was surprised to see that he even stocks Wolf 55gr HPs AND Prvi Psrtisan 55gr FMJ! He got me for a little more on the transfer- $60, but i attribute that more to his initial unwillingness to do the transfer on a rifle that he wasn't sure was legal in NYS. In general though, the local guy has been a real pleasure to deal with
