  1. I'm looking for some opinions and input. I am currently making arrangements with a professional to have my 20" barrel shortened to 16". I thought I was convinced that I wanted the shorter barrel, but I'm really struggling with the decision. I dont like the idea of a shorter sight radius, potentially louder report, and loss of velocity. On the other hand, I've read 7.62x39 only takes marginal advantage of a longer barrel because of the amount of powder to burn. Other pros are less barrel whip, handier, slightly less weight, and would now be threaded for brake or hider. Also, does anyone f
  2. This was all theoretical on my part. I was under the impression that this barrel should be thicker for the extra length. It seems the Ruger mini rifles have a similar barrel dia to length ratio, and a lot of those owners have installed clamps and struts on the barrel to correct/avoid excessive "whip" and stringing. I made the assumption that I would be facing similar problems, but it sounds like I'm trying to fix a non existent problem.
  3. Thats a good question. I came up with this because some folks on another forum were using clamps similar to this to attach hollow or solid "struts" to the barrels on their mini 14s and reporting great results with regards to group size and stringing
  4. Hi everyone, I posed this question on an older thread, so I decided to start a fresh one. I have a 7.62x39 with the 20" barrel. I've clamped two of these on the barrel: http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Universal-Single-Rail-Barrel-Picatinny/dp/B001WJ0CFQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1313695214&sr=1-1 one up against the gas block, and the other butted up to the first one. I want to get some thoughts/constructive criticism on this. My theory is that they will A: stiffen the barrel, and B: act as heat sinks for the barrel. Is there any glaringly obvious problem with
  5. Hi, newby here. Mine is a 20" 7.62x39 that I converted around 2004. I became aware that Ruger Mini owners were building "struts" to stiffen their long thin barrels. I got the idea to attach a couple of UTG aluminum barrel clamps http://www.amazon.co...13523185&sr=8-5 to the barrel to act as stiffeners/heat sinks. One is up against the gas block and one butted up against the first, covering the first 4.8" of barrel from the gas block. I havnt really done any sort of comparison before and after, I really need to. I would think the heat sink benefits alone would be worth it, they weigh
