  1. Alright folks. First, thanks to all the guys who have already answered some of my questions and pointed me in the right directions for parts. I really appreciate it. So, here is what I have in mind. Starting with a Norinco Hunter reciever, I intend to build a Galil like rifle. This is not really going to be an exact clone but more of a Galil at first glance but with a few features that I'm wanting. I can fabricate the mating of the Galil folder to this reciever. I also have a functional gas tube. However, I still haven't decided on what to do with the barrel. I can make one that has all th
  2. I'll actually need everything. It was just a reciever and a barrel when it was given to me. Haven't decided if I'll press this barrel too and put another one in or use whats there. It looks like the armchair gunsmith who had it before was going to be slick and cut the barrel down, to the point of illegal I might add assuming they didn't pay uncle Sam and get his blessing. However, about halfway through his adventure I'd say the hacksaw was getting dull and he stopped. So, I have the option to press it, turn a new crown on it and thread it. At that point I can either tack the flash suppresor or
  3. I got 0.631" at the gas port. Bear in mind these are the $30 calipers I keep at my desk for quick stuff so they could be off a bit but generally they are not. If anybody has any extra parts of any type let me know because I can see already I'm going to be doing a lot of fabrication in this little project so the more the better. Thanks again to all of you for the help.
  4. Gotcha. Thanks very much. I figured it was Chinese. Now comes the hard part, say I wanted a "standard" ak butt on it. Would I be best off getting one and milling it to fit or is there already something out there on the market that would allow for this? I'll be fabricating the hand gaurd and I've got enough parts laying around to get the action put together. I'd also need a rear sight block and while I got a gas block, it's less than perfect. Do you have any thoughts on sources for what I need and what it is I'd really need? Thanks again though.
  5. Alright guys. It's been a while since I've been on here but as you can imagine, with deer season and then tax season the shop has been fairly busy. At any rate, I had a customer bring me two guns yesterday for free in return for me helping them out when they really needed it. I tried to pay them for them but they wern't having it. Good people. Anyway, one was a rough but functional CETME lacking only a bolt carrier and bolt (which I happened to have)! However, the other is an AK reciever that I can't identiofy. I am far from an AK expert so I thought I'd ask the fella who'd know. I am going to
  6. Getting the two sights on a reletive plane will be a pain unless the offcenter rails are built on the same spec. and the rails are both held at absolute level. Sighting it will also be a pain in as much as it will take some tweaking to get it there in very small increments. I'd use a boresight to rough it in a pinch. However, while your elevation adjustment and windage would be useless without either being very very very familiar with both the sight adjustment and the gun and probably still useless under combat conditions; if you sighted it in at 100 yards or maybe back it down to 75 you would
  7. I haven't had any issues with trigger slap using the Tapco stuff after the FCG had been tuned to make sure everything was good and slick and my clearances right. Never had much noticable trigger slap directly after install either. That said I assume you are wanting to have the rivet function the same on your new FCG as it did when the factory setup was in there? Just out of curiocity, where did you hear that about its preventing trigger slap. I hadn't heard this and I don't have any unconverted Saiga's in the shop at the moment but I don't recall the geometry of the factory FCG allowing there
  8. If it were a customer asking me to do it I wouldn't and would replace the block. I've seen it done on FSB but even then it was just as a temporary fix. Your going to have issues in as much as wear on the piston head where the block is not where it was originally I have seen this type of wear over several rounds with canted blocks. As the others mentioned the heats an issue. Most soft silver solders (ribs, etc.) melt around 400 degrees but the type you would want to use melts around 600. Depends on which you use but thats what your looking at. Your going to start seriously affecting the heat tr
  9. I should have clarified. Sorry bout that. I had actually had somebody request that I put one in their gun so I'm doing it on my own first. I definetly see your point though. Admitidly though, I couldn't tell you their rational with wanting a removable bullet guide as I have explained exactly what you just said. Its really just a bullet guid thats indexed at the bottom of the guide thus preventing movement. After I have done it I intend to mount the guide permenantly in my own rifle(s). At any rate do you know right off hand if you have to clip the Saiga mags bullet guide off in order to use a
  10. Put the MSA on a few days ago and just now got to really play with it. I fit the same adapter to both .223 Saiga's I have. I milled the first one but out of curiocity I fit the other with a Dremel and needle files. I didn't let myself cheat by using the mill at all on the second install. For what it is worth the second job looks nice and clean which proves the point that a decent job could be done with a Dremel. However, it also took twice as long. I used the carbide bits on the second go round as thats mainly what I had in the shop but I admit that I did use a grinding wheel at one point for
  11. I did measure the powder charge and they were the same though I don't have the charge written down in front of me at the moment but I will post it when I find where I wrote it. I have not checked to see what the specified charge should be though either so while I'm doubtful I had two rounds loaded hot in the same exact amount, given the degree of issues had with this ammo I also wouldn't be a bit surprised. I'd really like to get a hold of about 100 rounds from the fella and have the time toreview 50 of them and fire the remainder from the machine rest and see what happens.
  12. I got two rounds from the wife of the fellow who had the Ruger. First round was speced and found to be acceptable in all respects. Second round, not so much. I did'nt see anything right away but I was sitting at the table and just happened to look at the round saw the seat depth looked sort of odd compared to the other round I took apart. For what it is worth the case lengths were with 0.002" of each other but the overall length differed by 0.012" this could have been a rough handled round as I'm sure we have all seen this (especially anybody who has ever chambered the same 357 Sig round more
  13. I recieved my MSA adapter yesterday and took a look when I got to the house at a few of my AK varients and I don't see any reason that one couldn't mate the MSA adapter to just about any 5.56 AK. I do not have a WASR-3 so I wouldn't take it all for gospel but with the right tweaking I would think it would work. Principles would be the same. I put my adapter in this morning. I put it on my own rifle so I could gauge what kind of time I had in it but even taking my time and everything along with it being early and me trying to get started with my day it only took about 2 hours and change. I did
  14. You could get get a box of PMC for $5.12 on Friday but nothing left now. On the up side, prices will remain in effect following this order evidently but no pre-set price on the next.
  15. My business partner that handles sales though his retail gun shop spoke with one of our ammo distributors the other day and he told him that PMC .223 will be going up some in the near future. I dunno when or how much. It's not a case of the guy pushing a sale as he knows that the ammo will be bought either way because a lot of folks around here like the PMC a lot. We know the rep. personally and he's not a B.S.'er. However, the million dollar question will be how much will it matter since the ammo is already reasonably priced. Also, he noticed that the last 10,000 rounds of Tulammo .223 wa
